Alice Munro
Writing can often be considered a reflection. Sometimes authors resonate on certain experiences or aspects of their life, and express them through the art of writing. Alice Munro, a renowned short-story author, creatively displays this technique. It is important to first understand that Munro is a writer of fiction, yet her writing has chronologically progressed through situations and experiences in her own life. Being a Canadian native, Munro is often compared to great Southern writers such as Faulkner and OíConnor due to her ability to place her characters in confrontation with tradition. Because of her implicit style of writing, many readers can easily relate to the characters, settings, and plots of her stories. Through the use of complex characters, setting, ironic humor, and symbolism, Munro elegantly creates fictional short stories that easily survive in a non-fiction lifestyle. Munroís characters are the backbone of her stories. One could assume that Munro first creates her characters, then delicately places the plot around them.

W.O. MITCHELL
A Memorial Tribute at W.O. Mitchell Elementary School
Friday, February 27, 1998
by Hugh Mitchell
Reproduced with permission
I have always been very proud of my father. The proudest moment of my life was the day that W.O. Mitchell Elementary School was officially opened and my dad, my mom, and I were in attendance at the ceremonies. I can honestly tell you that it was my dad's proudest moment. He has received numerous awards over the last fifty years. None of them meant more to him than to have this school named in his honour. One of the reasons for that was because kids were very important to him. And so were teachers. At his very heart, he was a teacher. He loved nothing better than to entertain students and faculty and of course, he did it well.
