James M. Cain
James M. Cain was born in Annapolis on July 1, 1892. He was raised in Chestertown, Maryland, and graduated from Washington College, where his father was president. After serving in World War I, he returned to Baltimore where he began working as a reporter. He first worked for the Baltimore American and then for the Baltimore Sun until 1923. After a time in New York, Cain moved to Hollywood. There he tried screenwriting, but found greater success when he turned to fiction. His first novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice , was published in 1934 and was a runaway bestseller. Cain returned to Maryland in 1948, settling in Hyattsville. He continued to write and was a familiar figure on the College Park campus. James M. Cain died October 27th, 1977. Cain did not write mysteries or detective fiction; he wrote novels of crime, sex and violence. The majority of Cain's plots follow the same predictable plan: a man falls for a woman, becomes involved in criminal activity with the woman, and is eventually betrayed by the woman. Although predictable, this basic plot line was used to great success, and continues to be serviceable today such as in the Cain-inspired films Body Heat or Blood Simple . Cain's writing style is hard boiled, pared down to essential phrases with terse, almost brutal simplicity.

  • Cain, James M(allahan) 1892–
Cain, an American "tough guy" novelist, is best known for The Postman Always Rings Twice and Mildred Pierce . (See also Contemporary Authors , Vols. 17-18.) A world immense with freedom, women hellish and infantile by turns, money, power, the tantalizing promise of adventure—these are the common elements of James M. Cain's novels. His reputation is by this time a vague one, grown generalized and perhaps sentimentally overrated (along with the reputations of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler) since he is no longer "read." We have Camus, we have the films of Jean-Luc Godard, we have any number of cryptic realists who can give us Cain's pace and excitement without Cain's flaws— and in the form of art. Though he deals constantly with the Artistic, Cain, it will be said, never manages to become an artist; there is always something sleazy, something eerily vulgar and disappointing in his work.... UNPUBLISHED (CORRECTED) TYPESCRIPT: MINSTREL BOY
(1947) Original, heavily corrected, typescript of MINSTREL BOY, 18 pages,. In 1947, Cain began writing a profile of the director, John Ford, for the purpose of promoting Ford's latest movie, "Fort Apache". It was entitled "Minstrel Boy" and Cain was paid $3,000 by Ford's studio, Argosy Films. Cain had warned the studio that the article might not be bought, and indeed, it was not. But of the $3,000 Swanson received 10% and Cain insisted on giving Harold Ober $300 for trying to sell it, which he never did (Roy Hoopes, James Cain, NY:1982). Cain's meticulous style shows through on every page, as he brings this biographical essay to its final form. Whole sentences are deleted and re-written, some into the margins; approximately 10,000 words of John Ford biography and movie criticism. Unpublished.

Have you read the two writers who have so often been identified with Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler?
    CAIN
I read a few pages of Dashiell Hammett, that's all. And Chandler. Well, I tried. That book about a bald, old man with two nympho daughters. That's all right. I kept reading. Then it turned out the old man raises orchids. That's too good. When it's too good, you do it over again. Too good is too easy. If it's too easy you have to worry. If you're not lying awake at night worrying about it, the reader isn't going to, either. I always know that when I get a good night's sleep, the next day I'm not going to get any work done. Writing a novel is like working on foreign policy. There are problems to be solved. It's not all inspirational.
