      Who Gets to Define "Christian"?
By Orson Scott Card Each time a group of Christians comes up with an unfamiliar way of understanding the scriptures and our relationship with God, there are other Christians who are quick to insist that anyone who believes like that can’t really be Christian. Much blood has been shed over these doctrinal differences; wars have been fought, boundaries have been changed, and people have gone into exile. Whether it was the often bloody struggle between Arians and Athanasians, between Lutherans and Catholics, between the Church of England and the Puritans, people have been willing, it seems, to die, to kill, and to deprive others of their rights as citizens over differences of Christian belief. In America, though, we long ago decided — though not easily — to put such things behind us. Many states refused to ratify the Constitution until it included provisions forbidding one religion to be given preference over others. Besides the first amendment, there is this statement in Article 6: “No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

Ender's Game
(reviewed by Judi Clark SEP 06, 1999) One hundred years earlier the Bugger's, a formidable alien race, attacked Earth. Although Mazer Rackham and the International Force were able to defeat the Buggers during a second attack, it's been several generations and it is assumed that word will have gotten back to the Bugger's that they lost. The I.F. expects a counterattack in the upcoming years. Thus they have been seeking out the one child that will have the right qualities (intelligence and empathy) and whom they can train to beat the buggers and end this confrontation for all times. Andrew "Ender" Wiggin is believed to be the boy. His brother and sister tested close to the right mix of brains and personality but were each nixed for different reasons. Close enough however, that in a time of total population control, the Wiggins are allowed to breed a third child. After three years of monitoring, and at the age of six, Ender is removed from his family to undergo training at the special off world Battle School which teaches offensive strategy to children. These are not ordinary children though, they are all the best and the brightest, selectively chosen as the last hope to save humankind and earth. While the kids are schooled in advanced history, math and physics, the main training is through team warfare games. The battles are staged weekly in zero-gravity rooms in which the kids wear flash uniforms that go stiff when they are hit. The fun part of

The Only Issue This Election Day
By Orson Scott Card
There is only one issue in this election that will matter five or ten years from now, and that's the War on Terror. And the success of the War on Terror now teeters on the fulcrum of this election. If control of the House passes into Democratic hands, there are enough withdraw-on-a-timetable Democrats in positions of prominence that it will not only seem to be a victory for our enemies, it will

I was surprised to see, in the commercial-art classroom, a member of our high priests group. But in Mormon wards, we can forget all that. People "are" their callings, but because those change rather often, our real knowledge about them consists of how well and faithfully they do their callings, what they say and do in meetings, how often you run into them setting up or cleaning up after meetings. The Mormon ward gives us a way to know each other.

Snider © 2005 If he lives to be 100, Orson Scott Card will be remembered first and foremost for Ender's Game , the futuristic story about a little boy whose innate genius for military strategy eventually leads to the extermination of the alien insectoids known only as "buggers." Aside from having one of the most astonishing surprise endings in science fiction, Ender's Game is a rare book indeed, with an appeal that spans across demographics. Its fans include philosophically inclined book-clubbers, lovers of juvenile fiction, and fans of action-packed military sci-fi. What began as a 1977 short story in the pages of Analog was later expanded into a Hugo- and Nebula-winning novel, becoming the first volume of an eventual tetralogy:

Few science-fiction books leave you, once you have finished reading them, with more than a single idea to ponder. Ender's Game leaves you with quite a few. Add that to Orson Scott Card's remarkably flowing prose and you have a winning combination.
Personally, I was really impressed by the idea of public-opinion takeover by two children (Peter and Valentine) using “the nets” to disguise their real identity. But of the many ideas and concepts presented throughout the book, the most enjoyable (and certainly the most detailed one) is the Battle School. Ender's struggles against greater and greater odds are told in a thrilling way, raising a lot of sympathy in the reader. But if it was all about battle tactics in 3D, it would have been far less interesting. The mingling of other aspects of the military life, like command issues, make it really gripping. Let alone the idea of “breeding” military geniuses, monitoring them from birth, and having them go into battle as early as age six.
But while the military trainees' young age is what makes a lot of a difference, it also puts

      • The first four books of this series are a much more continuous sequence compared to the Ender series. This is a series set in the distant future in which Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by mankind, but a small foresighted part of society has apparently designed an artificial intelligence mechanism to disperse Earth's population to a variety of planets, each watched by an "oversoul" that monitors the civilization to ensure it never again acquires the ability to destroy itself. On one of these worlds, Harmony, in the city of Basilica, the series begins as the oversoul of the world, after millions of years, begins to break down to such an extent that people are starting to overcome its desires, thus making war on a large scale and taking the first steps along the path to weapons of mass destruction. The series follows a group of humans selected by the oversoul to help it overcome its problems, perhaps by establishing communications with the master computer, the "Keeper of Earth". As usual, Card has come up with a variety of very interesting ethical dilemmas, rather than your simple, everyday good vs evil story. While there is a focus on a central "good" character, Nafai, who brings back strong memories of Ender Wiggin, there are several good subplots and lots of space given to the development of other characters. The books are fairly fast-paced, and I found myself flying through the middle books of the series (whereas I've found with other long series, I tend to bog down near the middle).

The American Empire has grown too fast, and the fault lines at home are stressed to the breaking point. The war of words between Right and Left has collapsed into a shooting war. The battle rages between the high-technology weapons on one side, and militia foot-soldiers on the other, devastating the cities, and overrunning the countryside. But the vast majority, who only want the killing to stop and the nation to return to more peaceful days, have technology, weapons and strategic geniuses of their own. When the American dream shatters into violence, who can hold the people and the government together? And which side will you be on?

(Titles like ¢â‚¬Å“Advent Rising¢â‚¬Â, and smaller parts in ¢â‚¬Å“The Secret of Monkey Island¢â‚¬Â among others.) How did you get involved in writing for video games? Orson Scott Card: With Advent Rising, the creators of that game, then at GlyphX (now at Chair Entertainment) invited me to take part early on. The collaboration did not work as we had hoped - I ended up coming in too late to be part of the story development - but I wrote much of the dialogue and established the character relationships. It was a productive partnership, because I later wrote my novel Empire based on the situations created for their game of the same name (not yet finished).
