weather here

(This article adapted from The Tributary, March 2000) Tim Cahill, Mishap Maestro What to do? If you’re Tim Cahill, world-traveler, acclaimed outdoor writer, and longtime Livingston local, turning back is not an option. "What we did was approach these guys on the street, in public, and say ‘would you guys like to be our bodyguards? We’ll pay you for it.’" The trick was just bold enough to work, and the group, now warlord-strong, resumed its journey northward. When they reached the mines a fierce sandstorm whipped up, and after it was over one of their party was missing. Guessing that he’d been kidnapped by the Arab mine-owners, Cahill and his friends offered ransom. But the Arabs denied any involvement. "We found him the next day," remembers Cahill. "He’d gotten lost in the storm. He was about ten miles away, holed up in an old French Foreign Legion fort, hiding from the Arabs." "Now there’s an ideal mishap," says Cahill. "It’s got politics, revolution, people lost in the sand" – in other words, something to write about. For therein lies the secret to Cahill’s award-winning travel writing: something has to go wrong. And for the tall, thick-bearded, interminably affable author of six books and over 300 articles, something usually does.

Tim Cahill's brother jailed for six years
January 8, 2008
Tim Cahill with his brother Sean.
The brother of Socceroos star Tim Cahill has been jailed for six years in Britain for assaulting a man who was left partially blind from the attack. Sean Cahill, 29, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent by a jury in a London court last November. Croydon Crown Court judge Robert Rhodes sentenced Cahill to six years in jail, saying his attack on 31-year-old Christopher Stapley during a brawl near a south London nightclub three-and-a-half years ago was "extremely serious". Cahill, who stood stony-faced with his hands folded in front of him as his sentence was read out, will be able to apply for bail after three years. Before being led out of the courtroom, Cahill was hugged and kissed by his mother Sisifo, who returned to her seat and sobbed while being comforted by friends.

More Tim Cahill news Tim Cahill
Australian international Tim Cahill has completed his move to Everton for an undisclosed fee after agreeing a four-year deal with David Moyes' side in July 2004. Cahill had been linked with a move to Crystal Palace but the deal collapsed at the last minute. The midfielder has described the move to Goodison as a dream come true and said: "I desperately wanted to come to Everton and to improve myself and the club. "It's very emotional for myself, because it's been a long-term battle to come to a place like this and I'm just very happy and very fortunate to come to a club like Everton.

    Tim Cahill
Sydney born Tim Cahill was David Moyes' second summer signing of the 2004/05 close season - after a move from Millwall, which he described as 'a dream come true'. So determined was Tim to forge a career in professional football that he left behind family and friends in Australia at the age of 16, travelling halfway round the world to try his luck in England. He has already been well rewarded and looks to have the potential to go all the way to the top. A forceful, strong running midfielder, he is remarkably good in the air for a player of only average height. Tim made 250 appearances during his seven-year spell at the New Den, in which he scored a total of 57 goals. In his last season there, he made an FA Cup Final appearance at the Millennium Stadium against Manchester United. His international career began at the tender age of 14, when he represented Western Samoa, but since then he has become eligible to play for his native Australia and was called up to their 2004 Olympic team.

29. Tim Cahill (Bold Type Magazine)
Interview and excerpt from his 2002 book Hold the Enlightenment More Travel Less Bliss.
http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0902/cahill/
Twenty five years ago, Tim Cahill took American adventure writing back to its roots in the outdoor tales of Cooper, Twain and Hemingway. Ever since, his first-person adventure columns in Outside magazine have single-handedly pioneered a new literary form where the pursuit of heroic quests in remote locales frequently trips over hidden obstacles or bumps into the modest limits of the writer's skills in the hairy-chested outdoor arts. Now, with the publication of Hold the Enlightenment, More Travel Less Bliss , Cahill again boldly gallumphs forth in the footsteps of his previous Pecked to Death by Ducks, A Wolverine is Eating My Leg, and Pass the Butterworms . Whether he's running from bandits in the Sahara, chasing narcoterrorists in Colombian or simply going for a swim with great white sharks, Cahill risks life and limb to take his readers beyond where even the most intrepid of them would go themselves. He also gets peed on by chimps, suffers paralyzing bouts of panic and falls off a cliff. Adventure and misadventure, Cahill suggests, can look an awful lot alike when you're in the midst of either one. Cahill notes that there are more unfriendly people with guns here than in his earlier books, but he also spends plenty of time contemplating places where peril doesn't lurk.

Updated November 12, 2007 07:18:00 Spectacular equaliser: Tim Cahill scores with an overhead kick (Getty Images: Mark Thompson) Everton's Australian midfielder Tim Cahill scored a spectacular last-minute equaliser to earn his side a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the English Premiership overnight. Meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Chelsea's rivals Manchester United handed Blackburn a reality check and pulled clear at the top of the table with a 2-0 win at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, Tottenham hammered Wigan 4-0 to claim their first league win under new manager Juande Ramos, Aston Villa emerged 2-1 winners from their local derby at Birmingham and Bolton shared the points with fellow strugglers Middlesbrough after a goalless draw at the Reebok. Sir Alex Ferguson's side advantage over Chelsea is now five points after the Londoners were hit by Cahill's athleticism.

Metamorphosis used to vaguely tickle my curiosity in geography class at school, but other than that, I have absolutely no interest in geology. I still managed to read Cahill's detailed narration in National Geographic on Death Valley in one shot, without yawning.
For those of you who don't know about Death Valley other than being a set for Star Wars, it's a valley in California that is recognized as the lowest point of the Western Hemisphere and one of the hottest places on the planet; it covers an area of 3-million acres.
It's called Death Valley after some explorers got lost there around 1845; although only one of them died, they all thought that it would be their grave.
What makes the place interesting other than it's grim and forbidding name, is that it has sand-dunes as well as snow-capped mountains; multicolored rocks that move, and canyons. It is home to the
