Tim Cahill was born on 6th December 1979, in Sydney, Australia. He signed for Millwall in 1998 and made only one appearance that season, however he gradually became an integral part of Millwall's midfield. Cahill's career only really took off in the 2003-2004 season when he helped Millwall to reach the FA Cup final, only to lose to Manchester United 3-0. Tim Cahill was spotted by Everton's scouts and in the summer of 2004 he moved to Goodison Park. Illustration by Tim Bower
These are hurricane-force winds, and I once tried to write about what they sound like when you're sitting in a reasonably well-constructed house. I wrote that "the wind whistled and boomed." A copy editor, unfamiliar with brisk weather, deleted the word "boomed" and wrote a stern note in the margin. "The wind," she declared, "does not boom."
Well, yeah, it does. When the wind hits our little town, I hear this constant, groaning, deep-bass whistle and then a sudden 80-mile-an-hour (129-kilometer-an-hour) gust hits my wood-frame home like an immense fist in a velvet glove and the house "booms." This is good news for some of my friends. They sit and listen and count both the booms and the time between them. If the former number is getting larger and the latter smaller, it is likely time to go body-flying. Frequent gusts of 70 miles an hour (113 kilometers an hour) and above make for perfect body-flying weather.
You gear up in swim goggles and a sturdy parka, then drive to the top of a mesa above a notoriously windy flat. It is a good idea to open the windows of the car before you get out. The breeze could easily make off with your car door if you open it to the wind without lowering the window. You just stand there, sadly watching your sheet metal rolling and hopping and bouncing across the top of the mesa until it disappears into the distance.

Timothy Cahill (born December 6, 1979 in Sydney) is a midfield player and is widely regarded as one of the brightest rising stars in Australian football (soccer). In the 2003-2004 season, Tim Cahill was the workhorse in Millwall's heroic campaign which led Millwall to the FA Cup final for the first time in their history and a UEFA Cup place. Cahill made 250 appearances for The Lions, scoring 57 goals. Before the start of the 2004-2005 season, Cahill signed for Everton, for whom he has become a top player and earned respect throughout the Premiership. The midfielder only made his debut for the Australian national team, in 2004, as a result of his having played for Samoa at Under-20 level at the age of 14. His debut was against South Africa in June of that year. He participated at the 2004 Olympic Games. Tim was named Oceania Footballer of the Year for 2004, joining Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, Brett Emerton, Christian Karembeu and Mark Bosnich among some of the past winners of the award, which has existed since 1988. On 16 November 2005 at Sydney's Telstra Stadium, Cahill played a full-game as the Socceroos defeated Uruguay and qualified for the 2006 World Cup in a dramatic penalty shoot-out. Cahill was the official player and players' player of the season at Everton for the 2004/2005 season after he finished as the club's top scorer. In August 2005 Cahill's contract at Everton was extended on improved terms reflecting the impact he had made at the club.

Random House interview Over the past two decades, Tim Cahill has established a reputation as America's best known (and funniest) adventure travel writer. A founding editor of Outside Magazine , he is the author of seven books, including Hold the Enlightenment Pass the Butterworms A Wolverine is Eating My Leg Jaguars Ripped My Flesh ... Pecked to Death By Ducks , and Road Fever . In April, his book about Yellowstone, Lost in My Own Backyard , will be published as part of the Crown Journeys series. He is an editor at large for Outside , and his work appears in National Geographic Adventure The New York Times Book Review , and other national publications. He lives in Montana. How did you get started traveling? I was 10 years old and told my father that "all the other kids" got to go to Florida or Arizona, and I never got to go anywhere. He said the YMCA swimming team traveled all over the state (Wisconsin) and that if I made the team I could go. I did in fact make the team and went to such exotic locales as Beloit and Fond du Lac and Green Bay. In fact, I set state records for my age group. As a result, I believe I have always associated travel with intense physical effort. These days I do a lot of "rough" travel to remote places.

I love his adventurous spirit, but even more, I love the way he subtly educates us about the world in his writing by the respect he brings to the places and people he meets, and by the narrative twists he often uses to illuminate the folly of our own preconceptions. I interviewed him a few weeks ago when he was in San Francisco promoting his new book, "Pass the Butterworms." Why did you get into travel writing in the first place; what was the impulse behind it?
