Burnett's life

The Secret Garden
Burnett's Life and Work Burnett's life follows the course of her most successful children's novels: she was born to comfort, reduced to (near-)poverty, then restored to wealth in adulthood. She was the middle of five children of a well-off family in Manchester, England. When she was four, her father died suddenly, reducing the family's circumstances considerably. Her mother maintained the family business for 10 years but the family moved increasingly into the ranks of the shabby genteel. With the support of an American uncle, the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1865; however, the new start does not appear to have reversed the family fortunes.
Like Alcott , Burnett felt responsible for relieving her family’s financial condition and tried teaching and raising geese before selling two stories for $35 to Godey’s Lady’s Book in 1868, at age 19 (Bixler). She was soon selling regularly to various magazines, and became a successful novelist 10 years later. Her current reputation rests almost completely on three children's books: Little Lord Fauntleroy A Little Princess (1905 though she wrote two earlier versions, the novel

Authors Frances Hodgson Burnett Frances Hodgson Burnett Part of a photograph by Herbert Rose Barraud FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT (1849-1924) grew up in Manchester until, in 1865, her widowed mother was forced to take her children to Tennessee, the home of Frances's uncle. She married Swan Burnett in 1873, was the family breadwinner (her first short story was published in the late 1860s) and had two sons. After her divorce she was briefly married to her lover: her personal life was unhappy, but she had numerous friends on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1877 the Boston Transcript compared her first novel to the best of George Eliot and in 1886 Little Lord Fauntleroy was a huge popular success; from then on Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote for both children and adults.

INTRODUCTION called "magic" by Colin is the power to transform lives. While The Secret Garden is an exquisite children's story, its timeless themes, precisely drawn characters, and taut narrative make it worthy of the serious discussion due any classic novel. It is a tale of redemption, rich with biblical symbolism and mythical associations. In Mr. Craven, his stern brother, and Mary's parents, readers have found evidence of a fallen adult world. Consequently, Mary and Colin are physically and spiritually malnourished, and, in the words of Burnett, down-right rude. Mr. Craven's redemption at the hands of Colin and his niece ensures the return of good rule to the ancient, gloomy house and of health to the children. Dickon constantly surrounded by fox, lamb, and bird
