Introduction
The Background
To understand Augustus, it is necessary to appreciate briefly the nature of the Roman Revolution and, in particular, the place of Julius Caesar within it. The Roman Republic had no written constitution but was, rather, a system of agreed-upon procedures crystallized by tradition (the mos maiorum ca . 100 BC onwards. These generals also used their provincial commands to extract money from the locals as a way of funding their domestic political ambitions. As the conflict in the state wore on, popular assemblies, the only avenue for the passage of binding legislation in the Roman Republic, routinely ended in disorder and rioting. The senatorial aristocracy, riven by internal disputes, proved incapable of dealing effectively with the mounting disorder, yet the alternative, monarchy, was not openly proposed by anyone. When civil war erupted between Pompey and Caesar in 49 BC, few could have been surprised. These two men were the strongest personalities in the state, each in command of significant military forces, and they were mutually antagonistic. The people had loved Caesar, even if his recent behavior had been disappointing

Name at birth: Gaius Octavius The greatest ruler of Rome, Caesar Augustus was a conundrum: a ruthless politician and soldier who used his power to restore order and prosperity to Rome with such success that his reign (27 B.C. to 14 A.D.) became known as the Augustan Age. Born Gaius Octavius, he was named as the adopted heir of his great uncle Julius Caesar in Caesar's will. (At this point Octavius changed his name to Julius Caesar Octavianus; in his own era he was called Caesar, though in modern accounts he is usually called Octavian for clarity.) After the murder of Caesar in 44 B.C., Octavian formed an uneasy alliance with Julius Caesar's fellow soldier Marc Antony and the general Marcus Lepidus, an alliance known as the Second Triumvirate. The three spent several years conquering their common enemies, but Octavian and Antony finally turned on one another after Antony formed a political (and romantic) alliance with the Egyptian queen Cleopatra . Octavian defeated the combined forces of Antony and Cleopatra in the naval battle of Actium (31 B.C.) and became the absolute power in Rome. In 27 B.C. the Roman Senate added to his adopted name of Caesar the title Augustus (meaning "divine" or "majestic"). As emperor he expanded the borders of Rome and took a particular interest in civic and cultural affairs, building temples and theaters, improving aqueducts and supporting poets and historians like

He was careful to not meet the same fate as his great granduncle. Augustus was very respectful to the senators, but the Senate knew he controlled the army and could do as he pleased. The Roman army was so strong that it protected citizens from attacks from the tribes who lived beyond the empire. The powerful, professionally trained forces were divided into large units called legions. Each legion would have as many as 6,000 soldiers. Executive summary: Roman Emperor, 23 BC to 14 AD Augustus (from augeo , increase, venerable, majestic), the title given by the Roman senate, on the 17th of January 27 BC, to Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, or as he was originally designated, Gaius Octavius, in recognition of his eminent services to the state, and borne by him as the first of the Roman emperors. The title was adopted by all the succeeding Caesars or emperors of Rome long after they had ceased to be connected by blood with the first Augustus. Gaius Octavius was born in Rome on the 23rd of September 63 BC, the year of Cicero 's consulship and of Catiline 's conspiracy. He came of a family of good standing, long settled at Velitrae (Velletri), but his father was the first of the family to obtain a curule magistracy at Rome and senatorial dignity. His mother, however, was Atia, daughter of Julia, the wife of M. Atius Balbus, and sister of

Caesar Augustus Bust
Made from highest quality Carrara Marble with genuine bronze plated armor, this Caesar Augustus bust is sure to illuminate almost any room. The original bust was made from marble and was done after his death. Caesar Augustus became the first Roman emperor after the republic was destroyed by the dictatorship of his great-uncle and adoptive father, Julius Caesar. His autocratic regime is known as the principate because he was the princeps, the first citizen, at the head of that array of outwardly revived republican institutions that alone made his autocracy palatable. With unlimited patience, skill, and efficiency, he overhauled every aspect of Roman life and brought durable peace and prosperity to the Greco-Roman world.

After waiting 35 minutes for a shuttle to pick us up at the port we were whisked up to top of the island where the Caesar Augustus is located. It has one of the most amazing views I have ever seen. Unfortunately the positives end there. We waited an hour before our room was ready and were put in a long, rectangular room that did not have ANY view. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and was on rollers so it moved when you sat down. The food was mediocre at best and on several occasions we called for service only to be completely ignored. Perhaps our expectations were too high, but for 500 euro/night there should be more than just a view from the pool. ROOM: ATMOSPHERE: SERVICE: VALUE: RATING:

The room was large, but not terribly well-appointed; the terrace was also large with a fantastic view. Go to the edge and look down 500feet into the ocean. You are out on a cliff. Franco the concierge and Bruno the bartender are terrific. The owners could be friendlier and more gracious. But i would definitely go back.

PRINCEPS: The Life of Caesar Augustus PRINCEP: The Life of Caesar Augustus
The weather in mid-April in Apollonia was windy and wet. In that early spring of 44 BC, a slender 18-year-old man stood on the coast, looking due west across the Adriatic towards Italy. The letter he had just received from his stepfather and mother concerned the sudden death of an older relative. The decision he would reach because of it would changehistory and lead to the creation of Rome of the Caesars. The young Roman was Gaius Octavius, great-grand-nephew of Rome's supreme dictator, Gaius Julius Caesar. What he held in his hands was the news of the Ides of March. His mother, Atia (daughter of Caesar's sister, Julia) may have grieved for her uncle, but family advice was clear: even with the rumors that that Caesar had made Octavius his principal heir (and Caesar's wealth was incalculable), it was far too dangerous for Octavius to claim it. Rome was in turmoil; the assassination of Caesar by more than 40 senators had left the capital in a rage of fear and uncertainty. Marc Antony, remaining Consul, was busy consolidating his hold on Rome. A generation older than Octavius and, next to Caesar, the best general in Rome's legions, he could crush an unknown provincial like a gnat - or so said the voice of parental fear. This is the story of how an unknown youth with no military skills and no political experience wrested control of the greatest empire of the ancient world into his hands, remade it in his own image - and changed the world.

