Samuel Butler (1835 - 1902)
Samuel Butler spent only three years in New Zealand as a runholder in the headwaters of the Rangitata before returning to England, but the Canterbury experience gave him a significant base for a literary achievement of great distinction, and a well deserved reputation for irony and controversy. His most famous works, Erewhon Erewhon Revisited and The Way of All Flesh made him a cult figure in Britain and a leader in the intellectual emancipation from Victorian values. After his arrival in Lyttelton in 1859, Butler explored the Canterbury high country, found unclaimed sheep country, registered his claim against a rival after a famous race to Christchurch and called his station Mesopotamia ('between two rivers'). Resourceful and energetic, he doubled his capital and freed himself from the dominance of his father and the Anglican church at a time of great intellectual perplexity over the troubling findings of Charles Darwin. In the early chapters of Erewhon , Butler gave a realistic picture of the Canterbury high country and the land 'over the range', but the focus of the book is on the England he satirised through his description of Erewhonian society.

The literary instinct may be known by a man's keeping a small note-book in his waistcoat pocket, into which he jots down anything that strikes him, or any good thing that he hears said, or a reference to any passage which he thinks will come in useful to him. Samuel Butler Characters and Passages from Note-books , p. 344) Butler took the name of his hero from Spenser, and his great comedy cannot be understood without glancing back to The Faerie Queene . In Book II, which is concerned with Temperaunce, Sir Guyon reaches a castle inhabited by three sisters. The youngest loves pleasure, the second moderation, while the third is a sour hater of all delights. Sir Hudibras, who is contrasted with Sans-loy, the wooer of the younger sister, makes his suit to the eldest. In a stanza which throws a great deal of light on Hudibras , he is described as `an hardy man', Yet not so good of deeds, as great of name,
Which he by many rash adventures wan,
Since errant armes to sew he first began;
More huge in strength, then wise in workes he was,
And reason with foole-hardize ouer ran;

Samuel Butler Biography
About 2 pages (471 words) Samuel Butler (novelist) Summary
Encyclopedia of World Biography on Samuel Butler The English novelist and essayist Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was a critic of established religious, social, and scientific ideas. Samuel Butler was born on Dec. 4, 1835, in Langar, near Bingham, Nottinghamshire, the son of the local vicar. In a time of common paternal absolutism, his childhood seems to have been bleak and graceless. After taking a degree at Cambridge, he came into open conflict with his father over the question of his future profession, and at last he emigrated to New Zealand to become a sheep farmer. But though free of his father, he was not free of revolt, and the spirit of resentful rebelliousness marked much of his later life. In New Zealand he read Charles Darwin's Origin of Species and wrote a series of newspaper articles setting forth Darwin's ideas and ingeniously applying the evolutionary hypothesis to machines. Having made a modest fortune, he returned to England in 1864.

    Summary of Book IV Notes on Book IV Summary of Book V
    Book IV
    Telemachus and the son of Nestor stayed their horses at the gate, whereon Eteoneus servant to Menelaus came out, and as soon as he saw them ran hurrying back into the house to tell his Master. He went close up to him and said, "Menelaus, there are some strangers come here, two men, who look like sons of Jove. What are we to do? Shall we take their horses out, or tell them to find friends elsewhere as they best can?" Menelaus was very angry and said, "Eteoneus, son of Boethous, you never used to be a fool, but now you talk like a simpleton. Take their horses out, of course, and show the strangers in that they may have supper; you and I have staid often enough at other people's houses before we got back here, where heaven grant that we may rest in peace henceforward."
