The Poet's Cut
Leslie Laurence, Editor June Issue Featured Poet: Janet I. Buck
What advice would you give a person just starting to write poetry?
Every writer needs three basic tools: practice, stubbornness, and emotive distance. Writing has to become an integral part of each day. A good deal of my success hinges upon the fact that I write and complete one or more poems a day, whether I’m feeling particularly inspired or not. The sheer fact of “output” has taught me that the writing well is never dry. It may not sparkle on demand, but the liquid is there. It becomes a matter of recognizing that you have a voice and then listening to it speak. A writer’s life is like an airport’s runway: the engine and the path have to be prepared when it’s time for take-off. Creativity turns up in odd places, descends in irregular patterns, and is nearly always a product of our openness to the cause. I treat the submission process with the same ritual of repetition as I do the writing process. Do you compose your work at the computer? If not, where?

Cancer's war you fought and lost.
Father threw away your clothes.
They must have bled on everything.
Moth balls brought to life
by wings of tattered memory.
When I corner him, go digging
for your buried soul, he acts like lampshades tilted in relentless wind. Perky bulb just blinks, goes black. A turtle's neck retreating into hollow shell. I fabricate identity and make you up like bed-time stories for my dolls. In my head, I study graves. Think of yours as vacant lots with pretty houses on their bibs. Cabin pressure choking why's? Calisthenics of a dream. You're so untarnished in my mind. No leading ladies of regret. Bridge across all troubled streams. If you were here to brush my hair

"The Zeinhom Morgue" "The Theory of Green" ... "The Orphan" Janet's other Identity Theory work: A Literary Call to Arms Two-time Pushcart nominee and winner of the H.G. Wells Award for Literary Excellence, Janet I. Buck has been featured in hundreds of print and internet journals world-wide. While a good deal of her work revolves around coping with a disability, she has also been recognized for her gun-blast of honesty regarding the roles of men and women, alcoholism, illness, family strife, and grief. As Janet says, "I was born into a heritage of silence in regard to my difference. All of my work, in some loose way, is tied to breaking that spell. I am a teacher (in a professional capacity), a student of crisis by virtue of fate, and a writer because words ring doorbells in my heart, and I must answer or die." Her career has been marked by an unmistakable string of good fortune. The first poem she submitted four years ago, called "The Nursing Home," won a national poetry prize and her second and third attempts were accepted for an anthology published by Outrider Press. She has, she says, "the advantage of difference." Few writers have had the courage and werewithal to tackle such topics as addiction and physical deformity. Her reputation for taking the baser elements of human behavior and happenstance have made an indelible impression on editors around the globe. She has the audacity to call a stump the "purple eggplant of despair" or trace the creaks of "trouble's soggy carrot bones." Readers are jarred by examples of honesty.

Four Poems
, by Janet Buck. The Cleft Lip. A doctor's loafers click the hall,
emphatic taps to balance out
drawing moans behind each door.
A nurse wipes oatmeal from your chin;
you blink once to say hello; then
the sockets clank tin lids like slot machines,
predictable with slipping luck.
I can't help drooling useless tears,
worrying if one goodnight will lead to shovels poised in dirt. Can't help thinking of your skin like chipped enamel on a kettle steaming loud and willingly toward some horizon I can't swallow casually. Our memories are sparrow tracks the slightest thaw might soon erase. "Come sit with me" is all you say — as if you are closing a book. A simple request from a soul, ready as ten-minute eggs, to a witness scorched by handles of time. Cat-eye weepy in the chair

"Every book begins with Page ONE" The Write Way Janet Buck, Ph.D
Deciding on a Flag to Raise
    by Janet Buck

Editorial receptions of what is now known as "9/11 Poetry" have traveled the teeter-totter of embracement and disgust. Some publishers consider ink to be a feeble retort to magnanimous grief; others consider a quill the only temperate feather we own in processing such a universal tragedy. As a writer, I hesitated to take a stand, fearing my stanzas would be labeled a travesty in the context of such sadness, a tacky and opportunistic ploy for the attention of readers. It didn't take me long to shed that cloak of fear when my sense of urgency emerged. I was not writing to build up the biceps of imperialism; I was writing to survive and learn. It was the only oar I owned that could cope with the size of these waves.
Much of my 9/11 poetry began as the "stung cheek" of grief, an urn in which to bury the ashes of our dead. It is now our duty to rebuild the dream without forgetting the lingering sadness on city streets, a signal that our spirit has been burned and there are lessons, formidable ones, in the context of this ash.

Parting Drapes
How did you survive the frost
knowing the book would close,
music would stop, a pulse would quit,
and you would be left in a room
surrounded by empty chairs?
Six long months with death for drapes
your hands were always drawing them. Back and forth, the steel screeched as if it were an oil rig plumbing a desert for hope. You messed with even valances, tugging at puffs as if this skirt could ever hang over the going bone. Inviting in the hiding sun, blue batiks of fading skies becomes commitment's old career. You sign forever in the sand; someone kicks it in your eyes. All palms are idle in the end, tortilla husks that speak of curdled, passing meals. Little scraps of ivory moons bequeathed to soil, then covered up. Rage drops anchors in the mud and dying sails the fitful sea, testing every rope we own. You kept his college photograph in every room you wandered through touched the glass as if to print it with a wish.

POETRY ISSN 1543-6063 VOLUME 14 2003 Creases in Fruit
by Janet Buck "From your phone, I can very well hear:
Herds of longing galloping away to the mountains."

-Elisha Porat
When I write about what we know,
it always concerns two doddering hags
feeling their scared way down a long wall
of loosened stone inch by sacred inch.
A taffy pull of will and pain
defines each measured step.
I guess we've always talked this way in a fever only the dying would trace. The only yacht we've ever sailed is on a page of someone else's paperback. Walking the loss was our bridge. Some years we drank ourselves to sleep when darkness drove us there and left. Our faces of creased fruit, close to the leathery rind, a canvas tired
