Caesar's inheritance (44-27)
The conspirators wanted to restore the republic, but instead, another round of horrors followed. There were troops; there were politicians who aspired to Caesar 's autocratic power; and they were prepared to use the troops. Marc Antony, the consul , was now the official head of the state, and his first act was to secure the co-operation of the commander of Caesar's troops outside Rome, Lepidus . Shortly after sunset, he confiscated Caesar's papers and treasury. Having the men and the money, he could negotiate from a position of strength, and on March 16, he announced a meeting of the Senate , which was to take place on the next day. During this meeting, he dictated the murderers a compromise: they were to receive amnesty while Caesar's acts were to be respected, and he would be worshipped as a god. From now on, Marc Antony was in charge of the city.

Caesar Augustus
www.caesar-augustus.com Perched on the cliff edge, towering 1000 feet above sea level, the Caesar Augustus offers guests a truly breathtaking panorama which is arguably the most spectacular of any hotel in Europe. From the hotel's flower decked terraces and beautifully appointed bedrooms and suites one can gaze out over the entire bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento and the island of Ischia - spectacular scenery the beauty of which bewitched the celebrated novelist Axel Munthe whose villa can be found just moments away from the hotel.
The hotel's recently built Infinity swimming pool has been cleverly designed so as to create the illusion of merging into the sea beyond. The sun decks, where guests can soak in the Mediterranean sunshine in blissful privacy, are bordered by divinely scented flower gardens.
The stylishly designed and supremely elegant suites are in perfect harmony with the buildings traditional architecture. Half a century ago, King Farouk of Egypt used to reserve what is now called The Farouk Suite for year long periods.

Head of Caesar Augustus
Rome, ca. A.D. 30-50 Marble. Height: 21 1/2 in. (55 cm)
Transfer from University Collections. 68.277 Octavian Caesar (63 B.C. A.D. 14), great-nephew and heir to Julius Caesar (assassinated in 44 B.C. ), defeated the troops of Marc Antony and Queen Cleopatra of Egypt in 31 B.C. , marking the end of the Roman Republic. A grateful Roman Senate bestowed upon him the name "Augustus." He ruled Rome from 31 B.C. until his death in A.D. 14 as its first emperor. Augustus strove to return peace and prosperity to the empire, and the period was characterized by a series of new laws he instituted.
Portraits of Augustus were many, and two general types have emerged: the earlier "Octavian," and the later "Augustan." This portrait is an example of the latter, noticeably lacking the wide cranium, heavy brow, and prominent ears of the "Octavian." "Augustan" portraits derive their less individualized and more idealized features from earlier Greek sculpture and mostly date from shortly after Augustus's death and subsequent deification. This sedate, idealizing form of representation continued in various forms during the remainder of the Early Empire, which came to an end in A.D.

or Octavian orig. Gaius Octavius later Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus
    born Sept. 23, 63 BC
died Aug. 19, AD 14, Nola, near Naples
First Roman emperor. Born to a wealthy family, at age 18 he was named adoptive son and heir of his great-uncle Julius Caesar . After Caesar's assassination (44 BC ) a power struggle ensued, and several battles later Octavian formed the Second Triumvirate with his chief rivals, Lepidus and Mark Antony . Octavian disposed of Lepidus in 32 and Antony (then allied with Cleopatra ) at the Battle of Actium in 31 to become sole ruler. He was anointed princeps ; the Roman Empire is said to begin with his accession. At first he ruled as consul , maintaining republican administration, but in 27 he accepted the title Augustus and in 23 he received imperial power. His rule (31 BC AD 14) brought changes to every aspect of Roman life and lasting peace and prosperity to the Greco-Roman world. He secured outlying imperial provinces, built roads and public works, established the Pax Romana , and fostered the arts. He took steps to rectify Roman morality, even exiling his daughter

    Augustus
From Simple English Wikipedia - the free encyclopedia that anyone can change
(Redirected from Augustus Caesar Jump to: navigation search Augustus Caesar Augustus September 23 63 BC August 19 ) was the first and one of the most important Roman Emperors. He led Rome into the first stages of becoming the mightiest empire the world had ever seen. Octavius Augustus Caesar was the adopted son of the dictator of the Roman Republic, Gaius Julius Caesar . Octavian came into power in the second triumvirate (3 men ruling as one body over the Roman Republic), along with Marcus Antonius ( Mark Antony ) and Lepidus. Augustus and Antonius were loyal to Julius Caesar, the assassinated dictator, killed in 44 BC. Following his death a civil war broke out across Rome, between those loyal to Caesar, and those loyal to Caesar's rival Pompey . There was short break in the war during the rule of the triumvirate, but Lepidus' death, and Mark Antony's staying in Egypt with Cleopatra , only resulted in further bloodshed. After winning this bloody power struggle, Octavian was voted as the first Emperor of Rome by the Senate following the battle of Actium in 31 BC, and he took the name "Augustus". He ruled until AD 14, when his stepson and son-in-law Tiberius became Emperor in his place.
