She emigrated to Knoxville, Tennessee in the United States in . The move, which they made at the request of an uncle, made no difference to the family's poverty, but at least they were now living in a better environment. Following the death of her mother in , an 18-year-old Frances was now the head of a family of four younger siblings. She turned to writing to support them all, with a first story published in Godey's Lady's Book in 1868. FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT
English author (1849-1924)
Biography:
Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in Manchester in 1849. Some years after his farther's death, all her family moved to United States.
Her reputation as a novelist was made with her story of Lancashire life, That Lass o' Lowrie's (published in 1877), Burnett's first novel, which had been serialized in Scribner 's. The book already showed her talent to portray realistic working-class scenes, mixed with a romantic and most improvable plot. Later on, she had other novels published, like Haworth's Louisiana A Fair Barbarian (1881), and Through One Administration (1883), as well as a play, Esmeralda
But all these books were not to be her most successful work. In 1886, she published Little Lord Fauntleroy , a children's book which fascinated mothers, for they began dressing their sons in velvet suit with lace collar, like the main character of this book.
Her later books include Sara Crew (1888), later rewritten as A Little Princess for drama, and her marvelous Secret Garden (1909). Both were children's books, and thanks to them, Burnett is quite well-known now-a-days.

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) , English author and playwright wrote The Secret Garden “If tha’ goes round that way tha’ll come to th’ gardens,” she said, pointing to a gate in a wall of shrubbery. “There’s lots o’ flowers in summer-time, but there’s nothin’ bloomin’ now.” She seemed to hesitate a second before she added, “One of th’ gardens is locked up. No one has been in it for ten years.” “Why?” asked Mary in spite of herself. Here was another locked door added to the hundred in the strange house. Mary Lennox starts out as a spoiled, self-centred child. When she finds the key to a secret garden she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and helps many others including her sickly cousin Colin open the door to happiness. While it was initially written for children The Secret Garden was soon being read by an audience of all ages in North America and Europe. During her lifetime Burnett was a financially successful writer, often supporting the rest of her family with her earnings. Not an easy task when Victorian values looked down on a woman who sought independence in a realm dominated by men. Many female writers of the time including

Biography
Frances Hodgson Burnett was born at Cheetham Hill, Manchester on November 24, 1849. Four years after her birth, her father died, leaving her mother with five children and little money. Her mother carried on the family business, running a wholesale firm that supplied art materials to wealthy manufacturers. Her efforts failed in part due to the effects of the American Civil War. Though this, Frances seemed to have been happy and had a fertile imagination. She wrote her first poem at the age of 7 and began writing melodramatic novelettes. In 1864 the family Mrs. Hodgson was forces to sell the store and the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee after receiving a letter from her brother (Carpenter, 1990; Laski, 1950).
The family situation did not improve. Frances decided to send a story to an editor. Her paper and postage-stamps for the venture had to be earned by picking and selling wild grapes. In 1868, at the age of 18, her first stories were published in Godey's Lady's Book Hearts and Diamonds and Miss Caruther's Engagement.

Frances Hodgson Burnett
Frances Hodgson Burnett, Anglo-American novelist, was born Frances Eliza Hodgson in Manchester, England, on the 24th of November 1849. In 1865 she went to America with her parents, who settled in Knoxville, Tennessee. Miss Hodgson soon began to write stories for magazines. In 1873 she married Dr L. M. Burnett of Washington, whom she afterwards (1898) divorced. Her reputation as a novelist was made by her remarkable tale of Lancashire life, That Lass o’ Lowrie’s (1877), and a number of other volumes followed, of which the best were Through one Administration (1883) and A Lady of Quality (1896). In 1886 she attained a new popularity by her charming story of Little Lord Fauntleroy , and this led to other stories for children. Little Lord Fauntleroy was dramatized and had a great success on the stage; and other dramas by her were also produced. In 1900 she married a second time, her husband being Mr. Stephen Townesend, a surgeon, who (as Will Dennis) had taken to the stage and had collaborated with her in some of her plays. Burnett's plays include Esmeralda (1881), which she wrote with the American playwright William H. Gillette. She considered

Frances Hodgson Burnett biography
Biography of Frances Hodgson Burnett, a nineteenth century dialect story writer.
Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett was born on November 24, 1849 at Manchester, England. Her father died in 1865 and the family moved to America, settling in Newmarket, Tennessee. There the family that consisted of mother, two sons, and three daughters sought to make a living on a little farm. There were many trying times, but they all worked together bravely. Frances felt that she had the ability to write and felt that she could earn money from it. She began with short stories which were published in Peterson’s Magazine and Godey’s Lady’s Book, but she didn’t receive marked success or recognition until she was published the dialect story “Surly Tim’s Trouble” in Scribner’s Magazine in 1872. Her girlhood days in Manchester had made her familiar with the Lancashire dialect and she turned to that knowledge to write the story. This launched her career and afterwards she was sought after by publishers. In 1875 Frances married Dr. Swan M. Burnett and traveled extensively throughout Europe. When they finished traveling they took up residence in Washington.
