    Bunyan, John
Bunyan, John u n) [ key , English author, b. Elstow, Bedfordshire. After a brief period at the village free school, Bunyan learned the tinker's trade, which he followed intermittently throughout his life. Joining the parliamentary army in 1644, he served until 1647. The reading of several pious books and a constant study of the Bible intensified Bunyan's religious beliefs, and in 1653 he began acting as lay preacher for a congregation of Baptists in Bedford. In this capacity he came into conflict with the Quakers led by George Fox and turned to writing in defense of his beliefs. In 1660 agents of the restored monarchy arrested him for unlicensed preaching, and he remained in prison for the next 12 years. During this period Bunyan wrote nine books, the most famous of which is

Sam Storms, John Piper, and John Bunyan vs. Wayne Grudem, Al Mohler, and Mark Dever
This whole baptism debate is shaping up to be very interesting indeed. It is surely the first time in living memory that those who I can only think to call the "big guns" have used the blogging medium to have a serious theological debate in front of the rest of us. While Lig Duncan and Justin Taylor have both helpfully shared a bit about what paedobaptists believe, this debate has rather been about whether our local churches must have clear stances on this issue.
Arguing for a more rigorous approach, we have seen

Description
Bunyan. Cowper. Brainerd. We read their stories and wonder how they endured. How does one survive twelve years in a dank prison cell? How does one survive month after month of a depression so debilitating that death seems the only hope? How does one endure tuberculosis? Or cancer, or emptiness, or death, or loneliness, or divorce? Whatever the trial may be, how does one endure without the soul shriveling up and blowing away with the breeze? In the lives of John Bunyan, William Cowper, and David Brainerd, we find the strength of soul that not only endures hardship, but honors God in the midst of it. The Giver and Sustainer of life enabled them to worship through all their suffering. That's why their affliction bore so much fruit. The story of their suffering, their perseverance, and their passion is one that can inspire the same hunger for the supremacy of God in your life.

John Bunyan
The name of John Bunyan is forever linked with the town of Bedford. Bunyan was born in 1628 just outside the village of Elstow, on the outskirts of modern Bedford. His precise birth site is unknown, though it seems likely he was born in a now lost cottage near two fields called "Further Bunyans" and "Bunyans". A plaque on the supposed site of the cottage was erected in 1951. He was the son of a tinker, and may well have helped his father in that occupation during his youth. Bunyan reported on his own childhood that he loved to play "tip-cat", a form of rounders, on the village green in Elstow.

John Bunyan Upon an attempted suicide, John Bunyan was shown this vision of spiritual realms. Bunyan (1628-1688), an English author and preacher imprisoned for his faith, is best known for his fictional work, The Pilgrim's Progress . However, his NDE quoted here is from the book entitled Hell is Real , compiled by Mrs. M. A. Daoud. This NDE is described in seventeen century language and Biblical thought. The descriptions of the hell realms by Bunyan can be found in many other NDEs, such as Howard Pittman Kenneth Hagin George Ritchie and Howard Storm . But these hellish realms have often been mistaken by Christian NDErs as being a place of eternal torment and damnation, when in reality they are spiritual states of self-reflection and self-condemnation. The only reason for these hell realms is to purify souls from destructive thoughts until they decide to enter into the light. Such hellish near-death accounts are often described in terms of the religious perspective of the NDEr. NDE researcher Jody Long of NDERF explains this in an excellent way. She states:

Timeline Bunyan was born just outside the village of Elstow, on the outskirts of modern Bedford. Approx 1660 When the Restoration of the monarchy took place in 1660 preaching was forbidden in an attempt to restrain the growth of Independent Congregations. Bunyan refused to stop preaching, and he was arrested in the village of Samsell. He was tried at Bedford Assizes and ordered held in the County Gaol until he agreed to conform. Charles II issued his Declaration of Religious Indulgences, and Bunyan, along with other religious offenders, was released from custody. He bought a barn on Mill Street and converted the building to a home for his Independent Congregation. The king was pressured into repealing his Declaration, and Bunyan was cast back into gaol until 1677. John Bunyan dies and he is buried in Bunhill Fields, City Road, London.

The Pamphlet Debate between John Bunyan and Edward Burrough, 1656-57
edited by Larry Kuenning
When Puritan John Bunyan and Quaker Edward Burrough tore into each other's theologies in a series of pamphlets in 1656-57, each quoted and criticized numerous passages of the other's work. Each also, of course, complained that the other had misquoted and misunderstood him. In 1659 George Fox wrote a further Quaker reply to Bunyan's pamphlets in the same style of quoting and criticizing selected passages. This site presents all the documents in the debate, with the cross-references among them automated in the standard format of Web documents. This makes it much easier to study the flow of the debate by jumping back and forth among the documents as they quote each other. My dissertation was based on a study of this material. It too is at this site, similarly linked in with the documents.

Whenever words are underlined and in color - or highlighted in whatever system your browser uses for text links - they indicate that the author is referring to another passage. Usually (but not always) the highlighted words are a quotation formula such as "he says," "thy next words," or "I wrote." Clicking on a link of this type will take you to the passage the author has in mind. When there is a graphic icon in the text - either a thought balloon or a pencil - it means that someone refers to the words following the icon. Clicking on the icon will take you to a

The Testimony of a Hundred Witnesses CONVERSION OF JOHN BUNYAN. John Bunyan, the world-renowned author of the Pilgrim's Progress, was never a drunkard or a libertine, but was given to profanity, Sabbath-desecration and "heart-atheism." Amidst his wicked career, he had many gloomy forebodings of the wrath to come; and his nights were often scared with visions, which the boisterous diversions of his waking day could not always dispel. He would occasionally dream that the last day had come, and that the quaking earth was opening its mouth to let him down to hell. As he grew older he grew harder. He married a pious wife, who had two books, The Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven, and the Practice of Piety. He read these books, which had some effect upon him. One day he heard a sermon on Sabbath-breaking, and it haunted his conscience throughout the day. When in the midst of the excitement of that afternoon's diversions, a voice seemed to dart from heaven into his soul, "Wilt thou leave thy sins, and go to heaven, or have thy sins and go to hell?" His arm, which was raised to strike a ball in play, was suddenly arrested, and looking up to heaven, he said, it appeared as if the Lord Jesus was looking down [21] upon him in remonstrance and deep displeasure. He still continued on in sin, however, and ran into the delusion that repentance was now too late.
