    Audio Interview with Anthony Burgess
Anthony Burgess, author of Flame into Being: Life and Words of D.H. Lawrence The Kingdom of the Wicked and A Clockwork Orange , became a writer out of necessity. Writing was always something he loved, but he did it more as a hobby - at least until 1959, when a doctor said he would only have one year to live due to a brain tumor. After that, he could not find a job, so he turned to writing full-time for the next 40 years. His book on D.H. Lawrence was especially important to him. Burgess found many similarities with Lawrence, both as a writer and as a man. They both came from similar backgrounds and they both had controversial books. For Burgess, it was A Clockwork Orange . Not much was said about the book until ten years after its publication when it was made into a movie. Burgess was accused of promoting rape, violence, fornication - criticisms he was still trying to live down at the time of this interview. Burgess said the real intent of the book was to address the conflict between good and evil. This same theme is also evident in The Kingdom of the Wicked , where he delves into the conflict from the theological angle. But ultimately, this novel is a comedy.

  • Anthony Burgess "A Clockwork Orange" Print story E-mail story Backflip this story to find it again Recognized as one of the literary geniuses of our time, Anthony Burgess produced thirty-two novels, a volume of verse, sixteen works of nonfiction, and two plays. Originally a composer, his creative output also included countless musical compositions, including symphonies, operas, and jazz. The author's musicality is evident in the lyrical and dramatic reading he gives in this recording. Anthony Burgess' 1963 classic, "A Clockwork Orange," stands alongside Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World as a classic of twentieth century post-industrial alienation, often shocking readers into explorations of the meaning of free will and the conflicts between good and evil. Anthony Burgess died in 1993.

Tragically his mother and sister both were killed by Spanish flu whilst he was still a a baby. Young John attended Bishop Bilsborrow Primary School in Moss Side where he was taught by nuns (he later gave up Catholicism), before going to Xavarian College. He later attended Manchester University where he was to meet Llewla Isherwood Jones, whom he was to marry in 1940 before serving six years in the army during the Second World War. He eventually became an education officer in Malaysia and Brunei and was able to speak nine languages! After collapsing in a Malaysian classroom in 1959, Anthony Burgess, was transported back to England where he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and was given one year to live. He began writing novels to secure posthumous royalties for Llewla. Under the pseudonym of 'Joesph Kell', he wrote

Anthony Burgess reads from his cult classic, "A Clockwork Orange." This novel consists of a series of episodes in the life of Alex, a young tough who lives in a nightmare future of violence and sadism. Burgess created a special language he calls "Nadsat," a kind of anglo-russian fusion. Words like "stary," Russian for "old" and "horrorshow," from the Russian "khoroscho," meaning "good" pepper the descriptions Alex gives of his antisocial activities. • The Real Life of Anthony Burgess by Andrew Biswell Buy this book
Andrew Biswell’s new biography, which generously allows Burgess’s friends and enemies to speak in their own voices, flushes out the worst aspects of Lewis. It presents Burgess’s life with a sobriety and care that are at once admirable and slightly chilling. Burgess’s life was always one of the main sources of his fiction, so much so that his two volumes of autobiography, Little Wilson and Big God (1987) and You’ve Had Your Time (1990), make it very hard to work out where life ends and art begins. Many of the central events of his life became stories, which were retold in different versions on talkshows and in novels. How much time did his father really devote to playing the piano in the local cinema in Manchester, as against his less glamorous day job as a tobacconist? Was his mother really a music-hall starlet known as the Beautiful Belle Burgess? Biswell kindly remarks that no lady of that name appears on any of the playbills he’s examined.

Paul Phillips, director of orchestras and chamber music at Brown, has organized the concert, which is free to the public. "Most people know Anthony Burgess as a British novelist and essayist," Phillips said, "but he was also a very gifted composer who wrote a vast amount of music of all types, including orchestral, ballet and chamber music compositions." Anthony Burgess
British novelist, composer, librettist, essayist, semanticist, translator and critic, Anthony Burgess published over 50 books. In a 1973 interview in The Paris Review about the art of fiction, he said, "The ideal reader of my novels is a lapsed Catholic and failed musician, short-sighted, color-blind, auditorily biased, who has read the books that I have read."
His best-known novel, A Clockwork Orange (1962), offered a bleak vision of a violence-ridden future. It follows a murderous, Beethoven-loving teen-age gang leader in complacent and conformist society. Roving bands of delinquents fight, steal and rape to assert their freedom against the conformity of a clockwork society. Dark and powerful, A Clockwork Orange is written in an artificial language that owes something to Russian but most of all to Burgess's uninhibited experimentation with language.
William Burroughs, another linguistic experimenter, said of the novel: "I do not know of any other writer who has done as much with language as Mr Burgess has done here." The brutality depicted in A Clockwork Orange emerged after an assault on Burgess's first wife Lynne in 1943 by American GI's in London, that resulted in the loss of their expected child.
