Truman Capote A Biography by Denise Galarraga
Finney County Public Library Garden City, Kansas Truman Capote, born Truman Streckfus Persons, in New Orleans on September 30, 1924, was 41 years old at the time that “In Cold Blood” was published. Although by this time he was hobnobbing with the rich and famous and living between New York and Europe, he was born in poor in New Orleans to a 16-year-old girl who had taken a chance on life’s lottery by marrying a good looking and fast talking (but usually unemployed) salesman. Their marriage was rocky and ended after four years. Lillie Mae, who acknowledged that motherhood did not really suit her, often left little Truman alone while she sought out excitement and male companionship. Eventually, she dumped him in the care of elderly aunts living in Monroeville , Alabama, a town of a few thousand people. Here he lived for much of his childhood until Lillie Mae (now calling herself Nina) married again, this time with better result, to a well-to-do businessman named Joe Capote. She reclaimed Truman, and the family moved to New York.

What you're in for is gossip of the most salacious and informed variety, with Plimpton acting as genial segue artist: "As soon as he landed in a town Paris, say it didn't seem to take him more than a minute to be at the center of things." And that is the initial thrill of this book, the center stage vantage it offers on the determined self-formation of an artist. It charts Capote's early childhood in Monroeville, Ala. then, in New York, his brief moments as an office boy at the New Yorker (he was fired) and his acceptance at the Yaddo Writers Colony. Then comes the glitter "Other Voices, Other Rooms," "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "In Cold Blood" followed by the climax, Capote's rather over-pondered Black and White Ball, which receives more space here than any one of his books. This is quickly followed by ruin in the guise of alcoholism and his

Claiming he had written a novel by the age of nine, Truman Capote knew he would be a writer at a young age. Writing across genres, from the short story, to the novel, to the nonfiction novel (which he coined), Capote captivated not only the literary and theatrical, but the mainstream masses like no other artist. At the age of four, just before entering school, Truman had learned how to read. By eight years old, he began to write stories and by eleven, he claimed he wrote six to nine hours everyday. Critics even believe it to be true because at age ten he won the prestigious Mobile Press Register short story award.

‘Infamous’ will never be as famous as ‘Capote’
October 13, 2006 By Ryan Lampe You’ve got to feel a little sorry for writer-director Douglas Enlarge Joseph Bergen McGrath. Though McGrath has fashioned a funny and moving account of author Truman Capote’s experiences writing “In Cold Blood,” his film is largely obsolete. Last year’s “Capote” depicted the same events and featured an Oscar-winning performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman that this film’s lead (Toby Jones) had no hope of eclipsing. How “Infamous” remained in production is a great mystery. Written accounts suggest that the script was considered too good to pass up even though the producers knew about the rival Capote movie. This is quite possible. McGrath’s screenplay is very witty while being compassionate to both its characters and its sometimes dark material The film’s excellent supporting cast, including Sandra Bullock and Daniel Craig, likely helped also. Like “Capote,” “Infamous” begins with the brutal slaying of a prominent Kansas family. Intrigued by the murders, Capote (Jones) travels to the small town of Holcomb, with author Harper Lee (Bullock) in-tow, hoping to write a “New Yorker” article documenting the impact on the local community. However, when the murderers are captured, the author quickly becomes obsessed with showing their side of the story.

        • UK Tuesday, 25 April 2006 One morning in June 1966, while Truman was still riding the wave of adulation, he realised that he had money in his pockets and time on his hands. This was an unusual state of affairs for a writer who was generally overworked and overextended. He wanted a reward for his hard work, especially the long, difficult years he had devoted to In Cold Blood. To celebrate his good fortune, he decided to host a party, his "great, big, all-time spectacular present" to himself. Truman decided exactly what he wanted to do. He decided to throw a Black and White Ball. And he selected a gimmick that was sure to galvanise and amuse his guests and magnetise the media. He would invite the most famous people in the world - his friends - and impertinently ask them to hide their fabulous and photographed faces behind masks.
