Scott Fitzgerald. Callaghan preferred to be known for his novels. It's his short stories however that will be his lasting legacy—along with the fact that he knocked down Hemingway. For as much as we appreciate he was the first Canadian author to rank among the modern greats, and as much as we can love the man's sincere, liberal heart and thoughtful mind as revealed in his writing, we can't help but feel there is something old-fashioned about his longer writing. Something of the kindly raconteur that does not quite go with the cut-and-thrust of modern novels. Something that exists in his short stories too, but which is constrained there by the form, compressed and made harder. Callaghan never really learned the different rhythms and intensities of the longer form (until perhaps very late in his career strangely), and his novels usually seem like long short stories.

As a young man, Callaghan joined The Toronto Star, where he met Hemingway for the first time, and where the seeds of his literary career were planted. Callaghan became a literary sensation at the youthful age of 25. When he and his new bride Loretto traveled to Paris in 1929, they counted among their friends James Joyce, Miro, Fitzgerald and, of course, Hemingway. But as much as Callaghan was feted abroad, his reception in Canada was always a bit more rocky. One Toronto bookseller refused to keep any copies of his first book, Strange Fugitive. Years later, when he received the Governor-General's award in 1951 for The Loved and the Lost, some critics still thought it was embarrassing, implausible, almost snobbishly liberal. His final years were ones of vindication and heartbreak. After years of being in the critical doghouse, Callaghan became the grand old man of Canadian literature. Sadly, however, he wouldn't be able to savour those moments with his wife and partner. Loretto died in 1984, after years of failing health. In the twilight of his life, Callaghan, headed back to Paris for a poignant, final visit to the city that had beckoned once before. He died three years later in 1990 at age 87.

(Full name Morley Edward Callaghan) Canadian novelist, short story writer, journalist, playwright, and autobiographer. The following entry provides criticism on Callaghan's works from 1992 through 1999. For criticism prior to 1992, see CLC, Volumes 3, 14, 41; for an obituary entry on Callaghan, see CLC, Volume 65.
    INTRODUCTION
Callaghan is best known for his allegorical fiction in which he infuses seemingly ordinary human relationships with complex moral, psychological, and religious significance. His prominent themes include redemption and salvation, the discrepancies between illusion and reality, and the conflict between materialism and spiritualism. He established a solid reputation during the 1930s as a significant new fiction writer, and his short stories were especially well received. In the 1940s, however, Callaghan ceased writing short fiction, concentrating instead on long, complex novels that generally met with slight critical favor. Callaghan's publications of the 1970s and 1980s renewed interest in his career, and he is now regarded as an important figure in twentieth-century Canadian literature.
