Mother Tongue Mother Tongue Mother Tongue was written in the early 1990s, so whether the Chinese have found a way of taming their own language since then is unclear. There are also a good smattering of translatory gaffes - Kennedy’s "I am a donut" has become legend, but President Carter went one better by announcing during a Polish state visit that "I desire the Poles carnally" - and an entertaining chapter of the versatility of swearing in English. Mike Gerrard recalls an interview with travel writer Bill Bryson as his new book The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is published in the UK
Tell people you're a travel writer and there are certain things they say: how do you get a job like that? Can you pack me in your luggage? Fellow travel writers told me they often got asked if they'd ever met Bill Bryson , but no-one had ever asked me that. So I had to smile at the weekend when someone at a party asked me: have you met Bill Bryson? Mind you, it's hard to avoid Bill Bryson in the UK lately, with his new book out. He's been in the papers, on TV, reading extracts on the radio. And the book, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid about his childhood in Des Moines, Iowa, is wonderful.

Born in 1951 in the middle of the United States Des Moines, Iowa Bryson is perfectly positioned to mine his memories of a totally all-American childhood for twenty-four carat memoir gold.
Like millions of his generation, Bill Bryson grew up with a rich fantasy life as a superhero: in his case, he ran around the house wearing a jersey with a thunderbolt on it, and a towel round his neck that served as his cape, leaping tall buildings in a single bound and vanquishing evildoers (in his head) as The Thunderbolt Kid.
Using his old fantasy life as a springboard, Bill Bryson recreates the life of his family in the 1950s in all its transcendent normality. Warm and laugh-out-loud funny, The Thunderbolt Kid is full of Bill Bryson's inimitable, pitch-perfect observations. Complete and unabridged.

Bill Bryson
William 'Bill' McGuire Bryson (born December 8, 1951) is a best-selling American author of humorous books on travel, as well as books on the English language and on scientific subjects. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, he was educated at Drake University but dropped out in 1972 after deciding to backpack around Europe for four months. He returned to Europe the following year with his high-school friend, Stephen Katz (which, it transpires, is not his real name). Some of his experiences from this trip are re-lived as flashbacks in Neither Here Nor There , which documents a similar journey Bryson made twenty years later.

Was author Bill Bryson a draft dodger or draft evader during the Viet Nam war?
    Answer
Hard to tell. According to Bryson's rather sketchy biography, he left the U.S. in 1972 when he was about 21 years old and remained out of the country for the next 20 years. He was clearly a prime draft prospect for the Viet Nam war in 1972, but that doesn't prove anything. So...while the circumstances are rather suspicious, who knows?

Bill Bryson moved to a small town in New Hampshire after living abroad for twenty years. He and his college roommate, Stephen Katz, decide to rediscover America by walking the Appalachian Trail (hence the title). Neither Bill Bryson nor Stephen Katz is in any shape to even consider such an undertaking, but consider it they do. A Walk in the Woods is the story of their hilarious adventures and encounters when they attempt to walk the entire length of the Appalachian Train from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Bill Bryson's, A Walk in the Woods is the perfect book to read or listen to whether you enjoy a leisurely stroll through your neighborhood or are preparing to follow in these two intrepid souls footsteps on the AT (as the Appalachian Trail is known).

Will Bill Bryson tackle the Arab world next?
Travel humorist Bill Bryson has written about America, Europe, Australia and Africa, but now it looks like he has sights set on the Arab world. Maybe. It's actually hard to tell when you read the Guardian article that broke this news. The title of the article, after all, is "Bryson books a wry look at the Arabs" but in the same article, Bryson suggests he might go to Canada instead. "It is much, much easier for me to make fun of people in wealthy countries like Canada," he says. "I have a problem writing my kind of book about Third World countries." Personally, I hope Bryson gives Canada a miss and heads for Arab lands, since the travel-lit world could use another lighthearted look at the Middle East (the best such book in the last couple decades Tony Horwitz's Baghdad Without a Map , is over a dozen years old now). Ken He was talking about writing a Canada book a few weeks back when I saw him here in SF, actually. But as he pointed out, "Even Canadians don't read books about Canada." Just being silly, obviously. I'd love to read a Bryson book about Canada.

Renewing my Visa with Bill Bryson April 24th, 2007 JST (9 months ago) I renewed my visa today, so I'm allowed to live in Japan for another three years. I'd applied for the renewal a riveting, entertaining, though-provoking, witty, wonderful book that's a joy to read Anyway, the particular book I had today is The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir , which I recently received from my folks for my birthday. Here's a taste... the first four paragraphs of the book: In the late 1950s, the Royal Canadian Air Force produced a booklet on isometrics, a form of exercise that enjoyed a short but devoted vogue with my father. The idea of isometrics was that you used any unyielding object, like a tree or a wall, and pressed against it with all your might from various positions to tone and strengthen different groups of muscles. Since everybody already has access to trees and walls, you didn't need to invest in a lot of costly equipment, which I expect was what attracted my dad. What made it unfortunate in my father's case is that he would do his isometrics on airplanes. At some point in every flight, he would stroll back to the galley area or the space by the emergency exit and, taking up the posture of someone trying to budge a very heavy piece of machinery, he would begin to push with his back or shoulder against the outer wall of the plane, pausing occasionally to take deep breaths before returning with quiet grunts to the task.