14. Caesar Augustus - Crystalinks
Augustus was deified soon after his death, and both his borrowed surname, Caesar, and his title Augustus became the permanent titles of the rulers of Rome
http://www.crystalinks.com/caesar_augustus.html
Caesar Augustus
Rise to power Augustus was born in Rome with the name Gaius Octavius Thurinus. His father, also Gaius Octavius, came from a respectable but undistinguished family of the equestrian order and was governor of Macedonia before his death in 58 BC. More importantly, his mother Atia Balba Caesonia was the niece of Rome's greatest general and de facto ruler, Julius Caesar. In 46 BC Caesar, who had no legitimate children, took his great-nephew soldiering in Hispania, and adopted him as his heir. By virtue of his adoption, he then assumed the name Gaius Julius Caesar. Roman tradition dictated that he also append the surname Octavianus to indicate his biological family, from which historians derive the name Octavian; no evidence exists that he ever used the name Octavianus, however. When Caesar was assassinated in March 44 BC, his young heir was with the army at Apollonia, in what is now Albania. At the time, he was only eighteen years old, and was consistently underestimated by his rivals for power. He gathered support by emphasizing his status as heir to Caesar and took the name Gaius Julius Caesar. He crossed over to Italy and recruited an army from among Caesar's veterans. In Rome, he found Caesar's republican assassins, Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius, in control. After a tense standoff, he formed an uneasy alliance with Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) and Marcus Lepidus, Caesar's principal colleagues. The three formed a junta called the Second Triumvirate, an explicit grant of special powers lasting five years and supported by law, unlike the unofficial First Triumvirate of Pompey, Caesar and Crassus.

The Life of Augustus
There are many indications that the Octavian family was in days of old a distinguished one at Velitrae; for not only was a street in the most frequented part of town long ago called Octavian, but an altar was shown there besides, consecrated by an Octavius. This man was leader in a war with a neighbouring town, and when news of a sudden onset of the enemy was brought to him just as he chanced to be sacrificing to Mars, he snatched the inwards of the victim from the fire and offered them up half raw; and thus he went forth to battle, and returned victorious. There was, besides, a decree of the people on record, providing that for the future too the inwards should be offered to Mars in the same way, and the rest of the victims be handed over to the Octavii. The family was admitted to the senate by king Tarquinius Priscus among the lesser clans;

Augustus Caesar
Dynasty XXXII
63 B.C.E. - 14 C.E.
Octavian Augustus is known as the first, and one of the greatest, Roman Emperors ever. Octavian enabled the long, peaceful time of the Pax Romana by changing Rome from a fragile, crumbling republican government to a mighty empire. Octavian was born on September 23, 63 B.C.E. His great-uncle was Julius Caesar and, therefore, he had many political connections in Rome. Caesar favored Octavian from an early age. In 48 B.C.E., Caesar had his fifteen-year-old great nephew elected to the priestly college of the pontifices, and he also enrolled him in the hereditary patrician aristocracy of Rome. Octavian joined Caesar in 46 B.C.E. on a campaign against Pompey Cleopatra and Antony. Octavian defeated his foes at the naval battle of Actium and became sole ruler of Rome. In 27 B.C.E., Octavian made a bold and clever political move by declaring the Republican Government restored. He immediately offered to resign from the position of consul, but the Senate, instead of accepting his offer, decided to give him the position of princeps. The Senate also gave him the name Augustus, meaning "revered one". The Senate decided to give Octavian control of the provinces of Gaul, Syria, Spain and Egypt. These areas had large numbers of troops stationed within their borders giving Octavian almost total military authority. While the household managed the daily affairs of the empire, Octavian made it his duty to beautify the city. He once said that he had found the city in brick, and left it in marble. Octavian reformed the tax system by taking a census to determine how much each province should pay in taxes. He held strong beliefs in traditional Roman religion. He restored over 80 temples and passed strict moral laws that mirrored older Roman values. When Octavian died in C.E. 14, his achievements seemed remarkable, and they would only become more remarkable as time passed. Octavian had adopted his stepson Tiberius and made it clear he would be his successor.

Enough has been written about the star-studded resorts on the island of Capri to fill a thousand magazines—and still there’s a side to the island that is unfamiliar to the boatloads of jaded tourists ferried in for the day, and the paparazzi-posing celebrities who check in at the Quisisana. Anacapri is the hilltop village, towering above the sea, and it’s not only in the literal sense that it is above it all: this is where the crowd-shy traveler checks in, to escape from industrialized tourism. The views are the main attraction at the Caesar Augustus Hotel; one imagines that Caesar himself would not settle for a cliffside hotel any less than a thousand feet above the Bay of Naples. The “infinity pool” is by now a familiar concept, but from this high perch it regains much of its novelty, and it’s easy to feel as tall as Mount Vesuvius from here.

by Wayne Blank Octavian, later known as Caesar Augustus, is only mentioned once in The Bible , when he ordered that a census be taken of the Roman world (see Ancient Empires - Rome ). That census caused the birth of Jesus Christ to occur in Bethlehem, exactly as prophesied (e.g. Micah 5:2), rather than in Nazareth where Joseph and Mary were then living. "In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee , from the city of Nazareth , to Judea , to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem , because he was of the house and lineage of David [see also The Chosen People and Ruth ], to be enrolled with Mary , his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn."
