CHAPTER 1 Document 2 Edmund Burke, Speech on Conciliation with the Colonies
22 Mar. 1775 Works 1:46471 In this character of the Americans, a love of freedom is the predominating feature which marks and distinguishes the whole: and as an ardent is always a jealous affection, your colonies become suspicious, restive, and untractable, whenever they see the least attempt to wrest from them by force, or shuffle from them by chicane, what they think the only advantage worth living for. This fierce spirit of liberty is stronger in the English colonies probably than in any other people of the earth; and this from a great variety of powerful causes; which, to understand the true temper of their minds, and the direction which this spirit takes, it will not be amiss to lay open somewhat more largely. They were further confirmed in this pleasing error by the form of their provincial legislative assemblies. Their governments are popular in a high degree; some are merely popular; in all, the popular representative is the most weighty; and this share of the people in their ordinary government never fails to inspire them with lofty sentiments, and with a strong aversion from whatever tends to deprive them of their chief importance. to obedience, and the penalties of rebellion. All this is mighty well. But my honourable and learned friend on the floor, who condescends to mark what I say for animadversion, will disdain that ground. He has heard, as well as I, that when great honours and great emoluments do not win over this knowledge to the service of the state, it is a formidable adversary to government. If the spirit be not tamed and broken by these happy methods, it is stubborn and litigious.

The Liberalism/Conservatism
Of Edmund Burke and F. A. Hayek:
A Critical Comparison
Linda C. Raeder
[From HUMANITAS National Humanities Institute , Washington, DC USA] Edmund Burke, the passionate defender of the "ancient principles" of his forebears, might be surprised to discover that he originated a new school of political thought. By all accounts, however, he is the "modern founder of political conservatism," and generations of ‘conservative’ thinkers have found his life and work a rich source of philosophical and practical wisdom. Burke, of course, was a statesman and not a political philosopher, and he never produced anything that may be regarded as a systematic political treatise. Nevertheless, he embraced a consistent political creed that governed his actions throughout his life. The thesis of this essay is that Burke’s implicit political creed is, in all essential respects, the doctrine articulated by the twentieth-century social philosopher F. A. Hayek. Hayek’s aim, he said, was to "restate" or systematize those basic principles whose observance generated and sustain Western constitutional government and the free society. The "classical liberal" principles articulated by Hayek were also those that inspired and guided Burke.

A. A Pervasive concern for future generations - Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine
One interesting way to gauge the prevalence of the intergenerational mindset during the late 18th century is to study the arguments put forth by commentators of the day on a prominent issue such as the French Revolution. Both the proponents and the detractors of that revolution chose to frame their arguments in terms of generational rights. In his popular Reflections on the Revolution in France , Edmund Burke decried France's departure from monarchy on generational entitlement grounds. In a famously eloquent passage, he describes society as a sacred partnership: ". . . a partnership not only between those who are living, but between those who are living, those who are dead, and those who are to be born. Each contract of each particular state is but a clause in the great primeval contract of eternal society." Later in the same piece, Burke would phrase his concerns in the language of estate preservation, a language with surprisingly modern environmental overtones:

THE CONSERVATISM OF DOUBT
My favorite conservative thinkers were outsiders. Edmund Burke was an Irishman with a Catholic mother. Alexander Hamilton was born a bastard. Disraeli was a Jew. Adam Smith was a Scot at a time (Has that time passed, even now?) when Englishmen regarded the Scots with amusement or contempt. In short, while these political theorists supported order, hierarchy and private property, they were never entirely accepted by the ruling classes of their day. Given my partiality to mavericks, it’s not surprising that I’m a great fan of Andrew Sullivan. British by birth, American by adoption, Catholic by upbringing, conservative by temperament, and homosexual by nature, Andrew is in a class by himself, which is one reason why he’s one of the most original and insightful commentators on the American political scene today. Andrew’s blog, The Daily Dish , can be accessed at http://time.blogs.com/daily_dish/ . But right now I want to talk about his new book, The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It; How to Get It Back (HarperCollins, 286 pp, $29.95).

