How could it be a diminishment to celebrate the hearth where one gathers with the people one loves and nourishes and by whom one is nourished?" Despite recycling programs, wasteful ways are destroying air and water quality By Bobbi Buchanan In many American households, recycling bins have become as ubiquitous as the singular kitchen trash can. Curbside collection programs have grown rapidly in the past decade, and the United States is now recycling more than one-fourth of its municipal solid waste. ESSAY By Aimee Zaring If the "Greatest American" poll was truly intended to identify the one person who best embodies who we are as Americans, then what does the list of nominees, and the winner, tell us about what Americans value — or devalue — in today's society?

Hands All Around
was Willa Mae's favorite quilt pattern,
mine too, because I loved each one she quilted,
the way it showed what we must do for each other
creating the stitchery that love binds, our hands
reaching out to make something to shelter within, take our comfort inside when the days and nights seem much too long, much too difficult to be understood without making some beautiful thing from our losses and gifts, our despair and our strength, all of them gathered up into a pattern of simple connection, a patchwork of day by day living our lives, piecing moment by moment together, a comfort to pull up around us when we feel the wind on our faces, see night falling outside. We shelter inside what our hands make, remembering what keeps us warm during dark times, what helps us keep holding on

Where did the Scottish Byer family come from? What is the Scottish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Byer family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?
Spelling rules had not yet evolved in medieval Scotland, some names dating from that era often appear many different ways. Some spelling variations of Byer include Byers, Byres, Byer, Buyers, Byris and others. First found in East Lothian (Gaelic: Lodainn an Ear), a former county, sometimes known as Haddingtonshire located in the Lowland region surrounding the city of Edinburgh, where they were seated from ancient times. The Boernician-Scottish people who came to North America were often nearly penniless when they arrived, and brought very few personal effects with them. Much Scottish heritage was lost in the process, and it is only this century that highland games, clan societies, and other patriotic Scottish organizations have helped the ancestors of Scots to rediscover their national legacy. Byers were some of the first of the immigrants to arrive in North America: Henry, Jacob, and Nicholas Byer who arrived in Philadelphia Pa. betwen 1738 and 1844; Will Byers settled in Georgia in 1734; Alexander, Robert and John Byers arrived in Philadelphia between 1816 and 1867.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd Sue Monk Kidd's ravishing debut novel has stolen the hearts of reviewers and readers alike with its strong, assured voice. Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the town's fiercest racists, Lily decides they should both escape to Tiburon, South Carolinaa town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to a mesmerizing world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna who presides over their household. This is a remarkable story about divine female power and the transforming power of lovea story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

More North Carolina books
By D. G. Martin
Posted Tuesday, September 4, 2007 E-mail this page Printer-friendly page Chapel Hill, NC -How about a look at a new list of North Carolina related books to consider for your reading this fall? Like the summer reading list that I gave you a couple of months ago, these ten suggestions will appeal to different kinds of readers. Or, said another way, you are probably not going to want to read every one of them, but I bet that at least one or two of them would be good reads for you. The rest of them are ones you will be glad to know about. 1. You may question the North Carolina connection of Tim Madigan’s “I’m Proud of You: My Friendship with Fred Rogers.” But thanks to UNC-TV, Mr. Roger’s neighborhood has become a part of the North Carolina landscape and the growing-up memories for most of us. Madigan’s description of how Mr. Rogers became his friend shows how much it means for us to care about others. 2. Retired UNC-Wilmington professor Melton McLaurin’s “The Marines of Montford Point” tells the story of our country’s first black Marines. Using the voices of the Marines, the book takes its readers to Montford Point near Camp Lejeune and gives them a dose of the mixture of humiliation and pride that were a part of a black Marine’s experience in the 1940’s.
