I could ask for no greater honour. I hope it goes without saying that I will do my utmost to serve the University with credit. Bill Bryson, on his installation as Chancellor The US-born journalist and author, who has lived most of his adult life in England, is best known for his series of books observing life in North America, Britain, Europe and Australia. He sang the praises of the city of Durham in his account of touring around Britain, Notes from a Small Island (1995). He has written about the English language and about poverty in Africa, and won the 2004 Royal Society Aventis Prize for science writing with his encyclopaedic work A Short History of Nearly Everything . In 2004 he returned to Durham to receive an honorary Doctor of Civil Law. In 2006, Bill Bryson was awarded an honorary Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, for his contribution to literature.

Bill Bryson Takes on Rubbish
by Kelly Amabile Jun 27th 2007 @ 6:32AM
The Times Online published a lengthy piece about Bill Bryson's crusade against fly-tipping (what the Brits call littering) now that he is officially the new president of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). The longtime UK resident has decided to do his part to raise awareness about rubbish issues in his adopted homeland, although he didn't exactly set out to take on this position.
Bryson's still under contract to write two more travel books, but that won't stop him from rising to the challenge that seemed unavoidable after he asked his readers to email him if they were concerned about litter. He got about 1,000 responses and made a conscious decision to get involved with CPRE as a result. Does this mean future travel writing from Mr. Bryson will be green and litter-free? We shall have to wait and see...
As he explains in the interview: "I'm not doing this because I'm American and think I can tell you how to run your country," he says. "I'm doing this because I'm a long-term resident and I've seen all this happening over a very long time. I would rather not be doing this at all; I'd much rather be at home gardening."

Bill Bryson forever: infinite thoughts
Theoretical linguists say sentences are of finite length. Traditional grammars say that sentences express complete thoughts. The two are not compatible, as a nice example found in the travel writings of Bill Bryson shows. Theoretical linguists generally assume sentences in natural languages must be of finite length because a sentence that went on forever could never be understood or composed or mentally represented by any finite being even in principle, and it could never be generated by any finite sequence of derivational steps in a generative grammar of the sort Chomsky pioneered. Traditional grammars generally say that a sentence is the linguistic expression of a complete thought. If it doesn't express a complete thought, then it's elliptical. A sentence like "I was going to clean the rug but I decided not to" is elliptical for "I was going to clean the rug but I decided not to clean the rug", and so on. But consider this sentence, from page 16 of Bill Bryson's book

The Woodland Trust supporter backs planting of hedges and trees by schoolchildren Schoolchildren across the UK will this week join forces with the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, to plant a native hedgerow or copse in their school grounds. The free packs of thirty native trees, which schools signed up as part of the Tree For All campaign, have been given the thumbs up by international author Bill Bryson. (For a list of schools taking part, please see Notes to Editors). Bill, a keen supporter of the Woodland Trust, says the children’s work is hugely important: “Thousands of miles of hedgerows disappeared during the last century, in the wake of agricultural development which is a crime against the countryside. The Woodland Trust’s hedge and copse initiative goes some small way to address the balance by planting new hedgerows. Planting them with help from the next generation is an effective way to get the message across that we need to conserve the hedgerows we have left and to replace the ones we have thoughtlessly and needlessly ripped out.” The planting of hedges and copses will attract wildlife and give schools ‘living classrooms’ which pupils can enjoy for years to come. Each hedge and hazel copse pack has instructions on how to plant the saplings and worksheets about the various species. Planting and using a hedge or hazel copse can contribute to Key Stage 2 in science, numeracy, literacy and art and design.

Sunday, August 14, 2005; Page P04 Uncommonly perceptive, wickedly funny, cynical about all the right things Bill Bryson should be declared a national treasure, but which nation? The author of "A Walk in the Woods," "In a Sunburned Country" and other best-selling travel tales grew up in Iowa, married a Brit and alternates living in both countries (he's now based in England). K.C. Summers talked to Bryson when he came to Washington last month to speak at a Smithsonian program on Wales. Q Why Wales? Are you doing a book?
(Above Photo By Jerry Bauer; P1 Photo By Dayna Smith The Washington Post) ANo. But I love Wales. . . . It's preserved an awful lot of the feeling of Britain as it was when I first went there 30 years ago. A lot of the landscape looks the way the British landscape ought to look, in my view, and increasingly is not looking.

MORE ON MONDAY: Shakespeare by Bill Bryson
I must admit I probably wouldn't have bothered reading yet another book about Shakespeare if it hadn't been written by Bill Bryson. Actually, I definitely wouldn't - I had quite enough Shakespeare at university (although I'd still love to see a really great production of my favourite play, Macbeth). But this biography - part of the Eminent Lives series - is written by Bill Bryson and so that made it a must-read. As with all Shakespeare biographies, Bryson looks at the Bard's early life, the "missing years" when he began writing the greatest plays in history, his family life, and his death. Of course, this all has to be put into context so Bryson also takes us on a journey to London and Stratford in the late 16th and early 17th centuries (which I never tire of reading about, since it all sounds so disgusting), the theatre scene and the monarchy.
