Judith Callaway-Schaefer Betsy Byars is a prolific author of children's books, who began writing in the 1960s and has continued until the present. She has written about forty books, the most recent one being Tornado. Byars is popular: her books are sought in school libraries, and The Summer of the Swans won the Newbery Award in 1971. Although all of Byars' writing is fiction for children and young adults, it can arbitrarily be divided into three categories: (1) the fiction before the mid-1980s, all of which seems at least wistful (The Midnight Fox) if not downright somber (The Cartoonist). A subdivision of this category would be the books that use animals as a major part of the story. These first writings have the widest range of appeal as they are more realistic than the books after this time, and some even have great appeal for adults; (2) the cheerful recent books (the Bingo series, Coast to Coast, the Blossom series, etc.) for children 10 to 14 years old;

Betsy Byars
Betsy Byars began her writing career rather late in life. "In all of my school years, . . . not one single teacher ever said to me, 'Perhaps you should consider becoming a writer,'" Byars recalls. "Anyway, I didn't want to be a writer. Writing seemed boring. You sat in a room all day by yourself and typed. If I was going to be a writer at all, I was going to be a foreign correspondent like Claudette Colbert in Arise My Love . I would wear smashing hats, wisecrack with the guys, and have a byline known round the world. My father wanted me to be a mathematician." So Byars set out to become mathematician, but when she couldn't grasp calculus in college, she turned to English. Even then, writing was not on her immediate horizon. First, she married and started a family. The writing career didn't emerge until she was 28, a mother of two children, and living in a small place she called the barracks apartment, in Urbana, Illinois. She and her husband, Ed, had moved there in 1956 so he could attend graduate school at the University of Illinois. She was bored, had no friends, and so turned to writing to fill her time. Byars started writing articles for The Saturday Evening Post Look ,and other magazines. As her family grew and her children started to read, she began to write books for young people and, fortunately for her readers, discovered that there was more to being a writer than sitting in front of a typewriter.

Read Review of Betsy Byars - The Eighteenth Emergency Review Summary About the Author
Even Bullies Can Be Hurt
Feb 27 '06 (Updated Dec 27 '06)
Pros
Sensitively written, vivid, great characters, tells both sides of the story.
Cons Dated, sends a mixed message about violence. The Bottom Line A great book just for enjoyment, or for helping a child to deal with the idea of bullying. Full Review A sixth grader nicknamed "Mouse" likes to label things. All around his apartment, neighborhood, and school, he has taken a pencil and written labels and drawn arrows to things like cracks in plaster, cobwebs on the wall, etc. Some of the things he's written are quite clever and funny. Some are just obvious like writing "door" on the wall and drawing an arrow pointing at the door. One day, Mouse walks by a poster in the hallway of his school that depicts the early stages of man. Unable to resist, he pencils in "Marv Hammerman" complete with an arrow pointing directly at Neanderthal man. When Mouse looks up from his writing, Marv Hammerman - the school bully - is standing directly over him with a hurt look on his face. For the next few days, Mouse's life will be in turmoil as he tries to figure out how best to deal with the fact that the biggest, meanest boy in school is after him.
