August 28, 1984 Truman Capote Is Dead at 59; Novelist of Style and Clarity By ALBIN KREBS ruman Capote, one of the postwar era's leading American writers, whose prose shimmered with clarity and quality, died yesterday in Los Angeles at the age of 59. Mr. Capote died at the home of Joanna Carson, former wife of the entertainer Johnny Carson, in the Bel-Air section, according to Comdr. William Booth of the Los Angeles Police Department. ''There is no indication of foul play,'' he said, adding that the county coroner's office would investigate the cause of death. The novelist, short story writer and literary celebrity pioneered a genre he called ''the nonfiction novel,'' exemplified by his immensely popular ''In Cold Blood.'' He died apparently without having completed his long- promised ''masterwork,'' an extensive novel called ''Answered Prayers.'' Mr. Capote's first story was published while he was still in his teens, but his work totaled only 13 volumes, most of them slim collections, and in the view of many of his critics, notably his old friend John Malcolm Brinnin, he failed to join the ranks of the truly great American writers because he squandered his time, talent and health on the pursuit of celebrity, riches and pleasure. ''I had to be successful, and I had to be successful early,'' Mr. Capote said in 1978. ''The thing about people like me is that we always knew what we were going to do. Many people spend half their lives not knowing. But I was a very special person, and I had to have a very special life. I was not meant to work in an office or something, though I would have been successful at whatever I did. But I always knew that I wanted to be a writer and that I wanted to be rich and famous.'' Success, both as a writer and as a celebrity, came early, when he was 23 years old and published his first novel, ''Other Voices, Other Rooms.'' It was a critical and financial success, and so were most of the volumes of short stories, reportage and novellas that followed, including ''Breakfast at Tiffany's,'' ''The Muses Are Heard,'' ''The Grass Harp,'' ''Local Color,'' ''The Dogs Bark'' and ''Music for Chameleons.''

Don't you think Truman sat there in Monroeville Alabama, when he was about ten, deeply rejected and out of it, strange little outcast, even in his own house, and said that someday he would hire the most beautiful ballroom in New York City and he would have the most elegant and famous people in the world there?
    LEO LERMAN
The ball was one of his major works. As much a major work as some of his short stories. He sat there planning it all summer long. I came back from somewhere to find him surrounded by these notebooks. I wondered what work is he writing? It turned out to be this ball. One of the things he adored saying was "Well, maybe you'll be invited and maybe you won't." He'd say things like "Well, are we going to have so-and-so?" Then he'd make little notes. He had the most marvelous time doing it. It was his reward for all those years he kept for himself. It was ostensibly for Kay Graham. It was for Truman.
    DOMINICK DUNNE
Two years before Truman's ball, on my tenth wedding anniversary, my wife, Lenny, and I gave a black-and-white ball where the ladies were asked to dress in black and white. We had a policy that no one could bring houseguests or anything because there was just limited space. At the last minute Truman called and said, "Yes, yes, I'm coming, I'm going to be there, but I'm bringing three guests." Well, we didn't have the nerve to say to him, "Well, you can't bring them." They turned out to be Alvin Dewey, the FBI agent, his wife, and a third person involved in the

Harper Lee: A Brief Biography "Nelle" Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, the youngest of four children of Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee. She grew up in Monroeville, a small town in southwest Alabama. Her father was a lawyer who also served in the state legislature from 1926 -1938. As a child, Lee was a tomboy and a precocious reader. After finishing public school in Monroeville, she attended Huntington College, a private school for women in Montgomery, for a year and then transferred to the University of Alabama to study law but withdrew six months before graduation. She moved to New York in 1949 and worked as a reservations clerk for Eastern Air Lines and British Overseas Airways. While in New York, she wrote several essays and short stories but none were published. Her agent encouraged her to develop one short story into a novel. In order to complete it, Lee quit working and was supported by friends who believed in her work. In 1957, she submitted the manuscript to J. B. Lippincott Company. Although editors found the work too episodic, they saw promise in the book and encouraged Lee to rewrite it. In 1960, with the help of Lippincott editor Tay Hohoff, To Kill a Mockingbird was published.

Capote, Truman (1924-1984) Truman Capote's fiction and autobiographical works helped establish what might be called the quintessential homosexual writing style of the 1950s and 1960s. Capote was born Truman Steckfus Persons on September 30, 1924, in New Orleans. As his biographer, Gerald Clarke, reports, Capote's parents were mismatched, and Capote began a childhood in Monroeville, Alabama, with a batch of eccentric relatives he would later immortalize in his writing. Sponsor Message.
His story "Miriam," published in Mademoiselle in 1945, launched Capote, whose reputation was further enhanced by the publication of "A Tree of Night" in Harper's Bazaar that same year. Capote's career after that was one of triumph and sorrow, with many feeling that he peaked with In Cold Blood, published as a book in 1966 after publication in The New Yorker . Although Capote did produce some good writing in the following years, alcoholism and other problems ruined both his art and life, and he died on August 25, 1984, just before turning sixty.

K-State Keepsakes: The Truman Capote Connection
Seventh in the Keepsakes Series In Cold Blood by Truman Capote was published in hardback by Random House in 1966 after it was serialized in The New Yorker the previous year. The best seller, focusing on the murder of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas , continues to inspire books and movies. Two of the more successful by-products are Capote: A Biography (1988 with paperback editions in 2001 and 2005) by George Clark, and the film, Capote (2005), that was nominated for five academy awards, including best actor in a leading role won by Philip Seymour Hoffman Capote arrived in Manhattan on November 19, 1959 only four days after the murder! He was accompanied by his long time friend, Harper Lee (“Nelle”), the author of To Kill a Mockingbird (slated for publication the next year) to help with the endeavor. President McCain arranged for a luncheon in the K-State Union that included mostly people from the School of Agriculture who had known Herbert Clutter. Earle Davis, chair of the English Department, also attended. Cerf recounted how McCain told him that when he met Capote he was wearing a pink velvet coat. After Capote announced, “I bet I’m the first man who has ever come to Manhattan, Kansas wearing a Dior jacket,” McCain replied, “I’ll go you one better, Mr. Capote. You’re probably the first man or woman who ever came to Manhattan wearing a Dior jacket.”

William H. Gass wins 2007 Truman Capote Award for 'A Temple of Texts' The Capote Award, the largest annual cash prize for literary criticism in the English language, is administered for the Truman Capote Estate by the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa. William H. Gass "Some years ago I served as a nominator for this award so I know how scrupulous the process is and how serious the standards are," Gass said. "That certainly makes it even more significant for me. It is also given by the Truman Capote Literary Trust as a memorial to Newton Arvin, a scholar and critic whose own practice brought honor to the field. If you look at the list of previous winners, you will see every other reason why I am so pleased." Gass will formally receive the award and present a lecture in a ceremony at the University of Iowa in the fall. Gass has been a prominent figure in American letters for decades, as not only a critic but also a novelist, short story writer, essayist and founder of the International Writers Center at Washington University. He has three times won the National Book Critics Circle Award for collections of essays.
