Source: Wikipedia The Right Honourable John Buchan , 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, GCMG, GCVO, CH, PC (26 August 1875 – 11 February 1940), was a Scottish novelist and politician who also served as Governor General of Canada.
Early life
Born in Perth, Scotland, he was educated at Glasgow University and Brasenose College, Oxford, winning the Newdigate prize for poetry while a student at the latter. He had a genius for friendship which he retained all his life. His friends at Oxford included Hilaire Belloc, Raymond Asquith and Aubrey Herbert. Buchan at first entered into a career in law in 1901, but almost immediately moved into politics, becoming private secretary to British colonial administrator Alfred Milner, who was high commissioner for South Africa, Governor of Cape Colony and colonial administrator of Transvaal and the Orange Free State—hence Buchan gained an acquaintance with the country that was to feature prominently in his writing. Buchan married Susan Charlotte Grosvenor, cousin of the Duke of Westminster, on July 15, 1907. Together they had four children, two of whom would spend most of their lives in Canada.

Updated - Sunday, 2 September, 2001 John Buchan (1875-1940), statesman, publisher, journalist, biographer, poet and novelist, was born on 26 August 1875 in Perth, Scotland. Educated at Hutcheson's Grammar School and Glasgow University, Buchan had already begun his extensive publishing career by the time he won a scholarship to Brasenose College, Oxford, where he won the Newdigate Prize for poetry in 1898. During his time at Oxford Buchan, a workaholic, published five books and numerous articles, partly to raise funds in order to continue his studies. Despite his training as a lawyer (a profession he would later assign to the fictional character he created most in his own mould, Sir Edward Leithen), Buchan travelled to South Africa in 1901 to become Lord Milner’s private secretary (the High Commissioner) in the immediate aftermath of the Boer War. Sir Quixote of the Moors , was published in 1895. Whilst recovering from illness in the early part of 1914 Buchan wrote his most famous work, The Thirty-Nine Steps , which was serialised in Blackwood’s Magazine from July of that year. With its plot of German espionage it was highly topical and was an instant hit; never out of print it remains popular today, and has twice been produced for the cinema, including the 1935 Hitchcock version (whose plot revisions Buchan considered an improvement on his book).

The Book Den
Comments on literature from Denny Hartford, Director of Vital Signs Ministries and producer of the daily radio commentary, "Vital Signs." Whether the talk stems from Denny's personal reading, Vital Signs' popular Book It! program, or the classic novels that make up the rota for the Notting Hill Napoleons Literary Society, we hope earnest readers will find The Book Den a place of interest and stimulation.

John Buchan (and the Napoloeons) Recommened Witch Wood
John Buchan, the remarkable novelist, historian and politician, considered Witch Wood his very best novel. And even for one like myself who loves his other work (Buchan wrote some 30 novels and much more than that of history, travel, politics and economics), I'm inclined to accept his conclusion. It is a superb read.
17th Century , a time when the country was in the midst of religious conflicts conflicts which went beyond theology to severe clashes of arms. But the intense action described in Witch Wood
The novel was definitely a hit with the Notting Hill Napoleons who undertook to discuss it at our last gathering. Many of them found its similarity to Sir Walter Scott attractive with the setting, the careful detail to history, the complex relationships, and even the occasional difficulty with dialect. Most of all, we agreed that, like Scott has on so many occasions, Buchan had provided us with a rich reading experience, one that brought inspiration and instruction along with the entertainment. And, of course, the discussion of such books always makes for a wonderful evening.