Edmund Burke (1729-1797)
Edmund Burke was born on 1 January 1729 (Old Style; 12 January New Style). His stated birthplace is Dublin although there is a strong tradition in County Cork that Burke was actually born at Ballywater, Shanballymore (Connor Cruise O'Brien, The Great Melody, 1992). Although his mother, Mary Nagle, was a Catholic and his father, Richard - a solicitor - had converted to Anglicanism, Burke was educated from 1741 at Abraham Shackleton's Quaker boarding school in Ballitore, Co. Kildare. Edmund Burke was brought up as an Anglican in order that he would not be limited by the Williamite Penal Laws against Catholics. In 1744 Burke successfully sat the entrance examinations for Trinity College, Dublin. He took his final examinations in 1748 and in 1750 he embarked on his legal training at the Middle Temple in London but appears to have lost interest in the Law as a career. He left England and spent some time wandering around England and France. He then took up a career in writing. His early publications include

Titled The Conservative Bookshelf: Essential Works That Impact Today’s Conservative Thinkers it amounts to my own personal canon in respect of conservative literature—which explains why I found the publisher’s offer irresistible. The Starfish project To love the little platoon we belong to in society, is the first principle (the germ as it were) of public affections. Reflections on the Revolution in France Edmund Burke (1729-1797), was one of the first writers to realise the importance of the spontaneous social groupings that people create for themselves as bulwarks defending civil society against despots and revolutionaries. For more on Edmund Burke click here Social scientists increasingly recognise that Burke's little platoons are more than a defence against revolution, they are the glue that holds society together and makes it tolerable. However pessimists fear that they are breaking down. They worry that the market, the nuclear family, increasing self-centredness, or whatever, are all destroying civil society. iGreens are more optimistic. We believe that the modern welfare state, which takes on the jobs that would have fallen to the little platoons, is the biggest danger to civil society. Unfortunately for the recipients of state welfare it does the jobs less well. It replaces private and charitable institutions with politically correct social workers, an education system that can't or won't teach the three R's, and a crumbling monolithic NHS run largely for the convenience of its own staff.

Biographical note
Statesman, orator, and political philosopher, was the son of an attorney in Dublin, where he was born His father was a Protestant, but his mother, whose maiden name was Nagle, was a Roman Catholic. He received his early ed. at a Quaker school at Ballitore, and in 1743 proceeded to Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1748. His father wished him to study for the law, and with this object he, in 1750, went to London and entered the Middle Temple. He, however, disliked law and spent more time in literary pursuits than in legal study. In 1756 his first published work appeared, A Vindication of Natural Society On the Sublime and Beautiful , which attracted universal attention, and three years later (1759) he projected with Dodsley the publisher The Annual Register , for which he continued to write the yearly Survey of Events until 1788. About the same time he was introduced to W.G. Hamilton (known as Single-speech H.) then about to go to Ireland as Chief Sec., and accompanied him in the capacity of private secretary, in which he remained for three years. In 1765 he became private secretary to the Marquis of Rockingham, the Whig statesman, then Prime Minister, who became his fast friend until his death. At the same time he entered Parliament as member for Wendover, and began his brilliant career as an orator and philosophic statesman. The first great subject in which he interested himself was the controversy with the American colonies, which soon developed into war and ultimate separation, and in 1769 he published, in reply to G. Grenville, his pamphlet on

The Edmund Burke Society The Edmund Burke Society is a conservative parliamentary debating society. Its membership is drawn largely from the Law School with significant participation by students from other parts of the University. The Society serves as a place where conservatives (and others) can gather and discuss ideas seriously in an amiable atmosphere. The primary activity of the Edmund Burke Society is debate. Each quarter, four debate caucuses are held, typically on Wednesday evenings. The topics debated by the Society vary in nature ranging from the timeless to the topical to the humorous. In the last year, for example, the Society has debated: "Resolved: The Enlightenment Poisoned Western Civilization"; "Resolved: Cut the Safety Net"; and "Resolved: Suburbia is Subversive." The debates follow an informal structure which allows for lively discussion. Speeches generally combine persuasive reasoning with wit and oratorical flourish. The Society also holds occasional toasting sessions, afternoon teas and wine tastings. These events add a social element to the Society and are a welcome respite from the rigors of The Law School.
