Military Bridge, Fort Laramie, 2001. Photo by Geoff Dobson. For discussion and additional photos of the Military Bridge, see Fort Laramie . Opening the line required the construction of swing stations and home stations to service the stages and their passengers. As indicated by the the photos, most were crude affairs constructed of logs and sod.
Running Water Station. As can be seen, the station at Running Water was a soddie. The barn, however, was more substantial, made of stone but with sod roof.
Changing horses at Running Water Station. Running Water Station was about 1 1/2 miles west of present day Lusk at Silver Cliff.
Ruins of Barn at Running Water Station. But prior to the coming of the stage line, other than the hotel at Ft. Laramie, the traveler northward of Cheyenne found few if any places of public accommodation, no road ranches, no taverns. Mrs. Johnson in her account of her 1874 trek northward to visit the Indian agencies, describes having to camp at night. Along the way, she writes of the nightly ritual of picking the burrs out of one's clothes, the evening repasts being blown away by whirlwinds coming off Rawhide Buttes, and in the evening, as "a blood-red sunset flames from the horizon to the upper sky: and as it darkens, and the wolves begin to howl, we think of * * * all the wild stories we have heard of robbers and fights and Indian massacres."

Her brother utilized and claimed for his own glory the fruits of laborious calculations made by Caroline (as did Albert Einstein of his wife's work) in the usual way of male prerogative.
By taking time out from running her brother's household and catering to his personal needs, doing his calculation, and polishing the mirrors used in the telescopes etc., she still found time to find three nebulae in 1783 and eight comets from 1786 to 1797.
Her individual fame grew and she received a direct salary from the King as her brother's assistant in 1787.

Lucille Mulhall Click on Image to Enlarge Lucille Mulhall was the woman for whom the term "cowgirl" was coined. First competing with men at the age of 13, Lucille later won three gold medals in Texas for steer roping, as well as many other medals, trophies and honors. Lucille had a natural talent for horse training and in 1912 had trained her best known horse "Governor" to take a man's coat off, put it back on, and walk up and down stairs, as well as many other unusual tricks. Will Rogers called her the world's greatest rider. Tillie Baldwin Click on Image to Enlarge Born in Norway, Tillie Baldwin moved to America as a teenager. Drawn to adventure and travel, Tillie became a part of the Miller Brothers 101 Wild West Show. She was a champion trick rider, relay racer and bronc rider. At the Winnipeg Stampede in 1913, Tillie won the Standing Roman Race over the male competitors. This race involves racing around a track standing with each foot on one of two horses. Tillie was the only woman to try, and excel at, steer wrestling. Top of Page
Calamity Jane Click on Image to Enlarge Martha Jane Cannary, born in 1848, was best known as Calamity Jane. Working as a scout for General Custer in 1870, Martha left her skirts for the more comfortable uniform of a soldier. Martha was popular with the men in the company who respected her unlimited nerve and courage. Her nickname came from Captain Egan in 1872. The captain was surrounded by a large band of Indians. He was wounded, unhorsed, and fighting desperately for his life. Martha rode into the center of the fighting, lifted the captain onto her horse and galloped back out. While the captain survived thanks to Martha, the rest of the company was killed. During his recovery Captain Egan laughingly referred to Martha as "Calamity Jane, the heroine of the plains". Martha retired in 1885 to marry Clinton Burk and eventually raise her baby girl - who looked like her father but had the temper of her mother.

Martha Jane "Calamity Jane" Cannary
Image Donated by Corbis - Bettmann NAME: Martha Jane "Calamity Jane" Cannary Burke DATE OF BIRTH: May 1, 1852 PLACE OF BIRTH: Princeton, Missouri FAMILY BACKGROUND: Martha (or Marthy) Jane Cannary was the oldest of six children, having two brothers and three sisters, born to Robert and Charlotte Cannary. Both of her parents were born in Ohio. In 1865, the family emigrated over five months with a wagon train from Missouri to Virginia City, Montana. Her mother died along the way in Black Foot, Montana, in 1866. Shortly after arriving in Virginia City, the family left in the spring of 1866 for Utah, arriving at Salt Lake City in the summer. They remained there a year, until her father died in 1867. As the oldest child, Martha Jane took over as head of the family and took them to Fort Bridger, Wyoming Territory, arriving in May 1868. From there, they traveled to Piedmont, Wyoming, on the Union Pacific Railroad. EDUCATION: In the frontier country she grew up in, Martha Jane likely received little or no formal education.

Calamity Jane went to Deadwood, Dakota, during the Gold Rush in the Black Hills. There, after the 1876 murder of Wild Bill Hickok, she claimed that he was the father of her child and that they'd been married. (The child, if it existed, was said to have been born September 25, 1873, and given up for adoption.) Calamity Jane was noted her habit of dressing in men's clothing. She nursed victims of a smallpox epidemic in 1878, also dressed as a man. She was something of a local legend because the Sioux Indians left her alone (as well as because of her other eccentricities).
