Calamity Jane Biography (popular name of Martha Jane Burke or Burk n©e Cannary
Legendary frontier figure, born in Princeton, Missouri, USA. Raised in Virginia City, MT (1864), she became an expert markswoman and rider and (dressed as a man) held her own in rough, mining-town society. Allegedly a pony-express rider and then a scout for General George Custer in Wyoming (1870s), she was companion to ‘Wild Bill’ Hickok, and was a heroine during the smallpox epidemic (1878) in the gold-rush town of Deadwood, SD. She is said to have threatened ‘calamity’ for any man who tried to court her, but in 1891 she married Clinton Burk(e) in El Paso, TX, who soon left her. She died in poverty, and is buried beside Hickok in Deadwood. She is the heroine of a novel Deadwood Dick on Deck, or Calamity Jane the Heroine of Whoop Up (1884) by Edward L Wheeler. Calamity Jane biography
A biography about Calamity Jane from the old west. The hero of the time period and legend of the present.
Calamity Jane was a frontier woman of some renown. Many legends and stories have been told about her. It is difficult to sort fact from fiction in many cases, but one thing is certain, she led a life that few women of that time would have survived. Calamity Jane was born May 1, 1852, near Princeton, Mo. with the given name of Martha Jane Cannary. Most accounts of her life agree that the family moved to Virginia City, Montana around the year 1865. Calamity Jane was always interested in things like riding, shooting and hunting. She gained the respect of many men in the wagon train they traveled with. She became an expert horsewoman and sharp shooter at an early age. Martha often fished and hunted with the men alongside her father and brothers. Stories state that Martha’s mother died en route to Virginia City. She also lost her father and brothers by the time she was fourteen years of age. Some accounts say her father died in Salt Lake City, Utah, while others have her separated from her father and brothers during an Indian uprising near Virginia City, Montana. Either way, Calamity Jane grew up in the mining towns of the West making a living in whatever fashion she could. She gained a formidable reputation as a sharpshooter and horsewoman and was known for her contempt of convention which she displayed by wearing men’s clothing, cussing, chewing tobacco, drinking and in general trying to best the men she associated with.

Martha Jane Cannary Burke (Calamity Jane)
Calamity Jane was born around 1852 in Missouri, as Martha Jane Cannary. When the Gold Rush began she moved to Deadwood, Dakota in the Black Hills of what we know now as South Dakota.
Calamity told folks that she and Wild Bill Hickok had married and that he was the father of her child, but nothing is known about the child and it is presumed to have been given up for adoption. Sadly, her true love, Wild Bill Hickok was murdered in 1876. She was admired for her tireless nursing of smallpox victims in the epidemic that struck in 1878.
Calamity is best known for her wearing of men's clothing and her fiery temper. In fact, she was nicknamed "Calamity" becuase any man who bothered her was threatened to endure a "calamity." Given her reputation, even the Sioux Indians left her alone because of her "calamity" and other eccentricities.
In 1891 she married Clinton Burke and they lived together for at least six years.

CALAMITY JANE
Calamity Jane was born Martha Jane Cannary, or Canary. She married Mr. Clinton (Charley) Burke and became Martha Jane Burke. Jane was born around 1852 and died in 1903. She lost her parents when she was quite young. Jane met Wild Bill Hickok and might or might not have been married to him. Juicy gossip insists that the two also had a child: Jean Hickok McCormick , born September 25, 1873. Around 1876, Jane dressed up in men's clothes and annoyed the tar out of the people of Deadwood, South Dakota. She bragged about her marksmanship, her experiences as a pony-express rider, and the time when she was a scout for Lieutenant Colonel Custer
JANE IN 1901

Jane loved to kick back a couple and that was apparently the reason why she got fired from her job at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, in 1901. Bill and Jane were buried next to each other in Deadwood, South Dakota.

I am an native of Mercer County, Missouri and grew up there. Every
year there is a "Calamity Jane" Day a whole week-end in the fall that the
county has a "celebration."
According to Mercer County Pioneer Traces, Vol. I, 1997, "Calamity Jane
claimed to have been married in 1855 to Clinton Burke." No one that I know
of has validated this marriage; I know of no documentation; I have never been interested enough to research. Of course, she did marry Wm. P. Steers in 1888 in Bingham Co., Idaho Territory. "The record shows that both were residents of Pocatello." I do have what are believed to be Martha's parents and siblings, as printed in above publication if anyone is interested. No, I do not believe that my BURK family is any relation to one Clinton Burke. If we are, that is one family that I have never had any information on. Anyone with any information to the contrary, let me know. Wouldn't that

Z Calamity Jane Biography Martha Jane Cannary-Burke , better known as Calamity Jane (May 1, 1852 (?) - August 1, 1903) was a American Indian fighter and frontierswoman who came to the public eye via her association with Wild Bill Hickok.
She was born Martha Jane Cannary (or Canary) in Princeton, Missouri. Her mother died in 1866 and her father died in 1867 (in Utah). In 1870, she signed on as a scout with George Armstrong Custer, and adopted the uniform of a soldier. It is unclear whether she was actually enlisted in the U.S. Army at the time. She was involved with a number of campaigns in the long-running military conflicts involving Native Americans. In 1872, she acquired the nickname "Calamity Jane," by rescuing her superior Captain Egan from an ambush near Sheridan, Wyoming.
In 1876, Jane served briefly as a rider with the Pony Express and settled in the area of Deadwood, South Dakota, in the Black Hills region. She claimed to have been married to Wild Bill Hickok at some time prior to Hickok's death in 1876, and that Hickok was the father of her child, born September 25, 1873, who was placed for adoption. In 1878 Jane nursed the victims of a smallpox epidemic in the Dakota territories. She married Clinton Burke in 1891 after the couple had been living together several years.
In 1896, Jane began touring with Wild West shows, which she continued for the rest of her years. Her venturesome habits, hard drinking, and rough lifestyle made her a memorable, if secret, role model to independent minded women of her time and after.

(Calamity Jane)
Martha Jane Cannary Burke
.....Born 1852....near Princeton, MO. Her biggest love was horses, a fondness for the outdoors and adventure. She started riding at an early age. She was able to ride the most stubborn and vicious horses. Marthy was FIERCELY independent. She tried to earn her keep by working at Proper Female occupations ... like cooking and washing clothes, but them tame activities didn't suit her. She AIMED to get around the many rules and restrictions females had on them, so she quit wearing skirts and started dressing like, and preteding to be a boy, so she could get hired for more exciting jobs and better pay.
At an early age she learned to cuss like a mule skinner, gamble, shoot better than most men and even learned to like the taste of whiskey. Around the age of 16 she made her way all over the West, behaving so fearlessly and outrageously that she was bound to be noticed. Anyone who encountered her, NEVER believed more than briefly that she was a boy, so a problem arose, what could you call a female who somehow got away with defying so many rules? "I can't remember just how or when the name Calamity Jane came to stick with me, I could tell you at elast half a dozen stories....some believe it was because, when any one opposed me, I would threaten that a calamity would befall them.."
Martha "Calamity Jane" Cannary Burke died in 1903. She was buried in Mount Moriah cemetery in Deadwood, South Dakota, next to Wild Bill Hickok...Bill was the LOVE OF HER LIFE.
