, Powells.com Everything, it seems, is interesting to Bill Bryson . The marvel is that he can make it all interesting to us - three billion year old fossilized organisms off the western coast; a giant lobster on the side of a highway; empty, forbidding spaces... "It's just like when you hear a great story in a bar," he explained, "an anecdote that you want to rush right home and relate to other people. You want to spread the word." Eighty percent of Australia's plants and animals exist nowhere else in the world. A 19th century naturalist caught two rare pig-footed bandicoots - in time, he grew hungry and ate them, and no one has seen a pig-footed bandicoot since. Among the first round of convicts Great Britain exiled to Australia was a man who had been jailed for stealing twelve cucumber plants.

        • Opening line. When you come from Des Moines you either accept the fact without question and settle down with a girl called Bobbie and get a job in the Firestone factory and live there forever and ever or you spend your adolescence moaning at length about what a dump it is and how you can't wait to get out and then you settle down with a local girl named Bobbie and get a job in the Firestone factory and live there forever and ever. My father liked Iowa. He lived his whole life in the state, and is even now working his way through eternity there, in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. I had to calm down because a state trooper pulled up alongside me at a traffic light and began looking at me with that sort of casual disdain you often get when you give a dangerously stupid person a gun and a squad car.

Bill Bryson. Mother Tongue: the English language . Penguin. 1990
    Review:
I was slightly put off this gentle rambling about the English language when, on page four, Bryson repeated the old Urban Legend the Eskimos, as is well known, have fifty words for types of snow . Then he later refers to Tolkien as the author of the Hobbit trilogy ; possibly technically correct, but a rather bizarre choice of description. But there is some good entertaining stuff here. The best part of the book is the middle section, where Bryson covers the history of the English language, enlivened with good examples. We learn about the origins of English pronunciation and spelling vagaries, illustrated with phrases like 'a cat with nine lives lives next door' (he also notes the contrasting pronunciations of mouth as a noun and mouth as a verb), and factoids like conflicting regional usages have left us with two forms of the word, such as

Buy it on Amazon Read January Magazine 's 1997 interview with Bill Bryson "I don't read a lot of travel literature. I kind of like to get away from it. It's kind of like, you know, being a brain surgeon and having to read neurological magazines or something. For pleasure I wouldn't necessarily read travel stuff. But when I do read it, almost every writer even the guys I don't particularly like there's always a lot of stuff to admire. Because, you know, you've tried to do the same sort of thing at some point. Describe a sunset or the mountains. So when you see somebody else who's done it really well, you think: I know that that wasn't easy." The first thing to realize about Bill Bryson is that he fits everywhere. And nowhere. Which is perhaps the very thing that has given him the ability to share places with all of us so vividly. Born and raised in the United States, Bryson moved to the United Kingdom when he was a young man and started his career as a journalist and travel writer there. In fact, Bryson was a well-loved and wildly selling British author before his books even raised an eyebrow "at home." At the time, home was in the UK and his wife and four children are all British subjects. In fact, it wasn't until 1996 that Bryson moved his family back to the United States where they now make their home. A passel of little Brysons with British vocal inflections and half American hearts. Well, maybe. Bryson is mild of voice and manner. Gentle. Even charming in a sweet and innocent sort of way. He speaks rapidly, yet succinctly, articulating his thoughts in person and on paper in a no-nonsense manner that, nonetheless, always leaves room for fun. Not for Bryson the heavy prose of a Paul Theroux or Bruce Chatwin (Brits both). Nor, also, the youthful exuberance of a

PM in conversation with Bill Bryson
30 November 2006 Tony Blair and Bill Bryson got together for a chat about two subjects they both care passionately for - science and education. In a special podcast recording for the Downing Street website, the PM and the best-selling author enjoy tea and conversation. Bill, whose popular-science book A Short History of Everything was a huge hit and issued to every school in the country, admits he was "dead bored" by science when he was a child. Mr Blair concurs, saying that science was like a foreign language to him because he couldn't get to grips with the basic concepts. But they both agree the teaching of science is vital to the UK's economic future. The twenty-minute meeting of minds moves on to subjects such as immigration and their mutual love for the north east of England. Bill also tells the PM how honoured he is, as an American, to have been made Chancellor of Durham University, where Mr Blair's father was once a lecturer.
