Robert Burns
Robert Burns
Poet and writer. Born in Alloway in South Ayrshire, the eldest of seven children. Although portraying himself as a simple ploughman, Burns was actually a bright, well-read and cosmopolitan tenant farmer, with quite an eye for the ladies. Burns went to live at Lochlie Farm near Tarbolton and then Mossgiel Farm near Mauchline, before moving to Dumfries in failing health (1791). He regularly visited Edinburgh, becoming a popular society figure. In 1788 he married Jean Armour, and went on to father nine children by her. He is known to have taken several other lovers. Amongst many other works he wrote the poems Tam O'Shanter To a mouse and the songs My Love is like a Red, Red Rose and Auld Lang Syne , the latter now sung world-wide at the end of functions and particularly just before midnight at the end of the old year. The first edition of Burns' poems was printed and published in Kilmarnock, commemorated by a statue in the town centre. Burns died in Dumfries and is buried in St. Michael's Churchyard. Scots, and those of Scottish descent, celebrate his memory on

The best laid schemes of mice and men Meaning The most carefully prepared plans may go wrong. Origin From Robert Burns' poem To a Mouse , 1786. It tells of how he, while ploughing a field, upturned a mouse's nest. The resulting poem is an apology to the mouse:
But, Mousie, thou art no thy lane
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes o' mice an' men
Gang aft a-gley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promised joy.

Jobs, Discontent, and Beauty
by Ellen Reiss
about Robert Burns
What the Discontent Is About
People's discontent about work includes, along with the sheer pain of not making enough money, a terrific anger at being seen with contempt. People hate being seen as mechanisms to squeeze as much profit as possible from and to eliminate if the squeezing doesn't fare so well. There is this feeling across America, "I am more than that, for God's sake! A human being is more than that!"
How Should Work Be?
I comment on two poems of Robert Burns that are a means of asking, How should jobs and work be in this land? "Man Was Made to Mourn" has the famous great and aching statement "Man's inhumanity to man / Makes countless thousands mourn!" And it has these lines: See yonder poor, o'er labour'd wight,
So abject, mean, and vile

ROBERT BURNS, FREEMASON
Without doubt, Scotland's most famous Freemason was the country's national Bard, Brother Robert Burns.
Burns was born in 1759 and died at the early age of just 37 in 1796, but few outside the Craft are aware that many of his poems were based on, or revolved around Freemasonry. On July 4, 1781, at the age of 23, Robert Burns was initiated as an Entered Apprentice into Lodge St. David Tarbolton 174 just over a week after the amalgamation of Lodge St. David Tarbolton 174 and Lodge St. James Tarbolton 178. On October 1, 1781 Brother Robert Burns was passed as a Fellow of the Craft and then raised as a Master Mason. Lodge St David Tarbolton eventually closed and was replaced by Lodge St. James (Kilwinning) Tarbolton 135. On July 27, 1784, Brother Robert Burns was elected as Depute Master of St James (Kilwinning) Tarbolton, which at that time met in the Cross Keys public house, a position he held for four years. Many of the lodge records, in the Bard's own handwriting still exist, and Brother Robert Burns was a frequent visitor to lodges in Irvine, Dumfries and Edinburgh over the ensuing years.
In the museum in the Grand Lodge of Scotland hangs a very large painting by Brother Stewart Watson which depicts Brother Robert Burns being inaugurated as Poet Laureate of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning in Edinburgh on March 1, 1787.

Rabbie Burns Rabbie Burns is Scotland's national poet. World famous as the writer of Auld Lang Syne . Burns had an affinity for words, women, wine and the haggis! This page in our web site is dedicated to the Bard, his poems, songs, and his life. We plan to make available a download every month of one of his favorite works, (which we will regularly update), as well as providing you with links to Burns related web sites , information about Burns events, and general Burns memorabilia. This month we have two of Burn's most famous writings. The poem " Holy Willies Prayer " revealing in light hearted but equally ruthless manner, the hypocrisies of religious belief in his day. This is tempered later by the song " Corn Fields are Bonie " a treasured testament to the joy of love. [ The graphic below depicts the opening and closing stanza of Burns' "Address to a Haggis". First printed in the Caledonian Mercury 19 th December 1786 – a few short months before the earliest published recipe for Haggis appeared in "Cookery and Pastry" by Susanna MacIver. Robert Burns Lindsay
Robert Burns Lindsay was born on July 4, 1824, in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He was the only foreign-born citizen to serve as a governor of Alabama, a situation made possible by the 1868 constitution. Lindsay was educated in Scotland at parochial schools and the University of St. Andrews. In 1844 he came to America to visit his brother David in North Carolina. Robert remained in North Carolina where he studied law and taught school. He moved to Tuscumbia, Alabama, in 1849 where he continued teaching until 1852 when he was admitted to the bar and began a law practice. Lindsay was elected to represent Franklin County in the state legislature in 1853. In 1857 he was elected to the state senate. He was a presidential elector to the 1860 Democratic convention and chose to support Douglas when the party split. Lindsay opposed secession but served in Roddy's cavalry during part of the Civil War. In 1865 he returned to the state senate. In the governor's race of 1870, Lindsay narrowly defeated the incumbent Republican governor, William H. Smith. Smith at first refused to concede the office to Lindsay, claiming he was fraudulently elected, until forced to do so by a court order. During Lindsay's administration the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) was established to provide education in agriculture and mechanical arts. The cities of Gadsden and Birmingham were incorporated in 1871.
