65. BIBLIOHOLICA: Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series
cabell, james branch Figures of Earth (nov) cover by Robert Pepper cabell, james branch The Cream of the Jest (aug) cover by Brian Froud
http://phantasma.onza.net/biblio/lists/baf.html
BIBLIOHOLICA: Specific List * Ballantine Adult Fantasy series Ballantine published this mass market paperback line during the period of 1969 to 1974, with Lin Carter as its editorial consultant. Basically, books included in this line bear the "Unicorn's Head" colophon, but several others have just the word, "A Ballantine Adult Fantasy" on the upper left corner of its front cover. The titles included in this line somewhat vary because several books acquire "Unicorn's Head" logo in later printings. The closing date of this series is unclear, too. There are two types of "Unicorn's Head" logo. The first logo, I think, is for the first year titles. Others have the second version (simplified) logo.
I've listed the "essential" Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series books which Lin Carter indicated in his "Imaginary Worlds," and 1st printing titles with Unicorn's Head logo after the publication of the said title. Also listed here is the titles which could be called "pre-" Ballantine Adult Fantasy series. Lin Carter himself stated that he would have published them had they not, and although none of the titles bears the Unicorn's Head colophon, he listed them as a sort of preface to the Series proper. Note: The information here is based on my own BAF series collection and I do not claim this list is complete or definite. Please feel free to correct or add information. (There are several earlier titles, namely Tolkien books, I do not have in my library yet..... Cover images not shown will be uploaded when I dug them out from my collection.

THE LOST CLUB JOURNAL
James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) America's Greatest Mythmaker by Desmond Tarrant For you and I are going a queer way, in search of justice, over the grave of a dream and through the malice of time. Jurgen The great American scholar Vernon Louis Parrington wrote, in Main Currents of American Thought , that Cabell was: A self-reliant intellectual, rich in the spoils of all literature, one of the great masters of English prose, the supreme comic figure thus far granted us, he stands apart from the throng of lesser American novelists. . Who was Cabell, what was his philosophy of life, and what did he write? He was born into one of Virginia's leading families on the 14 April 1879 in Richmond, Virginia. In Mark Twain's last tragic years, Cabell was his chief reading. Cabell was directly descended from two distinguished Southern families. He married Priscilla Bradley, a little older than himself, and they lived for many years in Dumbarton Grange, Virginia, an eighteenth century house which provided the setting for many of his novels. Later, he moved to Monument Avenue, Richmond, where I met him in 1957. Priscilla was described as "fair, energetic, and charming". In Cabell's autobiography he explained how she was the heart of his spiritual development and the figure who most haunted his writings. Gradually, he became one of America's most learned authors, fully matching the New England Transcendentalists.

liberty to retire." He sipped his wine meditatively, as the men filed
out. "Monsieur de Frison," d'Arnaye resumed, when the arras had fallen,
"believe me, I grieve to interrupt your very moving and most excellently
phrased ballad in this fashion. But the hour is somewhat late for melody,
and the curiosity of old age is privileged. May one inquire, therefore,
why you outsing my larks and linnets and other musical poultry that are
now all abed? and warble them to rest with this pleasing butif I may
venture a suggestionrather ill-timed madrigal?" The young man hesitated for an instant before replying. "Sir," said he, at length, "I confess that had I known of your whereabouts, the birds had gone without their lullaby. But you so rarely come to this wing of the chateau, that your presence here to-night is naturally unforeseen. As it is, since chance has betrayed my secret to you, I must make bold to acknowledge it; and to confess that I love your niece."
