John Buchan (1875-1940) - First Baron Tweedsmuir of Enfield Scottish diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, poet, and novelist, whose most famous thriller was THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS (1915), his 27th book, which has been filmed three times. Alfred Hitchcock's film version of the story, made in 1935, is ranked as one of the director's best works. Buchan published nearly 30 novels and seven collections of short stories. "Public life is regarded as the crown of a career, and to young men it is the worthiest ambition. Politics is still the greatest and the most honorable adventure." After returning to London Buchan specialized in tax law and continued to write. In 1906 Buchan started to work for the publisher Thomas Nelson and Sons. He revitalized publication of pocket editions of great literature and virtually edited The Spectator . In 1907 he married Susan Charlotte Grosvenor; they had three sons and one daughter. During World War I Buchan was a war correspondent before joining the army. While ill in bed in 1914 during the first months of the war, he wrote The Thirty-Nine Steps . He served on the Headquarters Staff of the British Army in France as temporary Lieutenant Colonel (1916-17). When Lloyd George was appointed Prime Minister, Buchan was made Director of Information (1917-18) and then for a short time Director of Intelligence, a brief interlude in Buchan's career of which he did not much talk. After the war Buchan became a director of the news agency Reuters.

    John Buchan: "Lad O' Pairts"
The "lad o' pairts", was an ideal encouraged by the Scottish educational system of the nineteenth century: a boy should strive to be an all-rounder, a pioneer, broad in knowledge and at the same time practical. John Buchan was born in Perth, a Scottish lowland farming town, son of a minister of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. While his origins may have been considered lowly, Buchan’s ambition was strong and his imagination knew no bounds. He grew up in Border country; Peebles and Broughton on the River Tweed, Pathhead on the Firth of Forth, and he loved wandering; taking long hikes in the countryside of his boyhood. Later, the family moved to the working-class district of the Gorbals, in Glasgow. Adapting to such a change of environment must have required great adjustments, but the experience would have only strengthened Buchan’s resilience.

But while he also held a number of influential political posts such as Lord High Commissioner of the Church of Scotland (1933-34) and Governor General of Canada (1935-40), he is perhaps best remembered for his espionage fiction, the success of which overshadowed not only his other literary accomplishments but also the varied and prestigious work he work he carried out as a British public servant. The Writers John Buchan Biography As well as a writer John Buchan was a published historian, lawyer, editor, war correspondent, government administrator, MP and director of a successful publishing house. He was born, the first son to a Free-Church minister and his wife Helen Jane Masterson, in 1875. Raised in the village of Pathhead on the Fife coast, he attended school in nearby Kirkcaldy until 1888, when the family left Fife for Glasgow where his father took up a new ministry. Aged seventeen Buchan obtained a scholarship to study classics and mathematics at Glasgow University but he was a solitary youth and financial constraints prevented him from socialising widely. A second scholarship enabled Buchan to continue his studies at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he eventually graduated with a Doctor of Laws. During this time he wrote prodigiously and several of his stories and essays were published. During his writing career he is thought to have published some one hundred books, only forty or so of which are fiction. Buchan was a huge admirer of the writing of Sir Walter Scott, whose Romantic influence marks the adventure stories, ‘where the incidents defy the probabilities, and march just inside the borders of the possible,’ for which he was best known. However, he regarded writing as an inferior career and sought to make his name in the wider arena of British, imperial politics.
