US author. One of the most culturally influential post-war writers, his work is noted for its experimental methods, black humour, explicit homo-eroticism, and apocalyptic vision. In 1944 he met Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, all three becoming leading members of the Beat Generation . His first novel, Junkie (1953), documented his heroin addiction and expatriation to Mexico, where in 1951 he accidentally killed his common-law wife. He settled in Tangier in 1954 and wrote his celebrated anti-novel Naked Lunch (1959). A landmark federal court case deemed Naked Lunch The Soft Machine The Ticket That Exploded (1962), and Nova Express (1964). For these books he would literally cut up, reposition and paste in pieces of narrative from various sources, in order to see what kind of creative results they generated. Later, more conventionally written novels, include

Corso: What is your department? Burroughs: Kunst unt Wissenschaft Corso: What say you about political conflicts? Burroughs: Political conflicts are merely surfaced manifestations. If conflicts arise you may certain powers intend to keep this conflict under operation since they hope to profit from the situation. To concern yourself with surface political conflicts is to make the mistake of the bull in the ring, you are charging the cloth. That is what politics is for, to teach you the cloth. Just as the bullfighter teaches the bull, teaches him to follow, obey the cloth. Corso: Who manipulates the cloth? Burroughs: Death Ginsberg: What is death? Burroughs: A gimmick. It's the time birth death gimmick. Can't go on much longer, too many people are wising up. Corso: Do you feel there has been a definite change in man's makeup? A new consciousness?

William Burroughs Junky
From double book to stand alone; from Ace Original to Penguin Modern Classic; from unredeemed confession to cult novel; from a cheap shocker to a refined taste - the history of this text in a strange way acts as an allegory of the way the heroin subculture Burroughs depicted has mutated, spread, and engrafted itself with the corpus of the wider society, in the process irretrievably altering that upon which it parasitises. Just as - if you turn to his glossary - you will see how many arcane drug terms have metastasised into the vigorous language. Today junk is everywhere, on housing estates and in penthouses; sniffed, smoked and shot up by models and model makers alike. Heroin chic has been and gone as a stylistic affectation - and will doubtless return again. Countless books and films have been predicated on the use and abuse of the drug. The heroin addict has become a stock figure in soap operas. Conservative estimates of the numbers of heroin addicts in Britain indicate a thousandfold increase in the past half century. Certainly, Burroughs himself viewed the postwar era as a Gotterdammerung and a convulsive reevaluation of all values. With his anomic inclinations and his Mandarin intellect, Burroughs was in a paradoxical position vis a vis the coming cultural revolution of the 1960s. An open homosexual and a drug addict, his quintessentially Midwestern libertarianism led him to eschew any command economy of ethics, while his personal inclinations meant he had to travel with distastefully socialist and liberal fellows. For Burroughs, the reevaluation was both discount and markup, and perhaps it was this that made him such a great avatar of the emergent counterculture.

      WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS PAPERS, WSB97:
      GUIDE AND INVENTORY
      SPEC.CMS.87
(Compiled by John M. Bennett, May 1999)
This collection of papers, books, serials, and other materials, designated WSB97, was given to OSU in 1997 by the Estate of William S. Burroughs (James W. Grauerholz, Executor). Throughout this Guide, "WSB" refers to William S. Burroughs, and "JWG" refers to James W. Grauerholz. WSB's son, William S. Burroughs, Jr., is referred to as "William S. Burroughs, Jr.''
      INTRODUCTION
This collection of materials, originally gathered by James W. Grauerholz, William S. Burroughs' assistant and editor, includes drafts and editorial materials for many of WSB's publications; copies of many of those and other WSB publications; correspondence, fan mail, and printed matter received from the mid-1970's through the early 1980's; books, chapbooks, and magazines received or acquired during the same period; Burroughs Communications business, travel, and tour files from that period, including letters and cards from WSB and texts of WSB's interviews; photocopies of some of WSB's early correspondence with Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and others; clippings and reviews regarding WSB's books from the early 1980's; and much other material. In addition to providing source material for the study of WSB's life and works, this collection provides a wealth of information about the avant garde literary, art, and music worlds of the 1970's and 1980's, primarily in North America, but also in Europe and elsewhere. There is abundant correspondence, manuscript, and published material from a wide variety of writers and other artists, both contemporaries of WSB and younger artists and writers. Many of the latter are also represented in OSU's Avant Writing Collection.
