E invece no."

Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by Italo Calvino
This is a brief discussion of Italo Calvino and, of course, of some books by Italo Calvino
A Few Words About Italo Calvino
Italo Calvino makes deceptively easy reading. I say "deceptively" because even his simplest little tales have well-anchored meanings and things to say to us, but those meanings and things are dextrously and subtly woven into the soft fabric of the tales. One can read any Calvino short story or novel purely for the fun, the pleasure, of reading an amusing and well-crafted tale; but, if one chooses to reflect, one also extracts a lesson.
Calvino's works cover a spectrum from clearly "mainstream" (though even then fanciful in their telling) to manifestly fantasy; necessarily, several of his books lie in that curious shadowy zone in which it is hard to say if they are fantasy or not. In the larger sense, none of that matters, because all of his books are excellent and worth readingwhich ones to include here, in these lists, is the only question that arises. I have, with Calvino, taken the broad view and included, for example, The Baron in the Trees (though doing so makes me feel guilty for having omitted G.K. Chesterton's novel

"The Parallels!" Italo Calvino and Jorge Luis Borges
John Barth I discovered Italo Calvino's fiction in 1968, the year Cosmicomics appeared in this country in William Weaver's translation. I was teaching then at the State University of New York at Buffalo and had fallen much under the spell of Jorge Luis Borges, whom I had discovered just a couple of years earlier. In that condition of enchantment I had published in '68 a sort of protopostmodernist manifesto called "The Literature of Exhaustion" and also my maiden collection of short stories, entitled Lost in the Funhouse and subtitled Fiction for Print, Tape, Live Voice (that particular deployment of the term "fiction" is of course a salute to Borges's ficciones ). In short, the ground had been prepared for my delight in Calvino's Cosmicomics and then in his t zero stories, which appeared in Mr. Weaver's English the following year. Here, I thought, was a sort of Borges without tears, or better, a Borges con molto brio: lighter-spirited than the great Argentine, often downright funny (as Sr. Borges almost never is), yet comparably virtuosic in form and language, comparably rich in intelligence and imagination.

    36. Italo Calvino And Inevitability In Storytelling
2 Literature as projection of desire (1969) in italo calvino, The Uses of Literature (New York Harcourt Brace, 1986; trans. Patrick Creagh), p. 50.
    http://pov.imv.au.dk/Issue_18/section_1/artc13A.html
    P.O.V. No.18 - Storytelling
Italo Calvino and inevitability in storytelling
Richard Raskin NB. This article is based on Calvino's Six Memos for the Next Millennium - a series of lectures he was to have given at Harvard University in 1985-1986 but didn't live to deliver. Though he had intended to give six lectures, as indicated in the title of this work, he had written only five of them at the time of his death in 1985. They were entitled: "Lightness," "Quickness," "Exactitude," "Visibility" and "Multiplicity." The sixth was to have been written at a later point in Cambridge, and would have been called "Consistency." The reader is asked to bear in mind that I am taking considerable liberties in using Calvino's thoughts selectively and for my own purposes, thereby doing what Calvino himself described in another context when he stated: "everyone mines every book for the things that are useful to him." Introductory note
It is sometimes claimed that events in any given story should follow one another in such a way that the trajectory they trace appears to be necessary, so that the listener, reader or viewer is left with a feeling that things had to turn out the way they did, that no other outcome was possible.

    Cosmicomics
    by Italo Calvino
    Synopsis by Kelly Evans
Each chapter of Cosmicomics begins with a blurb which sounds like the dry, tasteless extract of a physics, astronomy or geology textbook, describing how solar systems formed from nebula, the universe started from a point smaller than an atom, the orbit of the moon changed long ago, dinosaurs became extinct, space is curved, expands, etc. On each of these topics, our narrator, Qfyfq, immediately launches. His idiosyncratic voice, omniscient, blithering, self-centered, unerring, ridiculous, is recognizable, exactly consistent, no matter if he is talking about his life as a mollusk, a dinosaur, a moon-being before color, or life before there was form, when the whole family lived on a nebula, or in the point before space. Most of Qfyfq's friends and relatives have unpronounceable names. Xlthlx, Rwzfs, Mrs. Vhd Vhd, the beloved Mrs. Ph (i) Nk0 (actually a special typeset must have been developed, now that I think about it, since my keyboard doesn't have all the options necessary to even write these names), Z'zu, De XuaeauX, etc. However, they, and he, have distinctly human foibles (neuroses, competitiveness, love triangles, gambling, boredom, incomprehension of their bodies and environment), although in most cases they are not human. And while Qfyfq tells tales of many different lives, seemingly beginningless, which seem to imply transmigration and transformation, all mention of death and birth is conspicuously absent.
