Mikhail Afanasievich Bulgakov was born in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1891. He studied medicine at Kiev University from 1909 to 1916, and in 1916 he took up practice as a doctor, first in district hospitals, then in Kiev during the German and Red Army occupations. These experiences led him to become addicted to morphine, but with the help of his first wife, Tatiana Nikolaevna, he kicked the habit, became a journalistic writer and, in 1921, moved to Moscow, Russia. In 1924, after finding journalistic work with a few Soviet periodicals, divorcing his first wife and remarrying, he attempted publication of his first novel

Bulgakov, Mikhail Afanasievich . Born on 3 May (15 May, new style) 1891 in Kiev, the eldest son of a professor at the Kiev Theological Academy. He had two brothers and four sisters. From 1901 to 1909 he attended Aleksandrovsky High School and enjoyed the theater. His father died in 1907. In 1909 he enrolled at the Medical School of Kiev University. In 1913 he married Tatiana Lappa. After graduating from medical school in 1913, he moved to the village of Nikolskoe and later to Vyazma for his obligatory medical service. He returned to Kiev in February 1918 and opened a private medical practice at his home. In the confused political situation of revolutionary Ukraine, he was drafted by the Whites as a field doctor and sent to the Caucasus. Toward the end of 1919 he left the military. This was also the year he began writing. He recalls: "Once in 1919 when I was traveling at night by train I wrote a short story. In the town where the train stopped, I took the story to the publisher of the newspaper, who published the story." He settled in Vladikavkaz and undertook journalistic work. It was here that he wrote his first plays

The street is also famous for some older constructions that are considered to be of great historical value. For example, the famous Andreevskaya Church, dating back to the 18th century, is located here as well. The building number 13 was designed by architect I. I. Gordenin over the century ago. Bulgakov and his parents moved to this house in 1906 and lived there until 1919, when they were forced to leave the city, due to the "time of troubles". Later in this very house the writer settled the main characters of his famous book "Belaya Gvardia", or "White Guard". Several decades later Victor Nekrasov, a well-known literary critic and a writer, published an essay called "At Turbins", devoted to the life and creativity of Mikhail Bulgakov. The name of the essay turned out to be so becoming that the building at 13 Andreyevsky Spusk got the new name and under this name went down in the city folklore. Nowadays the legendary house is one of the most famous landmarks of Andreyevsky Spusk.

  • Bulgakov, Mikhail 1891-1940
(Born Mikhail Afanasevich Bulgakov. Wrote under the pseudonyms Emma B., F. S-ov, Em. Be., Ivan Bezdomny, M. Ol-Rait, and Neznakomets) Russian novelist, novella and short story writer, dramatist, biographer, and essayist.
    INTRODUCTION
Considered one of the foremost satirists of post-revolutionary Russia, Bulgakov is best known for his novel Master i Margarita (The Master and Margarita), which is recognized as one of the greatest Russian novels of the century. His short stories and fictional sketches, like his other works, often present the adjustment of the Russian intellectual class to life under communist rule. Heavily influenced by Nikolai Gogol, Bulgakov combined fantasy, realism, and satire to ridicule modern progressive society in general and the Soviet system in particular.
    Biographical Information
Bulgakov was born in 1891 into a Russian family of the intellectual class in the Ukrainian city of Kiev. Music, literature, and theater were important in the family life of the young Bulgakov, as was religion. His father, a professor at the Kiev theological academy, instilled in his son a belief in God and an interest in spiritual matters that he would retain throughout his life. Bulgakov attended Kiev's most prestigious secondary school, where he earned a reputation for playing practical jokes and inventing stories. He continued his education as a medical student at the University of Kiev and graduated with distinction in 1916. Assigned to noncombat duty in the Russian army during World War I, Bulgakov worked for several months in frontline military hospitals until he transferred to a remote village, where he served as the only doctor for an entire district; his experiences in this position served as the basis for the stories of

    Mikhail Bulgakov
Mikhail Bulgakov was born in Kiev in May 1891. He studied and briefly practised medicine and, after indigent wanderings through revolutionary Russia and the Caucasus, he settled in Moscow in 1921. His sympathetic portrayal of White characters in his stories, in the plays The Days of the Turbins (The White Guard), which enjoyed great success at the Moscow Arts Theatre in 1926, and Flight (1927), and his satirical treatment of the officials of the New Economic Plan, led to growing criticism, which became violent after the play The Purple Island.
