Choose your Fate: Background Summary Characters Applications/Essays ... Full Text (external, MIT Readings Links Other Back to Works page Background Shakespeare wrote The Tragedy of Julius Caesar in 1599. Like Romeo and Juliet , this play is a tragedy. You do not feel pity for the death of Caesar like you do for the two lovers, though. Caesar isn’t an innocent man and his power has become corrupt. The play still captures human interest, but it is not for the sentimental romance of Romeo and Juliet . It is because the issues that the characters face are so applicable today. Julius Caesar deals with corrupt governments, one’s conscience, doing what will be good for everyone rather than thinking about one’s self, and the ability to change the populace’s minds. It also reaches into the area of grandness and becoming too ambitious. The title is a bit misleading because the play’s focus is not really Caesar. Caesar is killed about halfway through the play. Most people will agree that Brutus is the true hero in Julius Caesar . The play is about the internal conflict in Brutus over whether or not he should kill a friend for the good of the Roman people. Brutus is someone who remains good from the beginning to the end of the play. In the final scene, Mark Antony even says, "This was the noblest Roman of them all," when looking down at Brutus.

Caius Julius Caesar (100 bc - 44 bc)
What is the psychological identity of Caius Julius Caesar , the most notorious Roman statesman and military leader of his time?
Let's look at Caesar from the viewpoint of Phrenology . The skillful hands of contemporary master sculptors have provided us with some marvellously crafted heads of the heroes of Antiquity. The illustrated Caesar head can be admired in the archaeological museum in Torino, Italy. Let's first take a look at Caesar's forehead. Is he a practical or a theoretical mind? Oh no, Caesar is certainly not a philosopher. However, his front is of a perfect architecture:
  • Extreme width Nice height, even at the sizes Extremely well developed base, which even covers the eyes (1)

  • This comes together with a very strong development of Individuality (2): very strong perceptions, practical orientation, taking into account every element.
  • The front is slightly sloping: the lower part of it is more developed then the upper part. Thus: realist, objective type. The Causality (2) is rather negative.

    SYNOPSIS
This 1953 version of JULIUS CAESAR is one of Hollywood's more successful screen adaptations of Shakespeare. In an attempt to be true to Shakespeare's words and intentions, producer John Houseman and director Joseph L. Mankiewicz authentically preserved the characters, actions and themes created by the great playwright, but adapted the drama to the technology of the day and the dynamics of a contemporary audience. JULIUS CAESAR is the story of a man's personal dilemma over moral action, set against a backdrop of strained political drama. Brutus, a respected and influential Roman citizen, is approached by Cassius to join the conspiracy to assassinate Caesar. After a series of victories, Julius Caesar, autocrat of Rome, returns to Italy having defeated Pompey's sons, a triumph that makes his popularity greater than ever. Brutus, one of Caesar's closest friends, is torn with indecision. He loves Caesar and knows he is a good leader, but fears, as the others do, that ambition will drive Caesar to tyranny. Convinced that to kill his friend is essential to the liberty of Rome, Brutus agrees to join the conspiracy.

Julius Caesar was born in 100 B.C. to a patrician family that claimed descent from Aeneas, mythical founder of Rome, and his mother, the goddess Venus. He was one of the greatest speakers, writers, and generals of republican Rome, and he quickly rose through a succession of offices to become dictator. Among those who opposed him were the sons of Pompey the Great, whom Caesar had defeated in 48 B.C. He defeated them at the battle of Munda in 45 B.C., after which the Senate voted him the title imperator for life and the right to wear the laurel wreath, the sign of the victorious general hailed by his troops. As Caesar's power grew and he accepted honors appropriate to a king and even a god, Roman aristocrats formed a plot and had him assassinated on the Ides of March, 44 B.C.
Julius Caesar's coinage before 44 B.C. used the traditional types struck for his army, making reference to his own achievements and to his claim that his family was descended from Aeneas and Venus. But in 44 B.C. he also began to issue coins bearing his own portrait, the first of a Roman to appear on a coin in his own lifetime, and he thereby established the model for Roman imperial coinage. The portrait depicts Caesar in the "veristic" style typical of the late republic, in which experience and wisdom are suggested by an apparently truthful record of the person's advanced age. He is shown with a very long, lined neck, a prominent Adam's apple, lined cheeks, and a high, lined forehead that hints at the baldness he is said to have tried to conceal with the laurel wreath (Suetonius

Act 1: The Plot is Hatched
The story opens on a street in Rome, where two tribunes, Flavius and Marullus, disperse a crowd that is celebrating the return of the greatest ruler of the day, Julius Caesar. The tribunes, fearful of Caesar's ever-increasing power, berate the assembled commoners for their shortsightedness and fickle loyalties. Marullus reminds the cobblers and carpenters that Caesar has conquered another Roman, the noble Pompey: O you hard hearts, you cruel men of Rome

Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... S > Julius Caesar Scaliger
Julius Caesar Scaliger
(It., DELLA SCALA). Humanist , b. at Riva on Lake Garda in 1484; d. at Agen France , 21 Oct., 1558. He was brought to France as physician to Antonio de la Rovera, Bishop of Agen , and became a French citizen under the name of Jules Cesar de l'Escale de Bordonis. He took part in the discussion concerning Ciceronianism and began his career as a humanist by a violent work against Erasmus , "Oratio pro Cicerone contra Erasmum" (Paris 1531). He defended the absolute perfection of Cicero's style and denounced Erasmus as a mere proof corrector, a parasite, and a parricide. Erasmus kept silence. In 1536 Scaliger issued a still more violent discourse. The two discourses were combined: "Adversus D. Erasmum orationes duae eloquentiae romanae vindices cum auctoris opusculis" (Toulouse, 1621). He wrote a more solid work in a calmer tone in "De causis linguae latinae libri XIII" (Lyons, 1540; Geneva, 1580), in which he analyzed the correct style of Cicero and indicated 634 mistakes of Valla and his predecessors. He was the first to attempt a systematic treatise on poetry: "Poetices Libri Septem" (Geneva, 1561; Leyden, 1581; Heidelberg, 1607). The general principles of this work are derived from
