Thomas Campion
Thomas Campion was educated at Cambridge from 1581-1584 but there is no record of his having obtained a degree. He went on to study law at Gray's Inn and later became a doctor after studying medicine in France. In 1595 he published Poemata , a volume of Latin poems. His treatise Observations in the Art of English Poetry (1602) argued against the use of rhyme in English verse. A musician as well as a poet, Campion published four books of lute songs between 1601 and 1617. These Books of Ayres contain English versions of Latin poems and ballads which he set to music himself. Among the most famous of these are Cherry-Ripe Devotion , and Break Now My Heart and Die . He also wrote masques for presentation at court and a volume of songs on the death of Prince Henry. CAMPION, THOMAS BIOGRAPHY
The English poet, composer and doctor Thomas Campion established his reputation as a poet in the 1590s and published his first songs in 1601. He wrote and composed masques for royal entertainment, particularly after the succession of King James of Scotland to the throne of England as James I, and was unusual in that he wrote both words and music for his many songs with lute accompaniment. Vocal Music Campion's musical legacy consists entirely of some 119 lute-songs. Many of these were published in a series of four Bookes of Ayres. They include the vivid "Fire, fire, fire fire loe here I burne, Never weather-beaten saile" and "Woo her, and win her, he that can", among a rich collection.

Thomas Campion (Campian)
English poet and composer. Campion was son of the attorney and diplomatic courier John Campion: he was raised in affluence and entered Cambridge in 1581. Leaving three years later, probably without a degree, he joined Gray's Inn, a gentleman's society that engaged in amateur and semi-professional music-making. There he composed and performed masques and other music for noble and royal audiences, including Queen Elizabeth. Apart from his poetry, he published five volumes of ayres, mainly to his own texts, beginning in 1601 with a volume compiled jointly with his close associate Philip Rosseter ; he also wrote masques and occasional music, little of which survives. An important composer, he was the only English composer to experiment with and the first to imitate the Florentine monodists, criticizing intricate counterpoint and naive word painting. He was best at epigrammatic, dance-like pieces, in which sense he was the opposite of Dowland

When Thou Must Home
What if a Day? Follow thy faire Sunne ... Beauty Is But A Painted Hell
When Thou Must Home Midi Music
When Thou must home to shades of under ground,
And there ariv'd, a newe admired guest,
The beauteous spirits do ingirt thee round,
White Iope, blith Helen, and the rest,
To heare the stories of thy finisht love,
From that smoothe toong whose musicke hell can move: Then wilt thou speake of banqueting delights,
Of masks and revels which sweete youth did make,
Of Turnies and great challenges of knights,
And all these triumphes for thy beauties sake: When thou hast told these honours done to thee, Then tell, O tell how thou didst murther me. -Thomas Campion To return to the top of this page click here
What If a Day Midi Music
What if a day, or a month, or a yeare, Crown thy delights with a thousand sweet contentlings? Cannot a chance of a night or an howre Crosse thy desires with as many sad tormentings? Fortune, honor, beauty, youth are but blossoms dying; Wanton pleasure, doating love
