Review: Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold
I was not initially impressed by this story. In the first seven chapters (over a third of the book) not a lot happens, and it is basically an historical romance with a few dispensable SF trimmings: new bride accompanies powerful husband to his homeland and has problems adjusting to strange customs. It is all about the minutiae of social interactions, politics and dress, which isn't what I read SF for.
After that, the story gets moving and Bujold's story-telling ability turns the rest of the novel into a real page-turner. There is even an SF element which is important to the plot: the replicator. One detailed gripe: her decision to call all of the Barrayan nobles Vor-something caused me a lot of confusion, I was forever scratching my head to distinguish between Vortala, Vorhalas, Vorpatril, Vordarian and so on.
So far, I have slightly mixed feelings about this series. Bujold is an intelligent, perceptive writer who can handle action scenes as well as she does the social ones, and her characters are great. She writes as well as anyone I can think of. However, as I commented in my review of 'Shards of Honour', the SF elements tend to be minor aspects of her stories, and in Barrayar this is even more true than in 'Shards'. Despite this, I was sufficiently hooked by 'Barrayar' to want to proceed to the next in the series.

The Sharing Knife Yet despite this allusion, not only do the malices not make up the primary thread of the story, they are not even the primary antagonists. The main forces of opposition are Fawn and Dag's families. Both are initially opposed, even appalled, by the idea of their marriage. Fawn's family eventually comes to accept their union. Dag's mother and brother do not. Dag's mother, Cumbia, becomes the most striking of the supporting characters: resolutely determined to control her son's life and veto his choices, she refuses love and reconciliation with Dag, yet watches him longingly from concealment when he is unaware. Disdainful of Fawn, and confident that she knows Dag, she tells Fawn bluntly why Dag will abandon her: This quote highlights what ultimately binds the mix of genres together: Bujold's strength in characterization. Fawn's youthful innocence and her joy at first tasting a loving sexual bond are well drawn. Like

barrayar and beyond Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Bujold currently writes the best space opera around. Most of her books involve the Barrayaran Empire, and a particular fellow named Miles Vorkosigan. Miles is the son of Count Aral Vorkosigan, arguably the most powerful man in the empire after the emperor himself; for a good bit of the series, in fact, the emperor is underage, and Aral is the Regent. Aral is also an extremely competent admiral in the Barrayaran space navy; Miles' grandfather, Piotr, was just as a good a general. (Military prowess is an important part of life on Barrayar). Now, due to a gas attack on Mile's parents while he was in utero, Miles is small; fragile; somewhat misshapen. An easy fall can easily break one or more of his bones. But he is also ambitious, honorable, brilliant, quick-thinking (though not always far-seeing), and refuses to let his handicaps slow him down. In the first book about Miles

Outside of a Dog: Kate Nepveu's Book Log
Sunday, July 31, 2005 Lois McMaster Bujold's The Hallowed Hunt is set in the same universe as The Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls , but in a different country and some time earlier (it was inspired in part by an episode in a book called Mad Princes of Renaissance Germany ). Like the others, it revolves, first, around theology, and second, around the continuing effects of the past. Things get considerably get more complicated than this, of course; theologically, at least, this may be the most complex of the three novels. Unfortunately, its main characters are not as well suited to pulling the reader through these complexities as those of prior books. Not only are they individually less interesting to me, they have some serious competition. In Chalion , events were ultimately driven by the titular curse; in

Larry Wall, God, Lois McMaster Bujold
Part of what got me thinking about my last post is that I'm suffering a little crisis over Larry Wall. I'm really admiring his spirit. For instance, I like his way of expressing his Christianity
As if that weren't enough, he's into The Lois , as quoted here Note how we still periodically hear the phrase "serious literature". This is literature that is supposedly about Real Life. Let me tell you something. The most serious literature I've ever read is by Lois McMaster Bujold. Any of you read her? It's also the funniest literature I've ever read. It's also space opera. "Genre fiction," sneers the Modernist. Meaning it follows certain conventions. So what? Nobody in the world can mix gravity and levity the way Bujold does in her Vorkosigan books. It's oh so definitely about real life. So what if it follows space opera conventions. Sonnets follow certain conventions too, but I don't see them getting sneered at much these days. Certainly they were always called "serious".
How long till Bujold becomes required reading in high school? Far too long, in my opinion. Horrors. We wouldn't want our students actually enjoying what they read. It's notit's not Real Life.

Links to My Reviews Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga: A Miles-Centric Introduction The Vorkosigan science fiction series is set in a distant future when humanity has spread through wormhole nexuses to colonize the galaxy. One planet, Barrayar, suffered a period of isolation when its wormhole failed. This isolation, and a subsequent prolonged guerilla war against Cetagandan invaders, led to a harsh culture dominated by a warrior caste. Now Barrayar has reemerged as a growing empire, its contact with more sophisticated planets causing tension with its highly traditional culture. Miles Vorkosigan's father is the Prime Minister, and when in his mother's womb Miles was exposed to poisons during an assassination attempt. As a result his growth was stunted and his bones are brittle. Because of this he is a pariah on Barrayar, with its deep inhibitions against mutants. This, and the burden of living up to the family name, instills in Miles a drive to prove himself. But despite his remarkable intelligence and boundless energy he is physically unfit for military service. Rather than give up, through a series of misadventures Miles assumes a persona as Admiral Naismith and acquires a military of his own, the Dendarii Free Mercenaries. He remains loyal to Barrayar, however, and unbeknownst to the Dendarii, places the mercenaries at the disposal of the Empire. Imperial Security is only too happy to have a small fleet with which it can achieve strategic objectives anonymously, and Miles and the Dendarii begin a career of conducting secret missions for Barrayar.

19. Lois McMaster Bujold's "Vorkosigan" series? (In what order should I read...)
Opinion seems to be divided to reading them in order of the internal chronology (to avoid spoilers) or in order of publication. In either case, MIRROR DANCE, MEMORY, and KOMARR should be read last or the reader will likely miss some important connections. And I recommend reading SHARDS OF HONOR first in either case. The more recent editions of the Baen paperbacks have an internal chronology in the back of each book. By order of publication, the books in the series are SHARDS OF HONOR (1986), THE WARRIOR'S APPRENTICE (1986), ETHAN OF ATHOS (1986), FALLING FREE (1988), BORDERS OF INFINITY (1989), BROTHERS IN ARMS (1989), THE
