A Most Merry and Illustrated History William Burroughs - The Greatest Writer in the World But remember, kids, don't try this at home. (A Most Merry and Illustrated History of the Beat Generation) William Burroughs and Friend Some people say that William Burroughs was the greatest writer that ever lived. After all, here was a man who was a leader of "The Beat Generation", a friend of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, a man whose novel "Naked Lunch" helped break literature out of its traditional forms and removed the final barriers of censorship in America. Of course, others say his writing is absolute nonsense, and if there was a man who represented all that was negative and destructive of his generation, it was Bill Burroughs. Bill probably wouldn't have argued with that last assessment, but he still appreciated the acclaim his writings brought him. Today his books still sell as well as they did when they were banned, and they keep pulling in enough for publishers to keep them in print. But if anyone wants to look to the life of Bill Burroughs as a roadmap to achieving literary renown you might want to think it over before trying it out. Certainly Bill himself had second thoughts, and in his last years he was asked if he regretted anything he did. Sure, he said, everything. Bill was born in St. Louis in 1914 where his grandfather had invented the adding machine. Although the family firm ultimately developed into the megalithic Burroughs Corporation, Bill's own parents weren't really a part of it. But Bill's father did own a good chunk of the Burroughs stock and was fortunate enough sell out a month or so before the 1929 crash. The money from this, plus the income from a gift and art shop, meant Bill's background was one of high prosperity, if not fantastic wealth.

Which Is the Fly and Which Is the Human? Interview with William S. Burroughs and David Cronenberg
by Lynn Snowden Deep in Kansas, darkly dressed, William S. Burroughs, a man who shot his wife in the head and waged war against a lifetime of guilt, who has sucked up every drug imaginable and survived, and who has made a fine career out of depravity, can't on this particular afternoon take another moment of a simple midwestern housefly buzzing around his head. ``I can't stand flies,'' grumbles the seventy-seven-year-old author in that distinctively sepulchral voice, which retains a vestige of his St. Louis roots despite his many years on another planet. The fly swoops down onto Burroughs's plate of cookies. ``Terrible,'' Burroughs exclaims, exasperated, attempting to backhand the fly into oblivion. ``William, that's my pet fly!'' cries David Cronenberg, a man who may love insects but not necessarily people, the director who is perhaps best known for turning Jeff Goldblum from scientist into bug in the 1986 remake of ~The Fly~. ``Now, Julius, I told you not to bother people,'' Cronenberg commands the fly. ``Not everyone likes flies.''

The Beach Museum of Art is pleased to present this exhibition of work by Kansas photographer Jon Blumb. Well-known for his commercial photography, Blumb is especially regarded for his photographs of art objects, which can be seen in numerous exhibition catalogues and art-related publications. He is also known for his photographic documentation of grassroots and visionary art sites in Kansas and the region, particularly the Garden of Eden in Lucas, Kansas; Blumb has been active in efforts to preserve these sites. His images of these subjects represent an enormous contribution to the culture of the state.
Blumb has also produced a large body of creative photography, the subject of the present exhibition. Featured in this exhibition is William S. Speaks from Beyond the Grave
What we have here is a collection of readings from Burroughs' work, all of which were obtained from an old bootleg cassette. As far as I know these recordings are not currently commercially available, although all of them have existed on vinyl at some point, a detail evident from the odd crackle to be heard between Bill's insectoid drawling.
The tape was simply marked William Burroughs - Volume 1 , and had the pseudo catalogue number of beat-6 . It was 90 minutes long and of very poor quality. I have removed the tape hiss using Cool Edit Pro , a very useful program, although I have left the vinyl crackles and pops intact, mostly for aesthetic reasons. I was going to convert the cleaned up recording into mp3s, but a quick experiment revealed that for spoken word Real Audio is far superior, and has crunched the whole 90 minutes down to a measly 10Mb.
Well, here are the clips, in the order they appeared on the tape, but with a little more explanation in some cases:

Burroughs has been called the architect of the 1950s Beat Generation. The grandson of the inventor of the adding machine, he was born in 1914 in St. Louis, Missouri and died in 1997 in Lawrence, Kansas. He graduated from Harvard University and was living in New York when he met Allen Ginsberg , a young student at Columbia University . He served as a mentor to both Ginsberg and Kerouac. Burroughs became addicted to morphine and his first book, describes his drug experience. He came to prominence after the publication of Naked Lunch , in 1959, which took addiction beyond the realm of drugs to describe it as a general and social condition. Naked Lunch joined Kerouac's On the Road and Ginsberg's Howl

William S. Burroughs dies at 83; Beat Generation godfather
By TONY PERRY
(c) 1997, Los Angeles Times
William S. Burroughs, whose ragged, scatalogical, experimental prose made him a seminal figure of the Beat Generation and later a guru to the hippie and punk rock movements, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 1997, at age 83. Burroughs died in Lawrence, Kan., about 24 hours after suffering a heart attack, said his longtime publicist, Ira Silverberg. Although in failing health, Burroughs had recently performed in a video with the rock band U2 and read from his work to musical settings by the rap group Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. He had also been working with Silverberg on a new edition of his selected works. Along with Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, Burroughs helped found the Beat Generation literary movement with its frank descriptions of drug addiction, sexual excess and petty criminality. The three shared a New York apartment in 1945, with Burroughs, the eldest of the three, acting the role of literary inspiration and guide to the lowlife haunts of the big city. The impact that the uppercrust WASP had on the Jewish youth from New Jersey and the working class Irish-Catholic from Massachusetts was to change American letters irrevocably. "Burroughs had conducted lay analytical sessions with his junior partners, and had introduced them to the esoteric in literature and the exotic in street life," wrote Oliver Harris, in the introduction to his collection of Burroughs' letters.

WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS
"In the U.S. you have to be a deviant or die of boredom." "He was an exterminator in Chicago, a bartender in New York, a summons-server in Newark. In Paris he sat at café tables, watching the sullen French faces go by. In Athens he looked up from his ouzo at what he called the ugliest people in the world. In Istanbul he threaded his way through crowds of opium addicts and rug-sellers, looking for the facts. In English hotels he read Spengler and the Marquis de Sade." -Jack Kerouac (from On the Road) I'm a big William Burroughs fan. Burroughs was the quintessential anti-hero of the so called Beat Generation. Older than his two more famous counterparts Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg, Burroughs was a mentor to both men. His most famous work is undoubtedly Naked Lunch . It's a cult classic. Read it if you dare. Burroughs was a lifelong heroin user and an unrepentant dope fiend. He wrote about his addiction in a book called Junky where he describes in detail the junky lifestyle as he lived it in the New York City of the 1940's. Burroughs' dry humor and biting sarcasm are his trademarks. He is part mid-western gentleman, part gun toting madman, and part social commentator.

Tras un periodo terriblemente autodestructivo durante los a±os 50 tras una primeriza incursi³n en la literatura pulp (es el caso de Yonqui ), se dedic³ a partir de los 60 a escribir con bastante continuidad. In view of the fact that my articles and statements on Scientology may have influenced young people to associate themselves with the so called Church of Scientology, I feel an obligation to make my present views on the subject quite clear. Some of the techniques are highly valuable and warrant further study and experimentation. The E Meter is a useful device ... (many variations of this instrument are possible). On the other hand I am in flat disagreement with the organizational policy. No body of knowledge needs an organizational policy. Organizational policy can only impede the advancement of knowledge. There is a basic incompatibility between any organization and freedom of thought. Suppose Newton had founded a Church of Newtonian Physics and refused to show his formula to anyone who doubted the tenets of Newtonian Physics? All organizations create organizational necessities. It is precisely organizational necessities that have prevented Scientology from obtaining the serious consideration merited by the importance of Mr. Hubbard's discoveries. Scientologists are not prepared to accept intelligent and sometimes critical evaluation. They demand unquestioning acceptance. Mr. Hubbard's overtly fascist utterances (China is the real threat to world peace, Scientology is protecting the home, the church, the family, decent morals ... positively no wife swapping. It's a dirty Communist trick ... national boundaries, the concepts of RIGHT and WRONG against evil free thinking psychiatrist) can hardly recommend him to the militant students. Certainly it is time for the Scientologists to come out in plain English on one side or the other, if they expect the trust and support of young people. Which side are you on Hubbard, which side are you on?
