"Ultimately it's a writer's excellence as a writer, her strength of language, apart from all good intentions, that convinces us she is telling the truth. (Nieman) has an extraordinary sense of metaphor and a talent for expressive language that seems, at the same time, plain and straightforward, probably because it is so apt as to seem inevitable."

2003 Finalists Fiction The Half-Mammals of Dixie - George Singleton (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill)
This collection of stories shows Singleton's talent for combining the poignant with the hilariously absurd. They take place in the fictional Forty-Five, South Carolina, a town so tiny it missed the map. Tony Earley describes him as "a big-hearted evil genius who writes as if he were the love child of Alice Munro and Strom Thurmond". His stories nag at the corners of your mind long after you've read them and inspire sudden smirks as well as thoughtful sighs. Heaven of Mercury - Brad Watson (W. W. Norton)

Betty Adcock, Meredith's former poet in residence, will hold a poetry reading in Carswell Auditorium on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at 7 pm. A book signing will follow in the lobby of Carswell. The public is welcome to attend. Meredith College Hosts Reading by U.S., State Poets Laureate
The crowd gathered in Jones Chapel on March 21, 2006, heard about a wide variety of topics in a fairly short amount of time, including cancer, death of loved ones, landscapes, war, sandwiches and love between a mother and daughter. According to Kathryn Stripling Byer, these topics were all appropriate to the occasion. Byer joined United States Poet Laureate Ted Kooser for a poetry reading at Meredith College. Kooser said that he often writes about these ordinary things from a perspective that is removed from the subject matter. Kooser was named poet laureate of the United States in 2004 after writing verse since adolescence. Byer was appointed poet laureate of North Carolina in 2005.

Agee Agonistes: Essays on the Life, Legend, and Works of James Agee
edited by Mike Lofaro
(University of Tennessee Press, $48) A Death in the Family: A Restoration of the Author’s Text
edited by Mike Lofaro
(University of Tennessee Press, $49.95)
It was a big year for University of Tennessee Professor Mike Lofaro, and maybe for the reputation of Knoxville native James Agee, too; Lofaro edited not one but two thick hardback books about Agee, both published by UT Press. The first, Agee Agonistes: Essays on the Life, Legend, and Works of James Agee, is the more scholarly and probably esoteric of the two. It’s made up of polished versions of 17 papers presented at an Agee conference at UT in 2005, including discussions of Agee and surrealism, Agee and the South, Agee and ritual violence, some previously unpublished correspondence with the woman who was probably his final lover—and a rare memoir of Agee written by the conference’s guest of honor, his daughter Deedee, a New Yorker who began visiting her father’s home town only recently. Lofaro has been entirely transparent about his method; almost half the book is taken up with notes explaining exactly what he did where and why. But he keeps the narrative all together, with minimal interruption. The fact that the new version is interesting is undebatable. Whether it works better as a novel is for you to judge.

Now the sun Martin Bresnick's Falling (1993-94) is a song cycle based on two poems of Kathryn Stripling Byers, "Snowbird" and "Lost Soul", and David Bottoms' longer three part poem "In a U-Haul North of Damascus". These three poems have been arranged to form a four movement narrative of conflict, separation, and the possibility of consolation and renewal. High in the Georgia mountains a woman reflects on the unkept promises of her lover. He has left her, heading south through the darkness. He pauses just north of Damascus at a truck stop and ruefully recalls 'the sins I have tried to leave behind me.' Later that night she imagines he may yet return, but knows better than to respond 'when the wind shakes the latch on my door like a summons.' In the following early morning, as 'light is falling through the windows of my half-empty house,' he asks 'is it possible to fall toward grace?' At Midday At midday you steadied our boat on the riverbank
