It has become interesting to ask the age of Professional Guests of Honor at the World Science Fiction Convention. And how long they were working in the field before the Worldcon honored them.
Birth year vs. year of Worldcon for Professional Guests of Honor
Sources:
Wikipedia entries on individual World Science Fiction Conventions (Worldcons) and Guests of Honor and Internet Science Fiction Database (ISFDB) bibliographies of authors and editors.
Rules:
Science fiction, fantasy, and horror count.
From my graphs, I eliminated Pro GoHs not known as authors or editors (e.g. artists, an essayist (Ley), GoHs from TV and motion pictures). In the case of some artists, it was difficult to learn the date of their first work in the field.
I eliminated the Ballantines because I'm not sure of the date of their first SF or fantasy work.
Most GoHs primarily known as editors have also written stories; I used date of first sale to mark their entry into the field. I'm not sure I have accurate figures on the first sales of Wolfgang Jeschke, Josef Nesvadaba, or Sakyo Komatsu. I did the best I could.

In the mid-1960s, he began doing regular book reviews, many of which appeared in . During the 1980s and early 1990s, he was involved with the Writers of the Future project, a contest that introduced such writers as Karen Joy Fowler, Robert Reed and David Zindell to the field. lgis Budrys became an SF reader at the age of six, with Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Brick Bradford and his Time Top in the Sunday funnies for the New York Journal-American. It was not easy, because he had to sneak the paper. In fact, he was opposed by his parents in all SF pursuits, this not mitigating until several years after he began selling stories.

Algis Budrys is an editor of tomorrow for Writers of the Future
By Jeff Berkwits lthough Algis Budrys has written only a handful of books in his 50-year career, he is considered by many scholars to be an important and vital voice in science fiction. His 1959 novel The Falling Torch sold more than 250,000 copies and remained in print for over a decade (it was subsequently re-issued in 1991 with restored text as Falling Torch ), while his classic adventure Rogue Moon (1960) has been designated by the Science Fiction Writers of America as one of the most influential stories in SF literary history. Budrys has served as a critic for both Galaxy and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction . He has been the coordinating judge for L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest for most of that competition's 18-year existence. (In that role, he will once again participate in the next Hubbard Achievement Awards ceremony on August 10 of this year.) In the following conversation, Budrys reveals why he believes it's important for established SF novelists not only to think and write about tomorrow, but also to guide those up-and-coming authors who will ultimately define science fiction in the future. You were born in East Prussia in 1931 to Lithuanian parents, and your family moved to the United States when you were only five years old. How did this uprooting affect your outlook on life and your writing?

    Algis Budrys
Algis Budrys may be the closest thing we have to a true renaissance man. He began his career in the 1950's with some of that decade's most memorable SF, including the classics Who? (1958) and Rogue Moon (1960), and his more recent fiction novels such as Michaelmas (1977) and Hard Landing (1993) has been just as hard hitting. In later years he devoted much of his energies towards criticism as an influential SF reviewer. In 1993 he launched one of the freshest new science fiction magazines of the nineties, Tomorrow Speculative Fiction , a Hugo award-nominee. In 1997, the magazine lived up to its name as Budrys pushed his child out of the nest and took it online, making it one of the first true commercial SF webzines. Budrys is the Guest of Honor at this year's World Science Fiction convention in San Antonio, Texas, LoneStarCon 2 Tomorrow SF

Algis Budrys Speaks. . . Besides being a multiple Nebula and Hugo-nominated science fiction writer, I have also been an editor for many years, mostly in non-science fiction fields. Stops along the way have included Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Playboy Press , and Woodall's Trailer Travel and other magazines published by the Woodall Publishing Company. And I've worked on a fair parcel of magazines in the field, as well. But now I'm the editor and publisher of my own Tomorrow Speculative Fiction Magazine , which is in its fourth year, with #20 on sale now. (It's five dollars for a single issue, $23 for a six-issue subscription in the United States, $29 outside, both from the Unifont Company, whose address you find on the next page. By the way, all purchases are shipped postpaid.) Here's what it looks like: But that's as may be. What I'm really calling your attention to is my book on writing. Writing to the Point , and my audio cassette, 84.2 Minutes of Algis Budrys . The writing book is a no-nonsense, 64-page softcover volume, consisting of everything I've learned in 44 years of editing, minus everything that's superfluous and confusing. It's stripped of extensive discussions of tense, case, and cetera, which I think are a lot of use to critics but of no earthly use to a writer. It simply tells you how to sell, in simple steps. And it will work.
