JAMES "JIMMY THE GENT" BURKE
James Burke was portrayed by Robert DeNiro in the movie Goodfellas.
Profile/bio first appeared on the Alleged-Mafia-Site and is written by Shannon Dougherty
By the early 1970s Burke was a loanshark, thief, counterfeiter and fence man. He also held, in secret, a partnership in the notorious "Roberts Lounge" bar which was located in Ozone Park, Queens. Roberts Lounge was frequented by much of New York City's underworld. It also boasted a big bookmaking operation that Burke controlled. By the mid-1970s Burked was convicted, along with Henry Hill, for a loansharking and assault charge. He was given over 5 years and sent to Atlanta Federal Prison. His cellmate was Steven "Stacks" Edwards who was an African-American hoodlum that specialized in credit card fraud. Edwards was also a longtime Roberts Lounge patron. Then when Edwards was paroled, Thomas "Two Gun Tommy" DeSimone was his new cell mate. DeSimone had botched a hijacking attempt and was sent to Atlanta.
The gang would consist of criminals such as Edwards, DeSimone, Krugman, Angelo Sepe, Robert "Frenchie" McMahon, Richard Eaton, Pietro Licristo and a believed Lucchese soldier. Edwards responsible for picking up an additional gateway van. By 1:00 a.m., December 11, 1978, DeSimone and Burke had left the halfway house. When they arrived at the airport, DeSimone proved unreliable and only one van was available. The reason for two vans was because it was believed that $20 million was waiting for them behind Building 261. After they rounded up the Lufthansa heist, the gang began to pillage and take what they could. In the end $6 million in U.S. dollars and an additional $4 million in other currency and jewelry. Very little of it was ever recovered.

, Powells.com One of only two authors to win two Edgar Awards James Lee Burke has been called "the Faulkner of crime fiction." Now, many readers are saying that Purple Cane Road , the eleventh installment of his long-running series about Louisiana cop Dave Robicheaux, is Burke's best book yet. When a pimp tells Robicheaux that his mother spent her last days whoring in New Orleans and was drowned by cops working for the mob, Dave admits, "My mother's memory, the sad respect I always had for her, had been stolen from me." The pimp is soon murdered, but Robicheaux's search for the truth about his mother's violent end has only just begun. Burke's career has seen its ups and downs. First published at age nineteen, by the time he was thirty-four he had four novels under his belt. But then, suddenly, publishers wanted nothing to do with him - yet, the novel they rejected for nine years

    James Burke
The Deaf ’Un James (“Deaf”) Burke was the first British champion to fight on American soil. He was also the most active champion of his day, fighting twenty bouts, some of grueling duration. Burke learned to box while working as a waterman on the Thames River. An older boxer gave Burke instruction and put him in the ring against Ned Murphy in 1828. The two battled for 50 rounds, until the match was called a draw because of darkness. Burke fought more marathon bouts in the next few years, including a three-hour victory over Bill Fitzmaurice and a two-hour-and-fifty-minute loss to Bill Cousens. Burke was unsuccessful in attempts to be matched against champion Jem Ward, but when Ward retired, Burke fought Harry Macone for the title. In a brutal match, Burke triumphed in 59 rounds. The next year, Burke battled challenger Simon Byrne. By the nineteenth round, Burke was on the ground and his ear had been bitten through. The two men fought doggedly for more than three hours, however. Burke finally tapped an exhausted Byrne to the ground in the 99th round. Byrne died three days after the fight. Burke was not blamed, but he avoided competitions and fought only exhibitions for a time. The Irish champion Sam O’Rourke challenged Burke for the title, but Burke declined when O’Rourke insisted that the fight be held in Ireland. O’Rourke then traveled to America, where he constantly denigrated Burke’s abilities and courage. On hearing of the insults, Burke decided to meet his challenger in New Orleans in 1836. In the first round, Burke threw O’Rourke to the ground with a cross-buttock hold. In the next round, one of O’Rourke’s seconds threw Burke into O’Rourke’s grasp. By the third round, the fight had degenerated into a violent free-for-all. The crowd surged into the ring, and Burke was forced to flee the scene on horseback in fear for his life.
