William Cullen Bryant
A Biography
Mr. Bryant was born in Cummington, Massachusetts, on the third day of November, 1794. At a very early age he gave indications of superior genius, and his father, an eminent physician, distinguished for erudition and taste as well as for extensive and thorough knowledge of science, watched with deep interest the development of his faculties under the most careful and judicious instruction. At ten years of age he made very credible translations from some of the Latin poets, which were printed in a newspaper at Northhampton and during the vehement controversies between Federalists and Democrats, which marked the period of Jefferson's administration, he wrote, "The Embargo," a political satire, which was printed in Boston in 1809. . . . The satire was directed against President Jefferson and his party. . . . Some of the democrats affected to believe that Master Bryant was older than was confessed, or that another person had written, "The Embargo;" but the book was eagerly read, and in a few months a second edition appeared, with some additional pieces. . . . In the sixteenth year of his age, Bryant entered an advanced class of Williams College, in which he soon became distinguished for his attainments generally, and especially for his proficiency in classical learning. In 1812 he obtained from the faculty an honourable discharge, for the purpose of entering upon the study of the law, and in 1815 he was admitted to the bar, and commended the practice of his profession in the village of Great Barrington, where he was soon after married.

Executive summary: Editor, The New York Evening Post The Embargo, or Sketches of the Times; A Satire by a Youth of thirteen , had been printed at Boston in 1808. At the age of twenty-six Bryant married, at Great Barrington, Frances Fairchild, with whom he enjoyed a happy union until her death nearly half a century later. In the year of his marriage he suffered the bereavement of his father's death. In 1825 he ventured to lay aside the practice of law, and removed to New York City to assume a literary editorship. Here for some months his fortunes were precarious, until in the next year he became one of the editors of the New York Evening Post . In the third year following, 1829, he came into undivided editorial control, and became also chief owner. He enjoyed his occupation, fulfilling its duties with an unflagging devotion to every worthy public interest until he died in 1878, in the month of his choice, as indicated in his beautiful poem entitled "June."

68. On The Life Of Thomas Cole - William Cullen Bryant
The above text was taken from Orations And Addresses by william cullen bryant , published 1873 by G.P. Putnam s Sons, New York

On the life of Thomas Cole
A funeral oration delivered before the National Academy of Design, New York, May 4, 1848 By William Cullen Bryant GENTLEMEN OF THE ACADEMY: Kindred Spirits by Asher B. Durand
Let me ask those who hear me to accompany me in a brief review of his life and his principal works. Thomas Cole was born in the year 1802, at Bolton, in Lancashire, England. He came to this country with his family when sixteen years of age. He regarded himself, however , as an American, and claimed the United States as the country of his relatives. His father passed his youth here, and his grandfather, I have heard him say, lived the greater part of his life in the United States. Two of the pictures of which I am speaking are in the exhibition opened for the benefit of his family since his death. They are not equal to his later works, but they arc skilful, faithful and original, and these qualities, once pointed out, made them the subject of general admiration. in one of the earlier editions of his poem entitled The Vanity of Human Wishes, Johnson thus enumerates the calamities incident to the life of a scholar :
Toil, envy, want, the garret and the jail.

T HOU blossom bright with autumn dew, And coloured with the heaven's own blue, That openest when the quiet light Succeeds the keen and frosty night. Thou comest not when violets lean O'er wandering brooks and springs unseen, Or columbines, in purple dressed, Nod o'er the ground-bird's hidden nest. Thou waitest late and com'st alone, When woods are bare and birds are flown, And frosts and shortening days portend The aged year is near his end. Then doth thy sweet and quiet eye Look through its fringes to the sky, A flower from its cerulean wall. I would that thus, when I shall see The hour of death draw near to me, Hope, blossoming within my heart

Cedarmere Home of William Cullen Bryant
Historic Postcards of Cedarmere Cedarmere, located on Bryant Avenue in Roslyn Harbor, was the rural Long Island home of the prominent nineteenth-century American poet, civic leader and newspaper editor William Cullen Bryant, from 1843 until his death in 1878. Bryant purchased the house as a retreat from the pressures and congestion of New York City, where he could work on his poetry and indulge his love of nature.
The oldest section of the house was constructed in 1787 by William Kirk, a Quaker farmer. Bryant greatly enlarged the original farmhouse, renovating it several times during his ownership. In addition, he planted numerous exotic trees and flowers on the grounds, transforming the estate into a horticultural showplace. Following William Cullen Bryant's death in 1878, Cedarmere passed in turn to his daughter Julia and his grandson Harold Godwin. Mr. Godwin added such features as the stone bridge and Sunken Garden to the landscape, and rebuilt the house following a major fire in 1902. The seven acre estate was left to Nassau County by Harold Godwin's daughter Elizabeth to preserve as a memorial to William Cullen Bryant.
Visitors to Cedamere are encouraged to view the exhibits in the house.

William Cullen Bryant, most noted for his poem “Thanatopsis,” a study of death, also wrote numerous sonnets on nature. Born in Cummington, Massachusetts, November 3, 1794, Bryant was an early nature lover and much of his poetry focuses on nature subjects.
Despite the fact that he lived a long life, dying in New York in 1878, his health was weak in infancy. One story has it that as a baby Bryant had a large head; his father who was a physician sought to reduce the size of his son’s head by dunking him in cold water every morning. It is not known if these cold baths actually brought about the desired result.
Bryant entered Williams College at age sixteen and studied there for two years. Later he studied law and became a member of the bar in 1815. He practiced law at Plainfield and at Great Barrington. Despite his high achievement in the courts, his real love was literature, not law.
Bryant’s literary career had begun in his teens. He wrote and published a satirical poem titled “The Embargo” and several other poems when he was only thirteen. He wrote his most widely read poem, “Thanatopsis,” when he was only eighteen.
