  • 'Your novel has been read,' Woland began, turning to the master, 'and the only thing said about it was that, unfortunately, it is not finished. So, then, I wanted to show you your hero. For about two thousand years he has been sitting on this platform and sleeping, but when the full moon comes, as you see, he is tormented by insomnia. It torments not only him, but also his faithful guardian, the dog. If it is true that cowardice is the most grievous vice, then the dog at least is not guilty of it. Storms were the only thing the brave dog feared. Well, he who loves must share the lot of the one he loves.'

'Kant ought to be arrested and given three years in Solovki asylum for that "proof" of his!' Ivan Nikolayich burst out completely unexpectedly. 'Ivan!' whispered Berlioz, embarrassed. But the suggestion to pack Kant off to an asylum not only did not surprise the stranger but actually delighted him. 'Exactly, exactly!' he cried and his green left eye, turned on Berlioz glittered. 'That's exactly the place for him! I said to him myself that morning at breakfast: "If you'll forgive me, professor, your theory is no good. It may be clever but it's horribly incomprehensible. People will think you're mad."' Berlioz's eyes bulged. At breakfast...to Kant?

Mikhail Bulgakov was born on May 15th, 1891, in Kiev, Ukraine. He was the son of a professor at the Kiev Theological Academy. He graduated as a doctor in 1916. After eighteen months in general practice in the depths of rural Russia (the subject matter of A Country Doctor's Notebook) he set up in Kiev as a venereologist. After another eighteen months or so, Bulgakov moved to the Caucasus, due to the upheavals of the civil war. In 1920 he gave up medicine to write. He settled in Moscow, earning a living as a freelance journalist. He completed the short, satirical novel The Heart of a Dog in 1925. It remained unpublished in the Soviet Union until 1987 - he had great problems with the censors throughout his life. Three collections of his short stories - including the Diaboliad and A Country Doctor's Notebook were published in 1925-27, and The White Guard was serialised in Rossiya, although this journal was closed down before it printed the entire novel.
However, The White Guard was dramatised as The Days of the Turbins in 1926, and was very successful. The Days of the Turbins was banned three years after its first performance, but later, in 1932, Bulgakov personally appealed to Stalin to remove the ban. After a performance was put on for Stalin alone, it was permitted back on the stage. Such was the importance - artistic and pecuniary - of this play to the Moscow Arts Theatre that they called it "the second Seagull". This is a reference to Chekhov's Seagull, one of the first plays to be performed at the M.A.T.

What seems a fanciful premise was perhaps less so for a persecuted writer in the Soviet Union under Stalin. Mikhail Bulgakov completed his novel The Master and Margarita just before his death in 1940, but it remained officially unpublished until 1966, whereupon it achieved the status of an underground masterpiece. Faust , has prepared us for something else; it is a question asked by Faust, answered by Mephistopheles: " '...who are you, then?'/'I am part of that power which eternally/wills evil and eternally works good.' " Insofar as Woland's evil manifests itself in the sudden, menacing disappearance of various characters, as well as the deaths of Berlioz and Baron Meigel, he inevitably reminds us of how Stalin dealt with actual and potential political enemies. But Woland is also a force for good, as evidenced by his orchestration of the reunion of the novel's other central figures

His best works, including the famous The Master and Margarita, were not published until after his death. His dramas were struck off the repertoire-The Days of the Turbins at the Moscow Arts Theatre and his plays about Moliere and Pushkin. During his lifetime, not a single major anthology of his short stories was ever published Bulgakov's works have since been recognised as classics; his books have been published in all the languages of the civilised world, studies of him have reached the four-figure mark and the number is still rising; editions of his books in the USSR have run into millions. He has won the highest praise from Gabriel Garcia Marquez of Columbia and Kendzaburo Oe of Japan. Kirghiz writer Chinghiz Aitmatov looks on Bulgakov as his teacher. Mikhail Bulgakov's books have at last come into their own with their wild fantasy and their prophetic ideas about man and humanity. Our collection includes one of his most vivid stories, "The Fateful Eggs".

