Sharon Butala
Sharon Butala is one of Canada's most acclaimed authors. Her first short story collection, Queen of the Headaches, was shortlisted for a Governor General's Award in 1986. Her loosely-linked trilogy of novels, The Gates of the Sun, Luna, and The Fourth Archangel, form an evocative and highly praised portrait of prairie life. Her most recent short story collection, Fever, won the 1992 Authors Awards for Paperback Fiction. Her first non-fiction work, Perfection of the Morning, was nominated for a Governor General's Award and won the Saskatchewan non-Fiction Award and The Spirit of Saskatchewan Award in 1994. She lives with her husband, Peter, near Eastend, Saskatchewan.
Nominated for a Books in Canada First Novel Award when it was first published in 1984, Country of the Heart is the resonant story of Iris and Lannie, also the heroines of Sharon Butala's newest novel, The Garden of Eden.
Country of the Heart
Sharon Butala

ISBN 0006481582
$16.00 Canadian
Set in Butala's beautifully realized prairie landscape, Country of the Heart introduces 40-year-old Iris, seemingly happily married to Barney, a rancher-turned-farmer; Jake, a widower who, despite his age, still radiates the power and passion of the legendary cowboy he once was; and Lannie, Barney's niece, the troubled young woman who has lived with Barney and Iris since her own mother died.
A story of the transforming power of love and land as only Sharon Butala can tell, Country of the Heart is a welcome addition to the hugely successful Butala backlist, a novel - because of its link to The Garden of Eden - that will gain instant recognition with Butala's fans.

Sharon Butala (Can) Has been called one of Canada's true visionaries. She has been shorlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and twice for the Governor General's Award, in both the fiction and non-fiction categories. She garnered a Canadian Authors Award for Fiction for Fever, and The Perfection of Morning won a Saskatchewan Book Award. Earlier this year, Sharon was honoured as an Officer of the Order of Canada, who praised her for giving an important voice to rural women and touching readers with her own spirituality and sense of place. Her latest works are the short-story collection Real Life and Old Man on His Back, co-authored with Courtney Milne. Real Life (Random House Canada, 2002) Publications Real Life

Sharon Butala
I've been writing for more than twenty years and have published eleven books, with two more out in 2002: my third short story collection, Real Life , and a collaboration with a photographer for a book on The Old Man On His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area, both with HarperCollins Canada. My third non-fiction book, Wild Stone Heart , (HarperCollins Canada, 2000) is now out in paperback. In 1998 I received the Marian Engel Award for a Woman Writer in Mid-Career and in 2000 I was awarded an honorary LLD from the University of Regina. Fever I have wanted to make a record of the lives of the rural agricultural people of southwestern Saskatchewan, where I have lived more than twenty-five years, and to also explain why we need to stop rural depopulation while also conserving our grassland. In 1996 my husband and I turned our ranch over to The Nature Conservancy of Canada to establish the Old Man On His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area. The spiritual sustenance to be found in nature in its undisturbed state is one of my larger themes, but my overarching theme has been and continues to be my effort to understand and to lay bare, in both fiction and non-fiction, the female soul.

Sharon and Peter Butala Sharon and Peter Butala have turned back the clock 125 years to allow a new chance for conservation of the native prairie. In 1996, they donated their 13,100-acre (5,300 ha) ranch near Eastend to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) to establish The Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage Preserve (OMB). For this initiative, they received a number of conservation awards, both federal and provincial. They came to this action though very different routes. Sharon left a career teaching at the University of Saskatchewan to move to southwest Saskatchewan when she married rancher Peter Butala in the 1970s. She began writing about the land, spirit and people of rural Saskatchewan and has produced 15 publications. Two of her best selling books, The Perfection of the Morning and Wild Stone Heart , explore her discovery of personal and cultural roots of identity in "the glowing, fragile plains, the radiant hills" of the landscape that she adopted. Sharon Butala is described as "one of the most significant Saskatchewan writers to emerge in this province since the days of Sinclair Ross and W.O. Mitchell."

Butala, Sharon (1940–)
Sharon Butala. Duane Prentice (Nomadic Visions, Victoria, B.C.) Sharon Butala was born on August 24, 1940, in Nipawin , Saskatchewan. She attended the University of Saskatchewan to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Education, and then worked as an educator of special needs teenagers in Saskatoon . In 1976 she left academia to live with her husband, Peter Butala, on a ranch near Eastend ; she also began her writing career, which focused on the character of the land and the personalities of ranchers and small-town people. Butala first wrote short stories, such as: “The Perfection of the Morning: An Apprenticeship in Nature” (1994), “Coyote’s Morning Cry: Meditations and Dreams from a Life in Nature” (1995), “Wild Stone Heart” (2000), and “Old Man on His Back” (2002). She has also written several plays including Natural Disasters A Killing Frost (1988) and Rodeo Life Although Butala found the move to her new rural home difficult at first, she eventually came to embrace the vastness of her surroundings and used it as inspiration for her writing. However, the underlying theme in all her work has been understanding and exposing the female soul. She is also active in preserving the Saskatchewan landscape: in 1996, she and her husband turned over a portion of their 13,000-acre ranch to the Nature Conservancy of Canada; this land now makes up the Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage

http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/main_beautyqueen.html
DEATH OF A BEAUTY QUEEN TIMELINE
Alexandra Wiwcharuk was born in 1939 in the town of Endeavour, Saskatchewan 330 kilometers east of Saskatoon. She was the youngest of ten children that included six brothers and three sisters in a traditional Ukrainian family.
1950's:
The Wiwcharuk family put their hopes and dreams into Alex's future. She attended high school at the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate where she was a member of the drama club. Her dream was to become a stewardess, but at a mere 5'1", she was too short. Instead, in 1959, she returned to Yorkton and, with financial help from her family, took her nurse's training at the Yorkton Union Hospital School of Nursing from which she graduated in 1961. Alex was the only one of her family to be educated beyond high school.
Pretty and vivacious, Alex was voted queen of the Kinette Skating Carnival in Yorkton in 1960 and she was Yorkton's entrant in the province-wide Saskatchewan Wheat Queen contest in 1960.
With her nursing degree in hand she began work at the City Hospital in Saskatoon in September, 1961. She shared a basement apartment in the city with three other nurses: Alice Hall, Doreen Badduke, and Pauline Tyllis.
