Born: August 26, 1875, Perth, Scotland
Died: February 11, 1940
When Lord Tweedsmuir became Governor General, Canada was graced with a very literary vice-regal couple. Lord Tweedsmuir was a prolific author, writing two or three books a year – his suspense novel Thirty-Nine Steps later became famous when Alfred Hitchcock made it into a movie. Lady Tweedsmuir wrote many books and plays under the name of Susan Buchan. During his time as Governor General, Lord Tweedsmuir continued to write and his book Augustus , and his autobiography, Memory Hold-the-Door , were penned at Rideau Hall. While he pursued his own writing career, he also promoted the development of a distinctly Canadian culture. In 1936, encouraged by Lady Tweedsmuir, he created the Governor General's Literary Awards, which continue to be Canada's most prestigious recognition of literary merit. Lady Tweedsmuir was active in promoting literacy in Canada. She used Rideau Hall as a distribution centre for 40,000 books, which were sent out to readers in remote areas of the west. Her program was known as the "Lady Tweedsmuir Prairie Library Scheme". Together, Lord and Lady Tweedsmuir established the first proper library at Rideau Hall.

Main
born Aug. 26, 1875, Perth, Perthshire, Scot. died Feb. 11, 1940, Montreal statesman and writer best known for his swift-paced adventure stories. His 50 books, all written in his spare time while pursuing an active career in politics, diplomacy, and publishing, include many historical novels and biographies. Prester John (1910); it is a vivid, prophetic account of an African rising. During World War I Buchan held a staff appointment, and in 1917 he became director of information for the British government. His Thirty-Nine Steps (1915) was the most popular of his series of secret-service thrillers and the first of many to feature Richard Hannay. The 1935 film of The Thirty-Nine Steps, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, is often acclaimed a classic motion-picture thriller. Montrose (1928) and Sir Walter Scott (1932), are illuminated by compassionate understanding of Scottish history and literature. In 1935 he was raised to the peerage and appointed governor-general of Canada, which was the setting for his novel

I returned from the City about three o'clock on that May afternoon pretty well disgusted with life. I had been three months in the Old Country, and was fed up with it. If anyone had told me a year ago that I would have been feeling like that I should have laughed at him; but there was the fact.
Greenmantle

I had just finished breakfast and was filling my pipe when I got Bullivant's telegram. It was at Furling, the big country house in Hampshire where I had come to convalesce after Loos, and Sandy, who was in the same case, was hunting for the marmalade. I flung him the flimsy with the blue strip pasted down on it, and he whistled.
Mr Standfast
I spent one-third of my journey looking out of the window of a first-class carriage, the next in a local motor-car following the course of a trout stream in a shallow valley, and the last tramping over a ridge of downland through great beech-woods to my quarters for the night. In the first part I was in an infamous temper; in the second I was worried and mystified; but the cool twilight of the third stage calmed and heartened me The Moon Endureth ...I came down from the mountain and into the pleasing valley of the Adige in as pelting a heat as ever mortal suffered under. The way underfoot was parched and white; I had newly come out of a wilderness of white limestone crags, and a sun of Italy blazed blindingly in an azure Italian sky.

John Buchan, the presbyterian cavalier
Contemporary Review Feb, 1993 by R.D. Kernohan IT isn't unusual for successful thriller-writers to take their most popular books less seriously than readers do. The writers may have been intensely committed to causes their best-known books hardly hint at, and proudest of other books that were not to outlive them. Rider Haggard was knighted for services to agriculture, not for King Solomon's Mines. His extra-curricular enthusiasms included support for the authenticity of the Jerusalem site known as 'Gordon's Calvary'. Conan Doyle, though foiled in his bid to kill off Sherlock Holmes, became an historian of the Boer War and devotee of spiritualism and psychic research. John Buchan spent more time on serious biographies and histories than on the thrillers that remain in print, more than 50 years after his death while serving as Governor-General of Canada. He had also been a Tory member of parliament before becoming Lord Tweedsmuir and was a notable lay theologian.

Sphere.Inline.search('sphereSideBar','http://time.com/') tiiQuigoWriteAd(755769, 1290761, 180, 200, -1); The author of Greenmantle, Midwinter, The Three Hostages (one of the finest romances of modern times) was in Manhattan the other day for a few hours. Lieutenant Colonel John Buchan is a short, quiet-spoken, modest English author. In those characteristics, he is like Walter de la Mare and W. Somerset Maugham, our other English visitors of the moment. They arrived without blaring of trumpets—and both Buchan and Maugham departed quietly, after seeing a few things at the theatre and saying "how-do-you-do-goodbye" to a few friends. When I met John Buchan the other day, I said to him: "How I should like to find time to read your History of the Great War." His reply was: "Well, there are a million words of it!" He is not only a writer of stirring romantic novels, but the best historian, so far, of the recent War. In fact, two talents—literary and historical —became evident early in his career; for he won prizes in both subjects while at Oxford, where he was educated after preliminaries at Glasgow University. A man of many interests, and one of action—thoroughly admirable. I like this recent statement of his ambitions: "I regard business as my profession, writing ,as my amusement; and it looks as if some kind of politics was going to be my duty. I have three ambitions in each sphere: To write a full Life of General Robert E. Lee; to make the best literature accessible to the poorest purse and in any language; and to do a little to help bring about the full understanding of America and the British Empire, which I regard as the biggest thing that can come out of the War and the main guarantor of the future."
