British novelist, essayist, and critic. Descended from distinguished clergymen, he grappled for many years with Christianity and evolution, first embracing, then rejecting, Charles Darwin 's theories in his writings. He is best known for The Way of All Flesh (1903), his autobiographical novel that tells, with ruthless wit and lack of sentiment, the story of his escape from the suffocating moral atmosphere of his home circle. In his lifetime his reputation rested on the utopian satire Erewhon (1872), which foreshadowed the end of the Victorian illusion of eternal progress. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "Samuel Butler" from Britannica Concise Butler, Samuel - British poet and satirist. Home Science Technology Butler went to Shrewsbury School, where his grandfather had been headmaster before he retired; then in 1854 he went up to St John's College, Cambridge (his father's alma mater), collecting a First in Classics in 1858. To the age of twenty-three his career was strikingly ordinary for a young man whose father had so carefully crafted his eldest son's passage to the priesthood. Thomas Butler, of course, is reputedly the model for the vicious bully Theobald Pontifex in Butler's masterwork The Way of All Flesh , and it would seem that Butler senior was not disinclined to put pressure, both physical and psychological, on his son as he matured. The two men were never close, although by the time Butler left Cambridge he was fairly sure in his own mind of his wish to take orders. The Fair Haven . This event planted the first doubts about his faith in him, and he innocently began to correspond with his father on the matter, seeking answers to his doubts. His father was furious that his son should even entertain doubt about faith, or his 'chosen' career, but Samuel persisted, unconvinced, in the hope that his father could set his mind at peace. He failed. Butler, despite his financial dependence on his father, gave up his plans for ordination, and sought a new career. He wanted to be a painter. His father would have none of it. After much acrimonious negotiation he decided to put as much distance between himself and his family as possible, by sheep-farming in New Zealand. It had the added advantage of perhaps offering him a degree of financial independence. He set sail on 30 September 1859, taking with him Gibbon's

Samuel Butler (1835–1902), English writer, artist and satirist wrote The Way of All Flesh (1903) and earned the praise of George Bernard Shaw who deemed him "the greatest English writer of the latter half of the nineteenth century" Samuel Butler was born on 4 December 1835 at the rectory at Langar, near Bingham, Nottinghamshire, England. His mother Fanny Worsley (1808–1873), and his father, Thomas Butler (1806–1886), was rector of Langar and canon of Lincoln. Samuel was the eldest and had three siblings, Thomas, Henrietta and May. Butler would soon reject his strict and sometimes harsh Anglican upbringing, when the texts of Charles Darwin were causing so much controversy and caused the two to quarrel. Young Samuel attended his grandfather's school, Shrewsbury, then went on to the family's college, St John's in Cambridge in 1854. He had shown a great aptitude of painting and planned to become an artist against his father's wishes. A compromise was made and Butler set off for New Zealand in 1859 in hopes of making his fortune in the colonies. He claimed land which he called "Mesopotamia" at the head of the Rangitata river to become a sheep farmer on Canterbury Island, writing home often with descriptions of the various differences in cultures, the letters being published later as
