5 Poems: Janet Buck
    Measuring a Rotted Tooth
    I watch you watch him
waste all cotton balls of clouds
    drowning out the stinging hail
of grief embraced he can't define.
    Booze is like formaldehyde
    preserving soiled integrity,
    pickling the rising sun.
Divorce's smella failure clue blood clots in a pile of flour our mothers taught us to knead and serve in even slices of our strength. His drunken state, a wallowing where candor is a bug to squash crawling up a hapless leg. Anger is a grid to walk and mirrors are a narrow ledge. You start the car; it lurches in the morning's famine. Bottles roll from under seats. They own his heart, his soul, his pulse. Loving's feckless entity can't buy it back, cannot return a broken limb to standing tree without some dose of willingness. He fumbles down the unlit hall. Hands can't find a simple light switch on the wall.

Checkered Shadows
by Janet I. Buck The smoke alarm of laughter's tongue
when someone comes too close to me.
Smells the fire behind the walls.
Profanity and tragedy are very loud
and so the silence reigns.
I read you read my missing bones.
A treatise with its gilded side.
To me as plain as it could be.
They call it strength. I call it fate.
A kindergarten innocence revolving on the carousel of Barbie this and Barbie that. Negligees I'll never wear but learned to stack like dirty plates. Retarded faith in who I am. Self-consciousness and cuckoo clocks that make a noise and don't explain. Checkered shadows of the night. Too much the same as marks of chalk in lines around a murdered man. The combination of a smile unleashing nothing but the eyes. A turret with its guns arranged. Bullets bouncing off a can. I watch you watch me struggle on. Climbing hills and stairs of pride. Nuns and rulers of regret. Like bars around a prison cell. From you I learned that stumps are trees. That autographs of missing parts are just as worthy as the whole.

So why not be creative coming up with a career. Janet Goldstein: "I paint on everything." You could say Janet Goldstien was born with an eye for art. Featured Writer: Janet Buck Face-lift Had to do with legs, of course.
The over-lap was ugly here.
It was the flesh of difference.
Winnowed by your eyes alone,
I saw myself in blackened mirrors.
Pills and doctors. Meaning well.
Slice a leg and sew a scar.
Do it over once again.
Arrogance and ignorance.
Symptomatic platitudes.
Didn't know what souls could do. To you I am a rash of sorts. I am missing crucial parts. But you were ill in attitude. I have simple common sense. Not purple mountain majesty of very tragic skies indeed. Strength and rainbows. Well, they fade. Waterways of gutted pride. Spare-change limbs you rearranged. A booster-shot for resumes, you pass me over nets of dreams as volleyballs across a court with missions counting famous points. All the tribulation here. Waterlines and undertows of falling tears you never see. They're innocent but acetone. They're tied to how you treat my bones like worms that lose a chunk of self and somehow still survive. I see writing as a slush pile of melted ghosts that turn to mulch for growth. Even the most hideous admission of truth can drive one upward. Hence, the term transcendence. Much of my social consciousness poetry began with an unguarded glance at the bathroom mirror. A good deal of my early work deals with the amputation of my right leg, a hideous string of surgeries, and the on-going process of accepting the concrete facts of my disability. By naming and expressing my losses and my frailties, by calling a stump a "crooked carrot" or a "bleeding beet," by saying the unsayables, I have given my sadness a voice and very slowly begun to embrace the good that comes of tragedy, which is simply the presence of raw strength coupled with a lesson in mortality.
Journal writing is an age-old tactic in the battle of wellness. At a recent conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, I sat on a publishing panel with bestselling author Bonnie Sherr Klein, who spoke about her recovery from two very serious strokes. In
Inaccessible pain is the real killer, a kind of second-hand smoke that hovers over daily life. The page, to me, is a surgical mask; it provides the safety of distance as well as a grounding point for seizures of grief. Alice Walker once wrote: "Writing saved me from the sin and inconvenience of violence." If we apply her sense of purpose and process, we discover that anger and sadness can be stepping stones. The trouble here is risk.

Poetry Unpredictable. Patterns seem what they are not. Hiding in the dark corners, they wear their clown suits. How can we predict the outcome? Nothing is certain. It is like putting together a puzzle that is missing every other piece. Once you finally get it put together, you realize all the pieces are the same color with no pattern at all. Poetry by Janet Buck.
Photo by Monika Gohl. A Rose to Press
Illness smells out the trite like beagles
with noses near to the ground
like a mother who knows
her daughter's been smoking
in the bathroom downstairs
a dozen walls away from her.
Suddenly this narrowing
of breakdown lanes, of space to roam,
sidewalks cracking from the ice.
Slippery sunsets, stretching winters, each hour of spring fresh popcorn to a starving duck. Truth becomes too short to hold like mustache trimmings in the sink, like bones that go brittle and snap, like hay that meets immutable rain. Don't we wish it didn't take a teapot growing cold and chipped to make us want the chamomile. The poem is a rose to press; the rose is a poem to read this might be it for both the garden and the light. Next Page> Home Archives Guidelines
