Critiquing the Missional Movement
Now that all the Sovereign Grace Ministries messages are free, I’m slowly feasting message-by-message in a long and delicious buffet of audio. Today I finally arrived at Dave Harvey’s message from the SGM Leadership Conference this Spring (at the time, I was on the other side of the wall listening to Dever speak on his annual reading schedule Harvey, the author of the excellent book When Sinners Say I Do: Discovering the Power of the Gospel for Marriage (Shepherd’s Press: 2007), is also an expert church planter and apostolic leader within SGF. This Spring in his session “Watch Your Mission: To Be, or Not to Be, ‘Missional,’” he assessed the strengths and weakness of the missional movement. In part, he argues the MM muddies the Cross-centered focus of the Church and misunderstands the apostolic context of the Great Commission. Here’s the heart of his outline: 1. What are the Strengths of Missional Churches?
A. Missional Churches Have a Commendable Passion for Evangelism.

Bunyan was born in November 1628 at Elstow, near Bedford, the son of a tinker. He served an apprenticeship at his father's trade, and at about the age of 17, during the civil war, fought in the Parliamentary army. About 1648 he married Margaret Bentley, a member of one of the Puritan sects of the day; Bunyan experienced a religious conversion and joined her church. In 1655 Bunyan became one of the leaders of a congregation of Nonconformists in Bedford, giving sermons as a lay preacher. After his wife died, Bunyan remarried and became a popular preacher, speaking to large audiences. However, after the restoration of Charles II in 1660, Puritans lost the privilege of freedom of worship, and it was declared illegal to conduct divine service except in accordance with the forms of the Church of England. Bunyan, who persisted in his unlicensed preaching, was confined to Bedford county jail from 1660 to 1672, although during a part of this time he was allowed a degree of freedom and was able to support his family by making shoelaces.

Neither trouble your heads though you have not commentaries and exposition. Pray and read, read and pray; for a little from God is better than a great deal from men. Also, what is from men is uncertain, and is often lost and tumbled over by men; but what is from God is fixed as a nail in a sure place. There is nothing that so abides with us as what we receive from God; and the reason why the Christians in this day are at such a loss as to some things is that they are contented with what comes from men's mouths, without searching and kneeling before God to know of Him the truth of things. Things we receive at God's hands come to us as truths from the minting house, though old in themselves, yet new to us. Old truths are always new to us if they come with the smell of Heaven upon them.

One of the most prominent Puritans of all time, John Bunyan, was well known as a respected preacher during his lifetime and remembered through his writings to this day. While best known for The Pilgrim's Progress Holy War , and Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners , Bunyan actually wrote far more books of exposition, doctrine, theology, and the practical application of Reformed thought in the Christian's life. Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress has inspired readers for more than three hundred years. It is one of the best-loved and most widely read books in English literature and has been translated into more languages than any book, other than the Bible. Its prolific author applied the same simple and passionate writing style to literally dozens of Bible-centered and doctrinally rich texts that have inspired generations of Christians for centuries after his death. His preaching was not of the intertextual, learned, scholarly type that characterized earlier Elizabethan Puritanism. His low social origins and modest education generated a more direct, less theologically nuanced approach to the biblical text. Whereas the earlier Puritans theologized, Bunyan dramatized and allegorized with existential urgency.

Executive summary: Pilgrim's Progress English religious writer, born at Elstow, about a mile from Bedford, in November 1628. His father, Thomas Bunyan, was a tinker, or, as he described himself, a "brasier." The tinkers then formed a hereditary caste, which was held in no high estimation. Bunyan's father had a fixed residence, and was able to send his son to a village school where reading and writing were taught. The years of John's boyhood were those during which the Puritan spirit was in the highest vigor all over England; and nowhere had that spirit more influence than in Bedfordshire. It is not wonderful, therefore, that a lad to whom nature had given a powerful imagination and sensibility which amounted to a disease, should have been early haunted by religious terrors. Before he was ten his sports were interrupted by fits of remorse and despair; and his sleep was disturbed by dreams of fiends trying to fly away with him. As he grew older his mental conflicts became still more violent. The strong language in which he described them strangely misled all his earlier biographers except Robert Southey . It was long an ordinary practice with pious writers to cite Bunyan as an instance of the supernatural power of divine grace to rescue the human soul from the lowest depths of wickedness. He is called in one book the most notorious of profligates; in another, the brand plucked from the burning. Many excellent persons, whose moral character from boyhood to old age has been free from any stain discernible to their fellow-creatures, have, in their autobiographies and diaries, applied to themselves, and doubtless with sincerity, epithets as severe as could be applied to

John Bunyan's 17th-century book The Pilgrim's Progress is classic literature's most famous Christian allegory. Bunyan grew up in a village outside Bedford, England, the son of a tinker (or brazier a mender of metal household utensils). Initially he followed his father's trade, but in the late 1640s a spiritual awakening caused Bunyan to give up his "ungodly" ways and become a devoted student of biblical scripture. By the end of the 1650s he was a popular preacher and prolific writer who used plain language to spell out a theology in the tradition of Martin Luther and John Calvin . He was a prominent member of a nonconformist Baptist church in Bedford until his refusal to give up preaching without a license led to his imprisonment in 1660. He spent the next twelve years in jail, preaching to inmates and writing sermons, poems, essays and books. After his release he published the first of several editions of The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), an allegory in which a character named Christian encounters various perils on his way to Heaven. An entertaining read and Protestant teaching tool, the book became a standard of English literature and one of the most reprinted religious texts in the world. Bunyan's other books include
