Part of the overall San Francisco Port of Embarcation, Camp John T. Knight, was the name of the administrative and cantonment area of what became the Oakland Army Base. This name was officialy used from 1942 until it was fully incorporated into the Oakland Army Base in 1946. It was named for Brigadier General John Thornton Knight, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal during World War I for his outstanding service in the Quartermaster Corps.
John Thornton Knight
John Thornton Knight, was a brilliant officer in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. An account of his record is given in the Hampden-Sydney magazine and is as follows

"John Thornton Knight, 1880, Brigadier General, U. S. A., retired, died at his home in San Francisco, California, after a brief illness of pneumonia, January 15, 1930. He was the son of the late Captain John H. Knight of Poplar Hill, Prince Edward County, Virginia, and was born April 18, 1861.
"He received his preparatory training at Prince Edward Academy, Worsham, Virginia, under Professor James R. Thornton and entered Hampden-Sydney College in 1877, a member of the class of 1880. In 1879 he entered the U. S. Military Academy at West Point and in due time graduated (1884) and received a commission as second lieutenant of cavalry in the U. S. Army.

There is a caution light at Camp Barnhardt Road on Hwy. 740 and a sign directing you to the camp entrance. Some of the facilities at Camp Barnhardt include swimming pool/shower facilities, natural and man-made lakes for swimming, canoeing, sailing, snorkeling, rowing, kayaking, motor-boating, water skiing and great fishing. There is a well-equipped handicraft shelter, an ecology building, rappelling/climbing tower, C.O.P.E Course, obstacle course, rifle, shotgun, and archery ranges. Our outstanding facilities provide opportunities for your Scouts to take advantage of the excellent merit badge and skills programs. Although our facilities and natural surroundings are certainly an asset, our greatest asset is our commitment to quality program instruction. Our staff the past several years has had an experienced adult staff member in every program area. In addition to a staff that is selected for their knowledge, skills and dedication to Scouting principles we close our camp registration for any week once we have 275 scout campers. We are able to offer quality instruction in small merit badge classes that other camps cannot duplicate. We typically have the same number of staff members that other camps camping 350-400 a week have on staff.

Volume 18, No. 5 Buffalo County Historical Society September - October, 1995 CAMP JOHN R. BROOKE by Alice Shaneyfelt Howell In today's world (1995) mention is often made of "rewritten history", ''fractured history", or "revisionist history''. This story is one of "blended history". Two outstanding events of local history have seemingly become blended into one. We will attempt to separate the two events, each outstanding on its own merits, and give you the story of Camp John R. Brooke and the story of Camp Henry A. Morrow, both held on the outskirts of Kearney in September of 1888. All of the participants are now gone so we have had to rely on military historians, newspaper, magazine and journal items to find the facts. The United States Army Department of the Platte in 1888 included all of the states of Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah. During the summer many camps of instruction were established, manned by troops from selected forts within the Department. The largest of these summer camps in 1888 was located in southwest Kearney and was named in honor of John R. Brooke, Commanding General of the Department of the Platte. It was established September 1 and maintained throughout the month of September. Reporters and photographers from the east coast were sent to cover the activities of this large camp. The Omaha Bee had almost daily coverage. The

Reminiscing the Elegance of Camp John Hay
Baguio City, Philippines – Blooming with flowers, cool fresh air and the soothing effect of smell of pine trees complemented with the well maintained lawns of a picturesque golf course, one would be awed to the beauty of Camp John Hay. But that was then, when the Americans still occupies the sprawling base camp that served as their rest and recreation. The complete facilities and services are not only exclusive to the GIs but likewise are open to the public to the appreciation of all the visitors, rich and poor. The American way of life could be seen inside the camp. Bulky and luxurious American cars are rolling the paved road of the base camp. Some of the vehicles were being used in transporting visitors from the guarded gates going to the inside of the camp – for free. The usual PX goods were the big attraction because the visitors love to buy the “Made in the USA” products. The quality conscious locals patronized the commissary section because they feel they are being served well the same as their American counter part. American style houses dominate the base camp with complete amenities and luxuries that can only be found inside the beautifully designed structures. The serenity of the place makes the base camp the favorite place for social activities or gatherings. The Camp John Hay of old was totally gone. Brought by the changing world of politics and vested interests, the prevailing system of things ultimately eliminated the once selfless image of Camp John Hay. At present, the base camp is exclusively used by the rich and famous. Ordinary folks are restricted and no longer permitted to do the things that they used to do when the base camp was under the US Military Command. Luxury hotels and European mansions now dominate Camp John Hay. Old pine trees – that was nurtured by the Americans and the local employees – were cut down to accommodate the new structures.

In this introductory novel Minneapolis homicide detective Lucas Davenport, creator of computer games in his spare time, faces an intelligent serial killer who leaves behind messages stating his rules for avoiding detection. As the chase escalates, the killer, known as maddog, tries to outwit Davenport by doing something other than what Davenport will expect him to do. At the same time Davenport pursues maddog by thinking like a computer gamer. Davenport's income from computer games allows him to drive a Porsche, but his personal life is a mess. When his girlfriend, newspaper reporter Jennifer Carey, tells him she's pregnant, Davenport immediately says they should get married. But Jennifer refuses; she knows that Lucas is not cut out for marriage and traditional family life. Davenport wastes little time in proving Jennifer correct. (Reviewed August 15, 1997)

40. A Little History Camp John Hay
With its March weather almost like San Francisco, Baguio became the Americans’ summer capital and camp john Hay became their rest and recreation base.
http://www.usmilitarypi.com/johnhay_history.htm
A Little History of Camp John Hay
By Jun Ventura PHILSTAR.COM Publish Date: [Saturday, April 13, 2002] Baguio used to be a native Ibaloi hamlet called "kafagway" which means "a wide open space." The name later became "Baguio," which comes from the abundant moss called "bagiw." The Americans only accidentally discovered Baguio while in pursuit of Filipino revolutionaries in November 1899. With an average temperature of 20 centigrade (the lowest recorded temperature is 6.3 centigrade on January 18, 1961), the American colonizers found the perfect place for their troops to escape the tropical heat and in the process save money (they would have otherwise sent them back to the mainland). In the Second World War, this peaceful vacation camp was ironically the first to be bombed by the Japanese. Fittingly, the surrender of all Japanese forces by General Yamashita, known as the "Tiger of Malaya," was held inside Camp John Hay. After the Americans left, the Filipinos took control and in a public bidding in September 1996, the Fil-Estate group won the rights to develop this vast 300-hectare camp.
