  • Thomas Campion 1567-1620
English poet, playwright, composer, and critic.
    INTRODUCTION
Campion is best known for his work as a poet and as a composer of songs for voice and lute. He is also recognized for his poetry in Latin and for his work in the masque form of poetic drama, which is considered of some importance in the evolution of the genre. In addition to his creative works, Campion wrote a significant study on poetic theory, Observations in the Art of English Poesie (1602). In this controversial work, he argued that verse written in English should emulate classical meters. The influence of classical literatures, primarily Latin, are found throughout the work of Campion, whose reputation as a writer and composer has steadily improved over time.

The English poet, composer and doctor Thomas Campion established his reputation as a poet in the 1590s and published his first songs in 1601. He wrote and composed masques for royal entertainment, particularly after the succession of King James of Scotland to the throne of England as James I, and was unusual in that he wrote both words and music for his many songs with lute accompaniment. Vocal Music Campion's musical legacy consists entirely of some 119 lute-songs. Many of these were published in a series of four Bookes of Ayres. They include the vivid "Fire, fire, fire fire loe here I burne, Never weather-beaten saile" and "Woo her, and win her, he that can", among a rich collection.

      CAMPION, Thomas.
Selected Songs of Thomas Campion. Selected and Prefaced by W. H. Auden. Introduction by John Hollander.
Boston David Godine 1973 One of 250 numbered copies (this copy unnumbered) of the deluxe edition, set in Bembo type, designed and printed under the supervision of Martino Mardersteig at the Stamperia Valdonega in Verona. The title-page was designed by Leo Wyatt. At the rear are 21 facsimile pages from Campion's "Book of Ayres" (1601). Tall 8vo, quarter rust-colored cloth and marbled boards, in the original slipcase. 162 pp. A few insignificant marks to the spine, otherwise a fine copy. Campion (1567-1620) was, as Auden points out in his Preface, the only man in English cultural history who was both a poet and composer, and appropriately enough, Godine supplies not only the text but also the musical notation to most of these songs. An attractive, early work from Godine.