Mihail Bulgakov (1891-1940) Russian journalist, playwright, novelist, and short story writer, whose major work was the Gogolesque fantasy The Master and Margarita . In the story the Devil visits Stalinist Moscow to see if he can do some good. The book is considered a major Russian novel of the 20th century. It first appeared in a censored form in the Soviet journal Moskva in 1966-67. Bulgakov used satire and fantasy also in his other works, among them the short story collection Diaboliad The naked man pushed his way to the front, tapped with his nail on the bronze bonnet and said:
"Here, comrades, we have a remarkable character. A notorious harlot of the first half of the 19th century.. ."
The lady with the stomach turned purple, took her young daughter by the hand and quickly drew her away.

(from 'The Fire of the Khans') Mihail Bulgakov was born in Kiev, Ukraine, as the eldest son of a theology professor at the Kiev Theological Academy. After attending First Kiev High School (1900-09), Bulgakov studied medicine at the Kiev University (1909-16). From 1916 to 1918 he served as a doctor in front-line and district hospitals. These experiences he described in notes of a young doctor, 'Zapiski yunogo vracha' (1925-26). In 1918-19 Bulgakov worked as a doctor in Kiev, and witnessed the German occupation and then the occupation by the Red Army. During these war years he used a morphine, but with the helped of his first wife he managed to win the addiction. In 1920 Bulgakov abandoned medicine in favor of a career as a writer. He organized in Vladikavkaz, Caucasus, a 'sub-department of the arts', wrote stories for newspapers

Mikhail Afanasjevitch Bulgakov
For the first time I read "The Master and Margarita" written by Bulgakov when I was 17 and then I could not do without it anymore. The novel was published in the magazine "Moskva" in 1966, 26 years after the death of Bulgakov. I was lucky to get this magazine for two days from a friend of mine. Many of my friends could only read the copies of the magazine which were handed on again and again. In those days it was not simple to make a copy: all the copying machines were stictly controled by secret service. That's why there were some people who have manually copied the novel. (This may seem absurd nowadays, but there was no other possibility at that time.) Since then Bulgakov is my world.
Mikhail Afanasjevitch. There are many ressources on Bulgakov (some of them are listed here ) on Internet. Particularly in Russian, no wonder.
My intention is, however, to offer some multilingual pages to provide overview and comparison.

    Introduction
Mikhail Bulgakov worked on this luminous book throughout one of the darkest decades of the century. His last revisions were dictated to his wife a few weeks before his death in 1940 at the age of forty-nine. For him, there was never any question of publishing the novel. The mere existence of the manuscript, had it come to the knowledge of Stalin's police, would almost certainly have led to the permanent disappearance of its author. Yet the book was of great importance to him, and he clearly believed that a time would come when it could be published. Another twenty-six years had to pass before events bore out that belief and

      PREFACE
Mikhail Bulgakov in the Western World (A Bibliography) reflects the holdings of the Library of Congress - books, pamphlets, and microforms - by and about Bulgakov. Because many of these works are unknown in Bulgakov's native land, the European Division of the Library of Congress has compiled the present bibliography of selected works from the West with the intention of reaching a wide range of readers, librarians and researchers in the former Soviet Union and the West. The bibliography includes some translations that are not held by the Library of Congress because of collection policies concerning translations with languages other then English. This bibliography attempts to depict the wide spectrum of interest by researchers in Bulgakov's role in the world - not only his influence on his contemporaries but his continuing influence. It is intended for researchers, librarians, bibliographers, bibliophiles, and for all those interested in the intellectual and spiritual heritage of the Russian and Ukrainian nations.

Background information, Questions for Reading , and further resources
Mikhail Afanas'evich Bulgakov was born on May 15 (May 3, Old Style), 1891, and died on March 10, 1940. He was educated as a doctor of medicine and only began to write seriously during the Russian Civil War, which followed the October Revolution of 1917. In his lifetime Bulgakov was best known as a playwright, but since his death (in his own bed!) his reputation as an author of fiction, science fiction ("Heart of a Dog" and "The Fatal Eggs") and a literary biographer ( ) has only grown. His novel The Master and Margarita , generally considered his masterpiece, was written during the last few years of his life, as his health was failing, and was never really completed to the author's satisfaction. His widow Elena Sergeevna preserved the manuscript of this very heterodox novel, which could have meant her own arrest and disappearance into the Stalinist camps, until a phase of relative liberalization made it possible to publish it in two installments in the journal Moskva in 1966 and 1967. After its publication, in an apporpriately Bulgakovian reversal of genre, the novel was adapted as a play and had a very successful and influential production at the Taganka Theater in Moscow.
