Timeline Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a prosperous family. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran. To glamourize his own origins, Burroughs has claimed that he was born in Peking at the time that his father was military advicer to the Empress of China, and lived there, in the Forbidden City, until Burroughs was ten years old. Attended the Michigan Military Academy. Later was an instructor at same school (1895-96) Edgar Rice Burroughs married Emma Centennia Hulbert (divorced in 1934); they had two sons and one daughter). Burroughs founded his own publishing house Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. The first Tarzan film was produced. Burroughs purchased a large ranch in the San Fernando Valley, which he later developed into the suburb of Tarzana. To pay for his expensive lifestyle and to cover his misadventures in financial investments he wrote an average of three novels a year. Burroughs was elected mayor of California Beach.

The Gods of Mars
by Edgar Rice Burroughs The Gods of Mars is a 1918 Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the second of his famous Barsoom series. It can be said that the novel set the tone for much science fiction to come. Its influence can clearly be seen in franchises such as Star Trek and Farscape. While Burroughs no doubt borrowed liberally from the pulp fiction of his day, particularly westerns and swashbuckling tales, the pacing and themes set the tone for the soft science fiction genre. The protagonist, John Carter, with his proficiency in hand-to-hand combat and flirtations with beautiful alien women, could be said to have set the mold for later influential icons like Captain James T. Kirk and James Bond. At the end of the first book, A Princess of Mars , John Carter is unwillingly transported back to Earth. The Gods of Mars begins with his arrival back on Barsoom (Mars) after a ten year hiatus, separated from his wife Dejah Thoris, his unborn child, and the Red Martian people of the nation of Helium, whom he has adopted as his own. Unfortunately, John Carter materializes in the one place on Barsoom from which nobody is allowed to depart: the Valley Dor, which is the Barsoomian heaven. (Summary from wikipedia)

To Guide Entry
Edgar Rice Burroughs remains one of the most commercially successful writers of the adventure-romance story in twentieth century America. Burroughs wrote some seventy books whose sales now total over one hundred million copies—no small achievement in literary history. Burroughs’ talent in creating such memorable characters as Tarzan and John Carter has created a legacy of adventure fiction that has remained long after his death, and readers of the twenty-first century and beyond will doubtless marvel at these same characters. Aside from these memorable characterizations, Burroughs possessed a remarkable genius in creating totally imaginable environments and societies that included the dark jungles of Africa, the Martian landscape, and a point somewhere beneath the Earth’s crust. Burroughs’ successful commercialization, his seemingly timeless appeal to an excitement-oriented reading public, and his adroitness in creating memorable characters should come as no surprise to fans and foes alike, since the author really just follows a formula that has its roots in the epic tradition. ERB, as his legions of admirers refer to him, merely creates a hero, plunges this hero into a conflict of unknown proportions with antagonists of strange and unworldly description, and adds a love interest for his hero to further substantiate the notion of quest which is so prevalent and central to the epic tradition. It is a formula that has worked for nearly two thousand years and ERB merely repeated it over and over again, thereby distinguishing his career as a master storyteller with a collection of novels that highlighted the same heroes in a number of stories.

Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Edgar Rice Burroughs is a pulp fantasy writer best known for his Tarzan and John Carter on Mars serials. His works contain incredible coincidences, wooden characters, bad science, too many nested flash backs, and excessively virtuous Americans fighting excessively evil whatever. But, he also incorporated and extended contemporary legends such as a hollow earth, canals on Mars, Jungles on Venus, and so on, into his stories. In the process, he further popularized them in American culture. His works also reveal a dark side to ERB's personality, in that they became pessimistic as the carnage of WWII made ERB's worst evil dictators look insignificant. This is most obvious in the later Pellucidar novels. Mike Sofka

This page was created to keep alive the links which were previously found on the http://www.tarzan.com/ Web site. Originally a fan site, Tarzan.com was taken over by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. in 1998. Not all the links found on that page will be here. Some of the sites have disappeared, but some of them did not interest me and I suspect they are to be found elsewhere in online ERB fandom. So I've decided to concentrate on the sites I think are the most interesting, and there are many links here I found on my own.

Burroughs, Edgar Rice Biography
Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) American novelist, creator of the world famous character of Tarzan, one of the indispensable icons of popular culture. Burroughs also published science fiction and crime novels, some 26 books dealt with the Apeman. Critics have considered Burroughs's fiction often crudely written and chauvinist. His books, however, are still widely read and usually more interesting than the films. It is true that Burroughs often portrayed Africans, Arabs or Asians as evil or comic, but the stories also contain several elements that have kept them 'politically correct': Waziri warriors are brave, and his cave girls Nadara and Dejah Thoris, the princesses of Mars, are courageous and resourceful characters. "As the body rolled to the ground Tarzan of the Apes placed his foot upon the neck of his lifelong enemy, and raising his eyes to the full moon threw back his fierce young head and voiced the wild and terrible cry of his people." (from Tarzan of the Apes Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a prosperous family. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran. To glamourize his own origins, Burroughs has claimed that he was born in Peking at the time that his father was military advicer to the Empress of China, and lived there, in the Forbidden City, until Burroughs was ten years old. Burroughs attended several private schools, including the Michigan Military Academy, Orchar Lake (1892-95), where he was instructor and assistant commandant (1895-96). He served in the 7th Cavalry in the Arizona Territory (1896-97) and Illinois Reserve Militia (1918-19). During this period he met and heard stories of men who had fought the Sioux and Apache. After his military career Burroughs was owner of a stationery store in Pocatello, Idaho (1898), had dealings with the American Battery Company, Chicago (1899-03). In 1900 he married Emma Centennia Hulbert (divorced in 1934); they had two sons and one daughter).

Burroughs, Edgar Rice (1875-1950)
American popular fiction writer, best remembered as the creator of Tarzan of the Apes (1914), a series which eventually ran to 25 books and 25,000,000 copies worldwide. Burroughs' first published piece "Under the Moon of Mars," first appeared in the adventure magazine All-Story (1911), and led to him writing a series of adventure stories set on Mars (known to its natives as "Barsoom"). Published between 1917 and 1948, these ten novels, among the best of which were A Princess of Mars The Chessmen of Mars (1922), and Swords of Mars (1936), saw hero John Carter encountering a variety of alien-looking but human-acting creatures on a world extrapolated from the Mars of Percival Lowell . In A Princess of Mars , Burroughs used Schiaparelli 's names for regions on Mars and gave his Martians green skin.
AlThough lightweight in content and superficial in their portrayal of alien life and intelligence, Burroughs' Mars novels nevertheless had a lasting effect on those who read them in their formative years, including, by their own acknowledgment, Ronald Bracewell , Ray Bradbury , Arthur C.
