      Bull, Emma - Bone Dance
add to memories I ended up getting a good two-thirds of the way through this book before realizing that I had absolutely no idea what was going on and who all these characters were. It made a lot more sense the second time round. I figure reading things on five hours of sleep generally doesn't lead to greater comprehension.
The book takes place in post-nuclear-holocaust America sometime in the distant past, the US government developed mind control weapons. The Horsemen are humans who can somehow hijack another person's mind and knowledge (they call this "riding" a person, though I think that sounds very sketchy ^_~), and one of them or a group of them pushed the button that set off the nukes down in South America. Sparrow, the protagonist, is a trader dealing in pre-war videos and CDs and other assorted media, and one of the things I like about the world is this sense of something lost.
No one reads the old books anymore in this world, because no one has access to them. The man controlling the city Sparrow lives in controls not only the source of electricity and power, but also knowledge.

As I was living on Barton Avenue in Prospect Park in Minneapolis at the time the book debuted, I have always had a warm place in my heart for "War for the Oaks." I could even pinpoint the spot on the hill where the Phouka helped Eddi across a washout.

    The California Crossroads Barbershop Quartet
is stuck in the terminal on their way to a competition in San Antonio, TX. To pass the time, they just sang me a set of love songs (they apologized for it being a little early for Valentine's Day) and finished with a gorgeous arrangement of Randy Newman's "Dayton, Ohio."
Thank you, universe, for a pair of delayed flights and the generosity of four wonderful singers.
    Gifts for Writers
    • Jan. 23rd, 2008 at 6:33 PM

There are things that would be useful to writers, however, that they never buy for themselves. One of these is a gym membership. Writers need these rather desperately, and never get them for themselves.
The problem with a gym membership, though, is that the average writer will never have time to go to the gym today . It's a good idea, and they're going to go, really. But maybe tomorrow there'll be time.

Just a reminder, the books reviewed here are recommended. I can't see wasting time reading a book I don't like when there are so many fabulous reads out there. Dramarama
Lockhart, E.
It is easy to see why E. Lockhart is one of the most talked about new YA authors out there. Dramarama, the story of Sarah, turned Sadye, who goes off to drama camp with her best friend Demi, a gorgeous and talented African-American gay guy is dead on. I recognized several of the kids in my teen book clubs in Dramarama, the guy who can really belt out a song and has star quality, the girl who isn't going to make it on stage but turned out to be a crack stage manager, and others. It is full of truths about friendships how they start and how they change and about self perception. Teen/ Contemporary Life/Coming of Age
