Seamus Heaney Wins Truman Capote Award For Literary Criticism "Finders Keepers: Selected Prose 1971-2001" by Irish Nobel Laureate poet Seamus Heaney, is the winner of the 2003 Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism in Memory of Newton Arvin. The $50,000 Capote Award, the largest annual cash prize for literary criticism in the English language, is administered for the Truman Capote Estate by the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. Books of general literary criticism in English, published during the last four years, are eligible for nomination. After reading all the nominated books, each critic ranked the nominees, and the winner was determined by a tally of the votes. The panelists' choices were reviewed and confirmed by Frank Conroy, director of the UI Writers' Workshop. Writing for The New Yorker, past Capote Award winner Helen Vendler praised "Finders Keepers" for "A brimming metaphoric energy... a buoyant vivacity of description... reflective humor... and an imaginative penetration... unequalled in contemporary critical prose." Robert Lowell dubbed Heaney "the most important Irish poet since Yeats."

Truman Capote on Criticism
Interviewer: Do you think criticism helps any?
Truman Capote: Before publication, and if provided by persons whose judgment you trust, yes, of course criticism helps. But after something is published, all I want to read or hear is praise. Anything less is a bore, and I’ll give you fifty dollars if you produced a writer who can honestly say he was ever helped by the prissy carpings and condescensions of reviewers. I don’t mean to say that none of the professional critics are worth paying attention — but few of the good ones review on a regular basis. Most of all, I believe in hardening yourself against opinion. I’ve had, and continue to receive, my full share of abuse, some of it extremely personal, but it doesn’t faze me any more. I can read the most outrageous libel about myself and never skip a pulse-beat. And in this connection there is one piece of advice I strongly urge: Never demean yourself by talking back to a critic, never. Write those letters to the editor in your head, but don’t put them on paper.
From a Paris Review Interview, 1957

On the dance floor with Marilyn Monroe. By his account Truman Capote was an accomplished dancer from his earliest days. Photo: Supplied Two soon-to-be released films on Truman Capote revolve around his journalistic masterwork In Cold Blood , writes David Carr. It would please Truman Capote no end that there will be not one, but two, movies memorialising his life this year and next. Not only do Capote and Have You Heard? pivot around his favourite topic - Truman Capote - but the films' convergence, with the promise of conflict, adds a promise of deliciousness that he would have happily put on a serviette for. Fame and all of its discontents were persistent obsessions for Capote, which might explain why he seemed willing to do almost anything to obtain them. While reporting In Cold Blood , the masterwork that serves as the frame for both films, Capote told some lies to tell a truth. As such, he became an object lesson in how journalistic truth is told and obtained. It is easy to forget in the current context of journalists willing to go to jail to protect sources that much of the profession involves less noble imperatives.

Who is Truman Capote?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Truman Capote is a famous American writer, best known for his novel, Breakfast at Tiffany's , and his true crime book, In Cold Blood , which many believe heralded the creative nonfiction movement, whose modern followers include Susan Orlean and Jon Krakauer. Truman Capote was born in 1924, and died in 1984, leaving behind an impressive and prolific body of work, and an infamous reputation as a flamboyantly gay, witty New York socialite. As a child, Truman Capote lived with his aunt in Alabama. His best friend was Harper Lee , author of the classic work, How to Kill a Mockingbird . Some speculate that the book was actually ghostwritten by Capote, but the rumors have never been substantiated. During his teenage years, Capote moved to New York to live with his mother and her husband. Soon after graduating from high school, he got a job at the prestigious magazine, The New Yorker Truman Capote began writing short stories, which were published in numerous literary journals. His first novel, Summer Crossing was stolen by his housesitter before he could publish it. Many years later, it resurfaced and was published by Random House in 2005.
